About the job

Requirements
  • 15–20+ years in direct materials, category management, strategic sourcing, or supply chain leadership, including 10+ years leading multiple organizational layers within technology hardware, energy storage, renewable energy, automotive or electric vehicle, or complex industrial manufacturing.
  • Ownership of at least $500 million in annual direct materials spend, with direct accountability for cost of goods sold and gross margin outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience scaling a portfolio and organization through rapid growth; experience taking spend through a step change of 2x or more is strongly preferred.
  • A verifiable record of sustained year-over-year cost reduction on a growing spend base, with results traceable to gross margin rather than cost avoidance.
  • Technical depth in power electronics, high-voltage equipment, enclosures and balance of plant, contract manufacturing, and complex electromechanical supply chains, sufficient to engage in specification, should-cost teardown, and bill-of-materials-level discussions.
  • Direct experience negotiating and closing complex multiyear Tier 1 agreements, including non-recurring engineering, volume commitments, and performance terms.
  • Strong financial acumen across total cost of ownership, should cost, purchase price variance, and index and foreign exchange mechanisms, with budget ownership at scale.
  • Experience partnering directly with the chief financial officer, chief procurement officer, and executive leadership.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory, tax, and government manufacturing incentive compliance, traceability requirements, and domestic content rules relevant to energy storage supply chains.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, supply chain, or business.
  • A builder and operator who has progressed through doing and delivering rather than advising.
  • Ambitious and clear about career goals, and motivated to lead a portfolio scaling effort.
  • Prepared for and motivated by the demands of a multiyear scaling effort.
  • Treats scale as leverage and sees increased volume as an opportunity to reset commercial terms.
  • Systems-level thinker with the discipline to personally go deep on the most important issues each quarter.
  • Builds team capability faster than the business adds headcount.
  • Comfortable being measured on cost of goods sold impact, purchase price variance, on-time-in-full delivery, and supply continuity.
  • Executive presence with the Board, executive team, customers, suppliers, Directors, Category Managers, and Engineers.
Responsibilities
  • Lead Fluence's global direct materials strategy and execution across power conversion, electrical systems, systems integration, and balance of plant portfolios.
  • Build the supplier base, commercial structure, organization design, and cost discipline needed to scale the portfolio while maintaining cost performance, supply continuity, and quality.
  • Own the growth and design of the organization as spend scales, with Category Managers and Specialists beneath the two category Directors.
  • Set portfolio strategy, cost targets, and supplier architecture, and lead the largest and most strategic negotiations.
  • Serve as escalation point for commercial disputes, capacity constraints, and cross-category-tower tradeoffs.
  • Design and build the direct materials organization to support growth to more than $5 billion in annual spend; own organizational design, job architecture, headcount planning, and build, buy, or develop decisions for each role.
  • Establish governance cadences, category strategy reviews, quarterly business reviews, cost reviews, and a single reporting standard across both category towers.
  • Set category-level key performance indicators and a single source of truth for commercial contracts, quality, delivery, innovation, sustainability, and risk; report a consolidated view to executive leadership.
  • Build process and systems capability that scales faster than headcount.
  • Own and evolve multiyear category strategy across the portfolio, including commodity segmentation, make-or-buy decisions, and regional supply balance.
  • Architect a globally diversified and regionalized supplier base that limits geopolitical exposure and single-source risk and provides capacity to support projected volume three to five years ahead.
  • Translate the product roadmap and manufacturing footprint into sourcing strategies with Engineering, Product, and Manufacturing.
  • Shape contract-manufacturing footprint strategy, including regional capacity placement, domestic-content qualification, and total landed cost.
  • Own the direct materials position on domestic content, foreign entity of concern eligibility, and tariff exposure to maintain incentive qualification and cost competitiveness.
  • Own the portfolio cost structure and deliver year-over-year cost reduction with direct accountability for cost of goods sold and gross margin improvement.
  • Convert volume growth into commercial leverage through Tier 1 agreements with tiered pricing, volume-based price-down curves, rebates, and capacity commitments.
  • Set and defend an annual productivity target expressed as a percentage of spend and cascade it to both Directors category by category.
  • Reduce cost through supply-base consolidation and rationalization, regional cost arbitrage, competitive rebidding, specification and design changes, and elimination of premium freight and expedite spend.
  • Lead or co-lead negotiations for major supplier agreements, including master supply agreements, long-term agreements, and contract-manufacturing agreements; secure pricing mechanisms, intellectual-property protections, volume-adherence terms, and liability governance.
  • Build and defend a multiyear cost-reduction roadmap covering value engineering, design to value, index and foreign exchange mechanisms, volume leverage, and clean-sheet negotiation.
  • Review and stress-test cost models covering labor, materials, overhead, scrap, operational equipment effectiveness, non-recurring engineering, and tooling before they reach Finance or executive leadership.
  • Establish purchase price variance, forecast accuracy, and budget governance so category commitments roll up to a credible enterprise figure.
  • Own accountability for excess and obsolete exposure, underutilization penalties, and volume-adherence enforcement in supplier agreements.
  • Sponsor Advanced Procurement at portfolio level and ensure procurement engineering is embedded in new product introduction programs to drive early supplier involvement, sourceability, and cost targets from concept through launch.
  • Maintain command of the engineering and bill of materials structure of core product lines to challenge suppliers and internal engineering on design-to-cost and manufacturability tradeoffs.
  • Represent procurement in product lifecycle decisions, including end-of-life planning, engineering change management, and excess and obsolete exposure.
  • Ensure continuity of supply through new product introduction, ramp, and sustaining phases; sponsor dual sourcing, buffer, and capacity-option strategies for highest-risk commodities.
  • Own the enterprise direct-materials risk playbook for geopolitical exposure, raw-material volatility, trade and regulatory compliance, and business continuity; report risk posture to executive leadership and the Board as required.
  • Partner with Quality and Engineering on supplier quality maturity, first article approval, corrective action discipline, and new product introduction readiness at contract-manufacturing sites.
  • Sponsor Claims and Contracts and escalate commercial disputes with strategic suppliers, partnering with Legal on escalated matters.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing Director and Category Manager bench, and build succession depth so at least one Director is ready for the role within three years.
  • Establish technical and commercial training pathways in should-cost modeling, negotiation, and supplier business-review leadership.
  • Model a coaching-forward, data-driven leadership style that scales through delegation while maintaining command of critical details.
  • Serve as the senior supply chain voice to Product Management, Engineering, Manufacturing, Finance, and Legal on direct materials matters.
  • Represent direct materials in quarterly business reviews, Board materials, and customer-facing proposal reviews involving bill-of-materials cost, lead time, and supply risk.
  • Act as executive sponsor for Tier 1 strategic suppliers, leading executive business reviews, escalation resolution, and joint roadmap alignment.
  • Deliver year-one outcomes: set and fund portfolio strategy against growth, design the organization and fill critical roles, map supplier capacity gaps against demand, build and commit a multiyear cost-reduction roadmap and deliver the first-year target, and establish the governance rhythm.
  • Deliver year-two outcomes: meet cost commitments on a larger spend base, embed volume-leverage mechanisms in major Tier 1 agreements, contract capacity ahead of demand, establish dual-source coverage for highest-risk commodities, and enable Directors to independently manage day-to-day categories.
  • Deliver year-three outcomes: operate a direct materials organization managing more than $5 billion in annual spend with supply continuity and quality intact, materially lower unit costs, contribute demonstrably to gross margin expansion, and prepare a successor.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience taking spend through a step change of 2x or more.
  • Board-level reporting exposure.
  • MBA or advanced technical degree.

