About the company

Moderna develops medicines built on messenger RNA (mRNA). Its products use mRNA delivered into cells to instruct them to produce specific proteins that can prevent or treat disease, with vaccines being a primary example. In practice, a dose delivers engineered mRNA into the body, cells translate it into a target protein, and the immune system responds or the protein modulates biology to combat disease. Moderna differentiates itself through its focus on building a whole mRNA medicines platform and in-house capabilities for designing, manufacturing, and scaling mRNA therapies, including rapid development and large-scale production. Its goal is to create a new category of medicines based on mRNA that can improve how diseases are discovered, developed, and treated, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Moderna, Chemed and 10x Genomics: three healthcare stocks to avoid despite a 25.2% sector rally

Healthcare stocks have gained 25.2% over the past six months, beating the S&P 500 by 16.3 percentage points. Even so, StockStory warns that heavy regulation can hurt earnings, and names three stocks to avoid. Moderna, valued at $87.04 billion, has seen sales fall 20.5% a year over five years. Earnings per share dropped 24.5% annually, and the stock trades at 46x forward price-to-sales. Chemed, worth $6.67 billion, grew revenue 4.1% a year over five years, slower than its peers. Its adjusted operating margin fell 3.9 percentage points, and it trades at 20x forward earnings. 10x Genomics, valued at $9.10 billion, saw revenue decline 1.2% annually over two years to $616.9 million. Its returns on capital are negative.

Merck CEO expects Moderna cancer vaccine's six-week production time to shorten

Merck chief executive officer Rob Davis expects the company's personalised cancer vaccine with Moderna to become faster to make over time. He told CNBC the current timeline is six weeks, from sequencing a patient's tumour to delivering the shot to the hospital. "I do think over time you're going to see that timeline shortened," Davis said. For now, the focus is on readying supply and the market. The vaccine targets the mutations in each patient's tumour and is paired with Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda. In August, the companies released positive initial late-stage data in melanoma patients. Trials are also under way in lung, bladder, and kidney cancers. Davis spoke as Merck opened its 120,000-square-foot research facility, Advance, in West Point, Pennsylvania.

AI cannot replace clinical trials soon, warns Moderna co-founder Noubar Afeyan.

AI cannot replace clinical trials soon, warns Moderna co-founder Noubar Afeyan. Afeyan cautioned against overhyping AI's ability to cure diseases such as cancer, arguing that scientific progress must be accompanied by greater humility about what researchers understand about human physiology. Updated - October 14, 2026 at 01:03 PM. Noubar Afeyan, co-founder and chairman of Moderna In | Photo Credit: Bloomberg/ANINDITO MUKHERJEE Artificial intelligence (AI) could transform scientific discovery and accelerate drug development, but replacing clinical trials with digital simulations remains a distant prospect given the complexity of human biology, Noubar Afeyan, co-founder and chairman of Moderna, said at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi on Tuesday. Afeyan cautioned against exaggerated claims about AI's potential to cure diseases such as cancer, arguing that scientific progress must be accompanied by greater humility about what researchers understand about human physiology. "I think the hardest thing will be to do what is out there these days in terms of speculation, which is simulating clinical trials and avoiding them altogether," he said. AI researchers are taking up smoking for bizarre reason, tech exec claims.

AI researchers are taking up smoking for bizarre reason, tech exec claims. By News Room 13 October 2026 3 Mins Read Smoke 'em if you got 'em? Palantir's Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar revealed in a recent interview with CBS that AI workers are bizarrely taking up smoking to prove how much they trust in the tech to save them from the hazards of lighting up. "So many AI researchers have started smoking as a way of signaling to other researchers how much they believe in AI," Sankar stated, leading the interviewer to respond that it "makes no sense." The biggest news, opinion and culture shaping California right now. Thanks for signing up! "'I believe so much in AI that it's going to cure cancer. So I'm showing you my chips are all in,'" he explained, calling it a form of "mass psychosis" and "social delusion." The tech exec claimed people have a "God-shaped hole" in their hearts, and for Silicon Valley workers, AI has become that "God." The odd remarks come amid fierce debate over the future of the technology after an employee at AI giant Anthropic recently made stark warnings that AI could kill all humans, sparking industrywide chaos. "There is a substantial probability that this technology could kill everyone," Jacob Coxon told NBC News after resigning from the AI giant last month. "This isn't hyperbole," he said. "It's not a marketing stunt." Coxon's comments have spurred a number of AI figureheads to call for a slowing of AI's development, though the federal Trump administration has dismissed the worries as a "hoax." Much of the administration's views of AI have been influenced by the other side of the debate, so-called "effective accelerationism," a philosophy surrounding AI that believes the technology has so much benefit for humanity that any slowing of it will do harm. That includes the technology's benefits for health care, with researchers beginning to use AI to help prescribe mental health drugs, give medical advice or even potentially cure cancer. In August, Moderna and Merck announced a "landmark moment" in the testing of a vaccine for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The trial took place on 1,100 patients and was only possible thanks to AI, which analyzed a piece of each patient's tumor to create a highly personalized version of the vaccine. AI's advantage comes in its ability to analyze vast sums of data - decades of opinions, case studies, research and testing results. "It allows us to consider the possibilities across all drugs and all diseases," explained Dr. David Fajgenbaum, who co-founded an AI driven non-profit called Every Cure as well as Castleman Disease Collaborative Network. "We utilize the world's knowledge, rather than relying only on what is in our brains."

Moderna stock jumps 14% on $200M NIH cancer vaccine push, but no direct revenue yet

Moderna shares jumped 14.2% on October 9 to close at $225, after reports of an NIH-backed cancer vaccine initiative. The rally also coincided with the company's addition to the Nasdaq-100 index. Novavax rose 15.8%. The Foundation for the NIH describes the Therapeutic Cancer Vaccines Initiative as a $200 million public-private effort to coordinate trials, research infrastructure, and shared data. The funding is not revenue awarded to Moderna, and no direct financial benefit has been confirmed. Moderna's revenue fell from $6.85 billion in fiscal 2023 to $1.94 billion in fiscal 2025. Analysts expect $3.39 billion by fiscal 2028. Before the rally, the stock traded at about 41.3 times next-twelve-month sales, against a five-year average of 7.3 times. On October 24, Moderna and Merck will present Phase 3 melanoma therapy data at the ESMO Congress.
