Zero Carbon Systems

Zero Carbon Systems

Direct air capture for CO2 removal

Overview

Zero Carbon Systems captures CO2 from the ambient air using direct air capture technology and scales the process for mass removal. Its systems run continuously and can operate entirely on renewable electricity, using very large, high-throughput units to lower costs. The company leverages core technology from Global Thermostat to enable megaton-scale removal and focuses on economics through continuous operation and high throughput. Its goal is to remove at least 0.5 gigatons of CO2 per year by 2050, backed by Zero Carbon Partners.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Global Thermostat’s 2024 acquisition added 30-plus scientists and engineers to Zero Carbon Systems.
  • DOE recognition in June 2024 kept the combined platform visible and fundable.
  • The company plans a 50,000-ton plant by 2028, creating a credible scale narrative.

What critics are saying

  • Global Thermostat failed for fifteen years to build a commercial DAC plant.
  • A 2,500-ton demo plant planned for 2025-2026 remains unbuilt, delaying validation.
  • If the demo slips again, Zero Carbon Systems becomes another stranded DAC-patent buyer.

What makes Zero Carbon Systems unique

  • Zero Carbon Systems combines stealth engineering since 2020 with Global Thermostat’s DAC patents.
  • The company targets megaton-scale DAC, not boutique offsets, with 2030 commercialization plans.
  • David Elenowitz pairs private-equity discipline with climate hardware execution, unusual among DAC founders.
