About the company

AT&T sells mobile phone plans and home internet to households and businesses across the US, and runs a wireless business in Mexico. Its business rests on two networks: a nationwide 5G wireless network and a fiber internet network that is replacing its old copper phone lines. Companies and government agencies also buy private networks, security and connectivity services from its business unit. Most revenue comes from monthly service plans plus device installment payments, and the company pushes customers to combine phone and home internet. AT&T Inc. began in 1983 as Southwestern Bell, took the AT&T name after buying its former parent in 2005, and is based in Dallas, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Fiber is AT&T's main growth bet: it targets over 40 million fiber locations by December 2026.
  • Fiber growth includes acquisitions: AT&T's February 2026 purchase of Lumen's consumer fiber unit added over 1 million customers.
  • AT&T is investing in offices: a $1.35 billion Plano campus, announced January 2026, will house nearly 6,000 staff.

What critics are saying

  • Debt stays high for years: AT&T expects about three years after its EchoStar purchase to restore its 2.5x debt target.
  • The workforce is shrinking: AT&T's headcount fell from about 141,000 to 133,000 in the year to December 2025.
  • FirstNet depends on Washington: a federal authority oversees AT&T's first-responder contract and needs renewal from Congress.

What makes AT&T unique

  • AT&T runs the national first-responder network: its FirstNet federal contract lasts until 2042.
  • AT&T bought more airwaves in July 2026: its $23 billion EchoStar deal added spectrum across about 400 markets.
  • AT&T sells phone and home internet together: 42.5% of its advanced internet homes also used AT&T wireless.

Comcast vs AT&T: 6.5% yield beats 4.6% for retirees despite breakup

Comcast looks the better dividend stock for retirees than AT&T, according to a TIKR analysis, though a planned breakup clouds its payout. Comcast yields 6.5% against 4.6% at AT&T. On $10,000, that means $650 a year from Comcast and $460 from AT&T. Comcast's dividend took 24% of free cash flow over the twelve months to June 30, 2026, versus 45% at AT&T. On fiscal 2026 estimates, the shares are 36% and 46%. AT&T plans to hold its dividend at $1.11 a share and return more than $45 billion to shareholders from 2026 to 2028. Comcast raised its dividend 7.5% a year from fiscal 2020 to fiscal 2025. Comcast plans to spin off NBCUniversal and Sky within about a year, and has not set a dividend policy for the two companies.

Five low-beta dividend stocks: Pfizer yields 5.83%, Coca-Cola raises payout since 1999

Five defensive dividend stocks offer income with less volatility than the broader market, according to a 24/7 Wall St. analysis. All five have a beta well below 1, meaning they have historically moved less than the market. Pfizer leads with a forward yield of 5.83% at $29.49 a share. AT&T yields 4.77% at $23.27, and its $1.11 dividend uses about 42% of 2026 free cash flow guidance of $18B+. Debt of $144B is its main risk. Dominion Energy yields 4.24%, while Coca-Cola and Colgate-Palmolive each yield 2.27%. Coca-Cola has raised its dividend every year since 1999, and Colgate's next ex-dividend date is October 20, 2026.

AT&T, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) have launched the fourth generation of the High-Speed Arena Network (HSAN), which carries live game content, highlights, replays, in-arena programming and stats between arenas, production facilities and media partners. Backed by more than 68,000 miles of AT&T fiber and network infrastructure, the network is designed to carry more than 118 concurrent, low-latency streams per game. It will support millions of hours of basketball viewing in the 2027-28 NBA season. AT&T also extended its multiyear marketing partnership with the leagues, continuing as Official Connectivity Partner. The relationship began in 2018. New fan events and retail activations will debut around NBA Tip-Off. AT&T will keep its branding on all WNBA team jerseys.

AT&T to sell Mexico unit to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for $2bn.

AT&T to sell Mexico unit to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for $2bn. An exit from the market has been on the table for a while October 14, 2026 US telecoms giant AT&T has struck an agreement to sell its Mexican mobile unit to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for $2 billion. The carrier confirmed the deal this week, noting that the sale will enable the company to focus on its 5G and fiber network in the US. A sale of the unit has been on the cards for some time, with reports last December swirling that Grupo Televisa was nearing a deal to acquire AT&T's Mexican unit. For Televisa, the deal would significantly grow its operations in Mexico, growing its share of total fixed and wireless subscribers in Mexico to 19 percent from eight percent. As part of the agreement, Televisa and Fintech Holdings, which owns a 22.3 percent stake in Televisa, will each take a 50 percent stake in the purchasing consortium. "We have articulated a strong belief that the AI future will run on converged networks with dense fiber assets," said John Stankey, chairman and CEO, AT&T. "This move positions AT&T Mexico to participate in that evolution and is consistent with our long-term strategy to focus our capital allocation on opportunities for growth in the vibrant US market." The carrier said it expects to close the sale in the first quarter of 2027, which is subject to customary closing conditions, including any necessary regulatory approvals in Mexico. AT&T entered the market back in 2014 after acquiring Grupo Iusacell SA for $2.5bn, before snapping up the Mexican business of NII Holdings a year later for $1.9bn. Ironically, Televisa acquired a 50 percent stake in mobile operator Iusacell in 2012, before it was bought out by its co-owner Grupo Salinas, which then sold the entire unit to AT&T. Despite AT&T's decade-long pursuit of the Mexican market, the carrier's market share in the country is around 18 percent, which is significantly behind Telcel, which commands around 64 percent. AT&T currently has more than 24.7 million wireless subscribers in Mexico. More in carrier networks.
