ZymoChem

Licensing microbial bioprocesses for sustainable chemicals

Overview

ZymoChem develops microbial bioprocesses that convert renewable sugars into chemicals used in everyday consumer products. It licenses engineered microbial strains and accompanying bioprocess technologies to chemical manufacturers, generating revenue from licensing fees, royalties, and partnerships. Clients apply these licensed microbes in their own plants or through contract manufacturers, fermenting sugars to produce target chemicals with scale-up support from ZymoChem. Its approach centers on a licensing-based model and renewable-feedstock chemistry to provide sustainable, scalable alternatives to petrochemical production for the consumer-chemical market.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • March 19, 2025 lululemon collaboration validates demand for bio-based nylon supply chains.
  • May 15, 2026 IHUT showed strong parent validation for BAYSE bio-SAP diapers.
  • August 26, 2024 DoD awarded $1.57M, with potential follow-on contract above $100M.

What critics are saying

  • BAYSE still depends on diaper adoption against entrenched Petro-SAP incumbents by 2027.
  • Commercial scale remains CMO-dependent; any process failure delays inventory and customer shipments.
  • The next financing round is existential if bio-based materials revenue lags scale-up costs.

What makes ZymoChem unique

  • BAYSE launched July 9, 2024 as 100% bio-based, biodegradable SAP for diapers.
  • February 2026 commercial-scale BAYSE ingredient production reached 45,000 liters with CMO partners.
  • January 21, 2026 Agile BioFoundry partnership advances bio-adipic acid for bio-nylon 6,6.
