Zen Media develops three-part Google Preferred Sources framework for answer engine optimization (AEO). September 18, 2026 07:00 ET | Source: Zen Media * Zen Media developed a three-part approach to Google Preferred Sources: domain eligibility, consistent publishing and citable content that can surface in relevant search and AI results. * Zen Media implemented Google's Preferred Sources button on zenmedia.com and optimum7.com as part of its broader answer engine optimization strategy. * Google does not publish a complete set of criteria for Preferred Sources or offer an application process, so site owners should review Google's guidance before implementing the feature. Miami, FL, Sept. 18, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Google released a new interactive Preferred Sources button for publishers on Aug. 20, giving websites a direct way to let readers add them as a preferred source and return to where they left off. Zen Media, an AI visibility agency, has implemented the button across its own properties and developed a framework for using the feature alongside answer engine optimization. The framework focuses on three actions: confirm domain eligibility, maintain consistent publishing and create citable content that answers the questions the audience asks. Google says that when a user selects a site as a preferred source, content from that site is more likely to appear in Top Stories for relevant searches. In AI Mode and AI Overviews, content from the selected source can also be highlighted with a preferred badge for that user. By Aug. 20, users had already selected more than 600,000 unique sources, Google reported. "Preferred Sources gives brands a new way to build a direct relationship with readers inside Google Search, including its AI experiences," said Sarah Evans, CEO of Zen Media. "But adding the button does not create visibility on its own. The brand still needs current, useful content that Google has a reason to surface when someone searches." Google Preferred Sources eligibility starts at the domain level Eligibility applies to domains and subdomains. A site such as example.com or news.example.com can appear, while example.com/blog cannot qualify separately from the root domain. A company that publishes at example.com/blog can be selected only as example.com, so the reader's preference applies at the domain level. Site architecture determines the selectable unit before content does. Google does not publish a complete explanation of how availability is determined and does not offer an application process. Its help documentation notes that sources that are not updated regularly may not be available. Consistent publishing gives a preferred source more opportunities to appear Selecting a preferred source does not guarantee that the site will appear for every search. Google says users will find selected sources more often in Top Stories when those sites publish fresh content relevant to the search. A reader selects a source once. A site that publishes consistently across the subjects its audience researches creates more opportunities for relevant content to surface in future searches. Preferred Sources does not replace the content required to earn visibility The button itself requires only a small implementation. Google's standard JavaScript version can be added with two lines of HTML. The more substantial work comes before the selection. A company still needs pages that clearly answer relevant questions, explain its expertise and products, and provide information that search and AI systems can understand and surface. Publishing consistently around the topics a brand wants to be known for helps keep that content current. Preferred Sources does not independently cause a company to be cited in an AI answer, and Google does not state that one user's selection changes which sources are cited for other users. The feature gives a reader a way to express a preference. "What interests us is not the two lines of code," Evans added. "It's what happens when a company that is already publishing strong, useful content gives its readers a way to explicitly say, 'I want to see more from this source.' Preferred Sources makes that possible directly inside Google's search experience." Frequently Asked Questions How do I know if my site is eligible for Google Preferred Sources? Search for the site in Google's source preferences tool. If the site appears there, readers can select it as a preferred source. If it does not appear, the site is not currently available for selection. Eligibility works at the domain and subdomain level. A root domain or subdomain can appear, but an individual folder or subdirectory cannot qualify on its own. Why doesn't my site show up in Google Preferred Sources? Google does not provide a specific explanation for why an individual domain is or is not included in Preferred Sources. Google has documented some basic parameters, including domain-level eligibility, and advises that sources that are not updated regularly may not be available. It does not currently provide a public application or appeal process for Preferred Sources. Does being selected as a preferred source affect AI Overviews? Yes, for the user who made the selection. Google says content from a selected preferred source can be highlighted with a preferred badge in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google does not state that one person's source preference changes which sources are selected or cited for other users. Does adding the Preferred Sources button get a brand cited by AI? No. Adding the button gives readers a way to select the website as a preferred source. It does not guarantee inclusion in an AI Overview or AI Mode answer. The underlying content still has to be relevant enough to surface for the user's query. Zen Media incorporates Preferred Sources into its broader answer engine optimization work. What should a company do before adding Google's Preferred Sources button? Zen Media recommends three steps: confirm domain eligibility for the root domain or subdomain, maintain consistent publishing and create citable content that answers the questions the audience asks. Zen Media has introduced tools that provide PR teams with citation-level data from generative AI platforms, addressing a longstanding measurement gap in the industry. The company's AVOS system tracks citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Grok and Claude. Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly 50% of US search queries and over 70% of informational queries as of March 2026, according to Google Search Central. Princeton GEO research shows that 93.67% of AI Overview citations include at least one top-10 organic result, whilst 94% of cited links are non-paid media. Zen Media's framework measures Answer Share, prompt coverage and recency-weighted citations alongside traditional PR metrics. The company's ZAVI Enterprise Intelligence maps target prompts to current AI answers, establishing baselines before content deployment.
Zen Media launches GEO GPT to track brand visibility in ai-generated answers. Zen Media has introduced GEO GPT(TM), a new analytics tool designed to help companies measure how often their brands appear in AI-generated responses across platforms such as ChatGPT and other generative search tools. As AI increasingly shapes how buyers research vendors and products, the tool aims to give marketers visibility into a channel that has traditionally been difficult to measure. GEO GPT evaluates real buyer-style prompts and analyzes whether a brand is mentioned when AI systems recommend vendors or solutions. It tracks several metrics including brand mention frequency, recommendation position within answers, and instances where competing brands replace or outrank a company in AI responses. The platform also now includes a new performance metric, which is referred to as "Answer Share(TM)." This metric essentially measures the percentage of AI prompts in which the brand is included. This allows marketers to better understand the value of the platform in terms of the brand's overall presence in the realm of AI. The platform essentially allows marketers to gain further insights into the way in which their brand is represented within the realm of AI, which is now more important than ever as the traditional SEO model continues to evolve into the realm of generative engine optimization. This essentially requires marketers to ensure that their brand is recognized and included within the realm of AI, which is now playing a more critical role in the way in which consumers make purchasing decisions.
