Hilton bets on India as fastest-growing tourism market with 400 new hotels planned

Hilton views India as "the most exciting market for travel and tourism globally" for the next decade, predicting it will become the world's third-largest lodging market, according to Alan Watts, the company's Asia Pacific president. The optimism contrasts with weakness in China, where low consumer confidence has dampened Hilton's regional performance. Asia-Pacific revenue per available room rose just over 1% in the second quarter, entirely due to challenges in China. Hilton's other four Asia markets showed double-digit growth in North Asia and India. The company has 60 hotels under construction in India and commitments for 400 more, focusing on mid-scale brands in tier-two and tier-three cities. Watts noted that around eight out of 10 room nights in the region come from intra-Asia travellers, demonstrating the market's resilience.

Ashford's latest hotel sales.

Ashford's latest hotel sales. Sean O'Neill Today at 2:11 PM PDT Skift take. Ashford Hospitality Trust said it sold four hotels and agreed to sell two others. Plus, other hotel deal and development news. Marriott International was added to Erste Group's global equity coverage on Aug. 27. Erste called Marriott one of its latest "favorites" with further upside potential. No target price was publicized. Last week, Marriott hit a new milestone of 300 million Marriott Bonvoy members. The Highland Group reported that July's extended-stay hotel demand growth in the U.S., which was a 6.2% jump, was the highest performance in more than four years. On the supply side, extended-stay room nights available gained 4.7% in July 2026 compared to July 2025 after a below-average supply growth in the first six months of the year. Ashford Hospitality Trust said it sold four hotels and agreed to sell two others, projecting more than $60 million in future capital expenditure savings. The REIT said the majority of the proceeds from the sales will be used to pay down mortgage debt. Ashford closed the sales of Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront, La Posada de Santa Fe, Hilton Alexandria Old Town, and Embassy Suites by Hilton Palm Beach Gardens PGA Boulevard. The sales generated $252.5 million in gross proceeds, representing $280,000 per key. Ashford also said it agreed to sell the Lakeway Resort & Spa for $37.8 million, or $225,000 per key, as well as the Embassy Suites by Hilton Dallas Near the Galleria for $17 million, or $113,000 per key. Those transactions are expected to be completed by May. In a seemingly never-ending saga, a planned Omni headquarters hotel in New Orleans by the convention center received a vote of approval from the board of the Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority to overhaul its development agreement. It's a lower, revised $120 million upfront public-financing commitment for the roughly 1,000-room Omni project, replacing a much larger anticipated stream of hotel-tax support. This is an approved project-finance revision, not a completed loan: the funding source and state bond approval remain outstanding. The move replaces a financing structure that would have funneled nearly $837 million in hotel-generated tax revenues to developers over 45 years, according to WWL Louisiana. A series of recent approval delays risk imperiling a planned 2030 opening date. Hilton Worldwide said Friday that in the coming weeks, travelers in select markets will be able to discover Hilton hotels directly within Google's AI Mode and incorporate Hilton Honors points in searches through natural-language prompts. Hilton is also developing a Claude Connector that will bring property images, details, and pricing into Claude, giving travelers more context as they plan a stay. In Costa Rica, Hilton Worldwide's LXR Hotels & Resorts and Maravé Manuel Antonio will introduce a new luxury hotel and residential experience. Anticipated to open in 2029, the project sits on a nearly 40-acre estate with a rare 65 feet of titled Pacific beachfront. The seven-story resort will feature 57 accommodations, including 42 ocean-view guest rooms designed to immerse guests and owners in the surrounding rainforest, mountains and coastline, and 15 private bungalows set on the natural hillside. The project will also include 116 fully furnished branded residences. Sheraton Tribeca is the first and only Sheraton in New York City to complete the brand's next-generation renovation, joining an exclusive group of just 82 hotels out of more than 430 Sheraton properties worldwide to debut the brand's new design and guest experience. The lobby was reimagined to have community tables, private work booths, a rentable studio with integrated technology, and a theater room. The lobby also debuted the hotel's new food and beverage concept, &More, seamlessly transitioning from morning coffee to all-day dining and evening cocktails as work turned to play. Disney Vacation Club announced that the 967-room Disney's Lakeshore Lodge at Walt Disney World, Florida, resort will open July 1, 2027. The project will include rooms/villas, waterfront lake houses, a presidential suite, restaurant, and recreational spaces. JLL's Hotels & Hospitality Group sold and secured financing terms for Residence Inn Boston North Shore/Danvers, a 96-key extended-stay on 51 Newbury St in Danvers, Massachusetts. JLL represented the seller, an affiliate of PEG Companies. Torrington paid $13.5 million for a 1989-era hotel. PEG sold for 4.3% below its 2018 purchase price of $14.1 million, per deed records. Torrington acquired the asset and plans to move forward with a multifamily conversion after an initial period of continued hotel operations under the Residence Inn brand. It recorded a $16.94 million construction-oriented mortgage to support a planned conversion to over 80 apartments. JLL arranged acquisition financing for a JV between affiliates of Certares Real Estate Management and Clearview Hotel Capital. Loan proceeds were used to acquire the Hyatt Regency Savannah, a 351-key full-service hotel situated on the Savannah River. A Georgia transfer-tax filing records $105.2 million of consideration for the real-property transfer, but Ashford Hospitality Trust disclosed in an SEC filing that total cash purchase consideration was $158 million. JLL worked on behalf of the borrower, a joint venture between affiliates of Certares Real Estate Management and Clearview Hotel Capital, to secure a floating-rate loan through Real Estate at Goldman Sachs Alternatives. The property sits at 2 W. Bay St. in Georgia. Huff, Niehaus & Associates, a member of Hotel Brokers International, sold the Quality Inn Exit 4 in Clarksville, Tennessee, to In-N-Out Burger. The 6.26-acre property, prominently located off Interstate 24 Exit 4, will become a new restaurant location and two future restaurant/retail establishments. It had been a 143-room full-service hotel. Brandt Niehaus represented the seller. Skift, the parent company of Daily Lodging Report, reported Friday that, while Expedia has long been seen as the clear leader in travel's B2B business, a new Wall Street estimate suggests that Booking.com may drive more B2B hotel bookings than Expedia now. BTIG analyst Jake Fuller estimates Booking Holdings' B2B business booked around 196 million room nights over the past 12 months - about 15% more than the roughly 170 million booked through Expedia's partner business. Personnel moves. Crescent Hotels & Resorts has announced the promotion of Kristi Kastrounis to Senior Vice President of Digital Marketing. Europe news. PPHE Hotel Group reported interim results on Aug. 27 and declared a 17 pence interim dividend. A news release also detailed a £136.5 million, five-year Bank Hapoalim facility used in its Park Plaza London Waterloo freehold acquisition and a €27.6 million, five-year, 4.8% fixed-rate Aareal Bank refinancing for art'otel Rome Via Veneto. Global Hotel Alliance (GHA) added hospitality brands from Turkey and Poland when it added The Marmara Hotels and PURO Hotels, which together have 15 hotels, to its loyalty program.
