About the Job

Requirements

  • Vocational diploma from a relevant technical institution.
  • Advanced-level knowledge of and/or experience with engine products.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Complete troubleshooting, repairs, and rebuilds on engine products in a service workshop independently while coaching and developing less experienced technicians.
  • Teach apprentices to use hand tools, power tools, torque tools, and precision measurement equipment correctly.
  • Demonstrate how to dismantle, inspect, and reassemble components safely and cleanly.
  • Demonstrate how engines, fuel systems, air systems, and aftertreatment systems work using real examples in the shop.
  • Show apprentices how to identify faults, damage, wear, and failure modes, and build foundational troubleshooting skills using real units, jobs, and failures.
  • Help first-year apprentices become comfortable in the workshop, move safely, set up their workspace, and develop a technician's approach to work.
  • Teach workshop etiquette, including teamwork, communication, keeping a tidy bay, and respecting the craft.
  • Support apprentices who lack confidence or exposure by giving them structured, achievable tasks.
  • Use the standardised capability tracker to guide development, set expectations, and maintain consistency across regions.
  • Adapt coaching approaches to each apprentice and provide targeted support for identified gaps, strengths, and real-time needs.
  • Work with Service Managers, Supervisors, and Technicians to support apprentice skill development.
  • Identify capability gaps at each branch and provide targeted hands-on coaching sessions.
  • Support the integration of standard work practices and safe working methods into day-to-day workshop tasks.
  • Travel to nearby or regional sites when required; travel is usually infrequent and planned (<10%), but may increase as program needs evolve.
  • Run short practical workshop sessions, such as measuring techniques, wear-pattern identification, and torque procedures.
  • Set up hands-on problem-solving activities using failed components or stripped-down engines.
  • Guide apprentices through real diagnostic processes using actual customer units when appropriate.
  • Provide input for apprentice capability reviews based on observed workshop performance.
  • Work with the Apprentice Program Manager to identify apprentices needing additional support.
  • Develop people to meet their career goals and the organization's goals.
  • Model proactive health and safety behaviors by identifying, reporting, and participating in actions to improve health and safety.
  • Translate customer complaints into troubleshooting plans; follow guided workflows and procedures, use specialized mechanical and electronic service tools and diagnostic software to isolate failed components, validate repairs by reproducing complaints, and document troubleshooting results in business systems.
  • Identify the hardware and software tools needed for a service event, use the appropriate electronic tools to maintain products or diagnose and troubleshoot issues, and interpret tool results or recommendations to determine service-resolution steps.
  • Analyze interactions among internal and external electrical and mechanical systems, including exhaust, heating, cooling, fuel systems, driveline, aftertreatment, controls, and sensors, using tools, service publications, and measurements to diagnose and repair products.
  • Repair and maintain mechanical and electrical products according to guidelines and within standard repair times; disassemble and assemble engines or power generators using required tools; inspect and replace parts according to reuse guidelines; and perform progressive damage checks to restore products to pre-failure condition.
  • Create and verify customer, equipment, and technical information; capture data using required service tools; and document work in the service management system.
  • Obtain product technical issue information, use available resources including data-management tools, escalate issues appropriately, and record troubleshooting steps in the relevant database to support timely resolution and accurate handoffs.

Desired Qualifications

  • Apprentice-trained engine technician.
  • Locally valid driving permit.
  • Experience providing technical advice and coaching to more junior technicians.