Vattenfall awards 1 GWh Brunsbüttel battery storage project to Fluence.

Vattenfall awards 1 GWh Brunsbüttel battery storage project to Fluence. October 14, 2026 at 03:00 AM EDT i This article is third-party content and does not represent the views of this site. Tamar Securities, LLC make no guarantees regarding its accuracy or completeness. BERLIN, Oct. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Vattenfall and Fluence Energy, Inc. ("Fluence") (NASDAQ: FLNC), a global market leader delivering intelligent energy storage systems, services, and asset optimization software, have signed an agreement for the delivery of the planned battery storage facility in Brunsbüttel, as well as long-term service support. With an output of 254 MW and a storage capacity of over 1,000 MWh, the Brunsbüttel project, which is planned to be built at the site of the nuclear power plant that is currently being decommissioned, is expected to be among the largest battery energy storage projects in Germany and represents Vattenfall's largest battery project to date. The project is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2028. The 4-hour storage facility will utilize Fluence's Gridstack(TM) Pro 5000 platform, a large-scale battery storage solution including battery systems, power conversion equipment, and an energy management system designed to support grid resilience, renewable energy integration, and reliable system performance. Fluence will deliver the project on a turnkey basis, including engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and long-term service support, helping ensure the facility operates at high performance throughout its entire lifetime. Germany is currently the leading battery energy storage market in Europe, adding 6.6 GWh in 2025, according to SolarPower Europe. Growth in Germany's battery storage market is being driven by the rapid expansion of wind and solar power, increasing electricity-price volatility, declining technology costs, and the ability of storage assets to combine revenues from energy trading and grid services. "Projects like this battery storage facility play an important role in strengthening the resilience of the energy system and enabling the continued integration of renewable power generation. Together with Fluence as our long-term partner, we are creating a flexible asset that can respond to changing electricity market needs for many years to come. The project will further strengthen our portfolio of flexibility solutions and support the transition away from fossil fuels," said Claus Wattendrup, Head of Solar & Batteries, Vattenfall. "Our long-standing relationship with Vattenfall now spans eight projects across three European countries, reflecting our shared vision for a more flexible energy system. Having delivered more than 20 battery energy storage projects in Germany, Fluence is proud to be a leader in scaling battery storage as critical energy infrastructure in the country," said Julian Jansen, VP & Managing Director, Fluence Germany. Demand for utility-scale battery storage continues to grow across Germany and Europe. As wind and solar capacity expands, the need for flexible technologies capable of balancing supply and demand in real time is increasing. The Brunsbüttel battery project is a key component of Vattenfall's flexibility strategy and will nearly double the company's existing battery storage capacity. Construction of the project is expected to begin in 2027. Commissioning of the battery storage facility and its grid connection to the 50Hertz 380 kV transmission network is planned for the end of 2028.
