Requirements
  • Completion of a Licensed Practical Nursing Program.
  • Current registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.
  • Valid first aid certification with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work with community members, health professionals, and co-workers as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Initial and ongoing submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check, repeated every five years.
  • Commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel, including its policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and access to safe, reliable, and insured transportation for community-based client transport.
Responsibilities
  • Advise community members about available health services and programs through Non-Insured Health Benefits and medical services.
  • Perform nursing functions using established procedures, policies, guidelines, and standards.
  • Contribute to patient and significant-other plans of care and discharge plans based on identified patient problems and needs.
  • Document pertinent observations and interventions in appropriate records.
  • Conduct initial home visits and refer clients to Home and Community Care or appropriate services.
  • Administer medication accurately, observe patient responses, and document them in the medical record.
  • Perform primary care, including dressing changes and monitoring vital signs.
  • Report client needs, problems, and condition observations to registered nurses and physicians.
  • Administer patient travel services according to applicable policies and procedures.
  • Maintain and distribute clinical supplies.
  • Assist in coordinating accommodation for community members traveling for health reasons when needed.
  • Perform foot care procedures for clients as required.
  • Identify service gaps and inform the Manager and Department Team.
  • Provide home-support services, including meal preparation, personal care, palliative care, transportation, and transfer-of-function services as requested by the Home and Community Care or Community Health Nurse.
  • Provide follow-up visits to monitor client health, including prenatal care, hospital discharge follow-up, and follow-up for other illnesses.
  • Maintain accurate and professional client service records.
  • Prepare necessary documentation for community members.
  • Remain familiar with and updated on Health Canada policies and procedures governing community health services.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support the community and uphold shared values.

  • Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island culture, traditions, teachings, and community dynamics.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Direct experience in a First Nations health services position or community public health environment.
  • Understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
  • Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
