Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- At least 1–2 years of experience in kitchen hood suppression system inspection, installation, or service is preferred but not required for entry-level candidates with training.
- Manufacturer certifications for kitchen suppression systems, such as Ansul, Kidde, Range Guard, or Pyro-Chem, are highly preferred.
- A state or local fire suppression license is required if applicable.
- Knowledge of NFPA 17, NFPA 17A, NFPA 96, and applicable local codes is required.
- Ability to read and interpret system drawings and schematics is required.
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills are required.
- Communication and customer service abilities are required.
- Basic computer skills for service reporting and documentation are required.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in tight or elevated spaces is required.
- Willingness to work overtime, travel to job sites, and participate in an on-call rotation is required.
Responsibilities
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of kitchen hood fire suppression systems according to NFPA 17A, NFPA 96, and manufacturer guidelines.
- Perform functional testing of detection devices, actuation mechanisms, and suppression agent discharge systems.
- Replace or recharge system components, including fusible links, nozzles, and cylinders, as needed.
- Document inspection results and note deficiencies.
- Diagnose and repair malfunctioning kitchen suppression systems.
- Install new kitchen hood suppression systems according to design specifications and code requirements.
- Upgrade or retrofit existing systems to meet current safety standards.
- Communicate inspection results, system condition, and necessary repairs to customers.
- Provide recommendations for system improvements or replacements.
- Obtain customer approvals for work performed.
- Maintain accurate inspection reports, service tickets, and repair logs.
- Ensure compliance with applicable NFPA standards, authority having jurisdiction requirements, and company policies.
- Coordinate with local fire inspectors when required for acceptance testing.
- Follow OSHA and company safety procedures while working in the field.
- Maintain company-provided tools, test equipment, and service vehicles in good condition.
- Stay current with code changes, new products, and industry best practices through ongoing training.
- Work in commercial kitchen environments and on active construction sites.
Desired Qualifications
- Technical training in fire protection systems.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 safety certification.
