About the company

Micron Technology designs and manufactures memory and storage chips, mainly DRAM and NAND flash, used in data centers, PCs, phones, cars and industrial equipment. It is one of only three companies that make HBM, the stacked high-bandwidth memory placed beside processors in AI servers, and it is the largest memory chipmaker based in the United States. Unlike chip designers that outsource production, Micron runs its own fabs and assembly sites in the United States and across Asia. It earns money by selling chips, memory modules and solid-state drives to cloud providers, device makers and distributors. Micron was founded in 1978 and is headquartered in Boise, Idaho.

What believers are saying

  • Demand is surging: in September 2026, Micron reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $133.19 billion, up from $37.38 billion.
  • Boise is hiring: in August 2026, Micron planned about 3,500 direct jobs at two Idaho fabs opening from 2027.
  • Sales are locked in early: by October 2026, most of Micron's 2027 HBM supply was contracted at higher prices.

What critics are saying

  • Revenue is concentrated: about half of Micron's sales came from its top ten customers in each of three years.
  • Departing engineers face scrutiny: in September 2026, Micron sued rival YMTC for hiring away at least 20 engineers.
  • Boise is feeling the strain: an August 2026 report found the $50 billion Idaho buildout straining local infrastructure.

What makes Micron Technology unique

  • AI memory is a three-player club: only Micron, SK hynix and Samsung make HBM, the stacked memory inside AI servers.
  • It owns its factories: Micron makes chips in Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, the U.S., Malaysia, China and India.
  • Data centers drive the business: its two data center units made $34.28 billion of quarterly revenue reported September 2026.

US stock futures rise as chipmakers rebound ahead of Big Tech earnings

US stock futures rose on Monday as investors bought beaten-down chipmakers ahead of a busy week of corporate earnings. December S&P 500 E-Mini futures gained 0.52% and Nasdaq 100 E-Mini futures rose 1.11%. In pre-market trading, Intel climbed over 4%, Marvell Technology more than 3%, and Micron Technology over 2%. Last week's rout in chip and AI stocks had hit Wall Street's major averages on Friday. Meta Platforms and Tesla headline this week's earnings. Bloomberg Intelligence expects S&P 500 companies to post an average 25% jump in third-quarter earnings from a year earlier. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note stood at 5.08%. Cleveland-Cliffs jumped over 13% pre-market after swinging to a third-quarter profit.

Musk praises Micron's fair pricing as it posts $54.23B quarterly revenue despite China fears

Elon Musk praised Micron Technology for keeping memory prices reasonable while rivals "got greedy," calling competitors extortionists in a post on X. Micron's high-bandwidth memory is used in chips inside Musk's xAI data centres near Memphis, though no direct deal has been announced. Micron's shares have fallen about 16% from recent highs on fears over Chinese rival CXMT, which unveiled a next-generation DRAM design. Mizuho called the threat overblown, and Rosenblatt called the sell-off unjustified. Fiscal fourth-quarter revenue rose 379% to $54.23 billion from $11.32 billion a year earlier. Net income reached $37.70 billion, and adjusted earnings per share were $33.42, against expectations of $31.61. Micron guided first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue to $61.5 billion. JPMorgan said it has signed 26 long-term supply deals.

Micron's 80.68% margin and 379% revenue surge: real moat or cyclical peak?

Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) closed at $931.24 on October 15, up 103.67% over six months. The Insider Monkey Billionaire Index returned 15.4% and the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust 11.4% over the same period. The memory chipmaker's operating margin has reached 80.68%, with return on equity at 88.26%. Revenue grew 379.3% from the same quarter last year. Micron is one of three companies making the working memory used in data centres, and its chips for artificial intelligence processors are sold on contracts rather than spot prices. The case against a moat is that standard memory locks in no buyer, and high margins have historically funded new capacity that ends the boom. The stock trades at 7.02 times expected earnings, against 24.78 times past earnings. Hedge fund holders rose to 184 from 154, with stakes worth about $34.94 billion.

Micron's 379% revenue growth and 7x forward P/E make it a recession-resistant tech pick

Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) could hold up better than most stocks in a recession, according to one analyst view. Its shares have been battered in recent weeks, partly because a Chinese memory chipmaker said it had made significant progress on more efficient chips. The chipmaker's largest customers are tech giants with deep pockets. Microsoft, for one, reported $35.8 billion in net income in its fiscal 2026 fourth quarter and held $76.8 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Micron's revenue rose 31% sequentially in that quarter, and 379% year-over-year. It expects a stronger fiscal 2027, backed by multi-year agreements with large customers. The stock trades at a forward P/E ratio of 7, which makes it one of the market's most undervalued.
