Dillard's shares fall 6.6% as US retail sales drop 0.6% in July, largest decline in over a year

US retail sales fell 0.6% in July, the largest decrease in over a year, according to the Census Bureau. The decline contrasted sharply with economists' expectations of a small increase. Motor vehicle and parts dealers saw sales drop 1.8%, whilst non-store retailers declined 2.2%. The unexpected slump suggests persistent inflation may be causing consumers to tighten their budgets. Several retail stocks declined following the data. Department store Dillard's fell 6.6%, vehicle retailer Camping World dropped 2.7%, and boat retailer OneWater declined 3%. Dillard's shares have experienced 16 moves greater than 5% over the past year. The company recently reported second-quarter earnings of $6.25 per share, beating estimates but including a $1.82 per share one-time tariff refund boost.

Dillard's shares fall 4% as $1.51B revenue misses estimates despite $28.4M tariff rebate

Dillard's shares fell nearly 4% on Thursday after the retailer reported second-quarter results that missed revenue expectations. Net sales reached $1.51 billion, falling short of the $1.53 billion analyst forecast and declining marginally year-over-year. While net income surged 34% to $97.7 million, or $6.25 per share, beating estimates of $4.32, the figure included a $28.4 million post-tax payment from the federal government compensating for tariff-related losses. Excluding this one-time payment, profit would have been $69.3 million, below the prior year's $72.8 million. The company used the federal disbursement to strengthen its balance sheet, ending the quarter with over $1.2 billion in cash and retiring $96 million in debt.

Dillard's Q2 sales flat at $1.53B, but EPS beats estimates by 44.6% at $6.25

Dillard's met revenue expectations in Q2 2026, reporting sales of $1.53 billion, flat year on year. The department store chain's GAAP profit of $6.25 per share exceeded analyst estimates by 44.6%, aided by $37.2 million in tariff refunds. Operating margin improved to 11.6%, up from 6.1% in the prior-year quarter. Same-store sales rose 1% year on year. However, free cash flow declined to -$59.47 million from $60.09 million in the same period last year. The company ended the quarter with over $1.2 billion in cash and short-term investments after paying off $96 million in debt. Dillard's operates 272 locations, unchanged from the previous year. Analysts expect revenue to grow 1.6% over the next 12 months.
