Requirements
  • An Associate of Science degree, or equivalent experience, in optical or mechanical technologies.
  • Experience with production technologies, including evaluating and testing processes.

  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and accurately record process parameters.
  • Experience with databases, data manipulation, personal computers, and associated software.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and changing priorities.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse group of personalities and disciplines.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years of age.
  • Must meet pre-employment requirements, including any required physical examination, drug screen, and background investigation to satisfy Department of Energy clearance requirements.
  • Must be able to work in a low-level radiologically contaminated cleanroom environment and handle large, high-value optics and optical assemblies.
  • Must pass required on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.
  • May be required to work overtime, shifts, weekends, second shift, rotating days, or alternate schedules such as 4/10 or 12-hour shifts.
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matters; Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship, and holders of dual U.S. and foreign citizenship may be required to renounce non-U.S. citizenship before DOE L or Q clearance is processed or granted.
  • A job-related pre-placement medical examination may be required.
  • Selected external applicants must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
  • L- or Q-cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • The role may involve climbing ladders and stairs, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing or walking for significant periods.
Responsibilities
  • Assemble, disassemble, and test mechanical subassemblies, tooling, and fixtures using hand tools, power tools, and precision measurement devices such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Assist with equipment qualification, validation, and calibration activities as needed.
  • Handle large laser optics, up to 18 inches square and 50 pounds, using a mechanical lift or two-person lifting techniques.
  • Inspect large optics.
  • Mount optics into mechanical hardware frames.
  • Work in a Class 100 cleanroom.
  • Use web-based data management systems to track work, record metrology data, and report problems.
  • Follow written, operational, and safety procedures while completing job assignments.
  • Perform assignments in accordance with environmental, safety, health, and quality, security, and business-practice requirements and policies.
  • Ship and receive optics and other materials.
  • Perform duties under close supervision and report to an NIF manager while supporting projects within the Light Matter and Fusion directorate.
