  • A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Three years of direct clinical nursing patient-care experience in an acute-care or specialty setting.
  • Leadership, charge, or coordinator experience.
  • Texas Registered Nurse licensure; if establishing Texas residency, permanent Texas licensure must be obtained within 60 days.
  • Basic Life Support certification or instructor status from the American Heart Association.
  • Magnet-ANCC recognized certification within one year.
  • Demonstrated skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as assessed through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform the essential job functions, especially activities affecting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers in a manner consistent with a customer-service focus and positive-language principles.
  • Strong psychosocial assessment and clinical skills.
  • Effective knowledge of community resources and the judgment and ability to select and coordinate available resources, including referrals to regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to embody the Leadership, Art and Science of Nursing behaviors at the Proficient level according to Benner’s model of clinical practice.
  • Professionalism, composure under stress, and accountability for personal and organizational commitments.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate organization, time management, and prioritization skills.
Responsibilities
  • Assist patients and families in navigating the healthcare system effectively across hospital programs.
  • Standardize and improve the efficiency of care for patients in the assigned service line or unit throughout the continuum of care.
  • Model patient-centered care and contribute at the patient, unit, service-line, and organizational levels.
  • Assist management with coordinating program education and supporting growth of the service-line program.
  • Lead unit and shared-governance activities, assess practice and improvement needs, serve as a clinical resource for program and hospital staff, and evaluate direct costs and patient outcomes.
  • Develop relationships with physicians and healthcare providers to support effective patient-care communication; liaise among ancillary departments, clinicians, physicians, and patients to support efficient patient flow.
  • Consult with interprofessional team members as a subject-matter expert, providing advanced assessment skills for care.
  • Develop educational information for nursing units and teach colleagues critical thinking by explaining decision rationales and coaching and critiquing their thought processes in complex situations.
  • Advocate for patients by preventing or resolving ethical issues and facilitating interventions to relieve patient or family spiritual distress.
  • Improve nurse satisfaction and engagement by serving as a role model and mentor, coaching staff in communication, active listening, and teamwork.
  • Coordinate patient-care activities and patients’ development within the population-specific program through personalized interaction.
  • Assist patient-care staff or directly educate patients and families about disease-specific guidelines and treatment options; educate or facilitate patients’ program introductions, resource referrals, and counseling.
  • Develop informational and educational resources and programs about program services, nursing-care principles, and advanced technical knowledge; provide formal education to groups outside the unit.
  • Drive department activities to improve patient-satisfaction scores through peer-to-peer accountability.
  • Participate in performance-improvement activities by recommending and leading improvements to patient-safety processes at the unit or service-line level.
  • Identify clinical priorities for service-line improvement, compare outcomes with national benchmarks, and recommend improvements.
  • Provide clinical expertise in complex or highly specialized care situations to providers and other healthcare professionals in the hospital and community; lead the interprofessional team in implementing plans of care as the staff nurse leader for service-line patients.
  • Contribute to service-line and hospital standards and guidelines; implement and monitor initiatives that improve core-measure compliance.
  • Participate in data-management activities, which may include abstraction, analysis, and presentation, and ensure appropriate data is collected and submitted to relevant service-line databases.
  • Implement department strategies for financial targets and mentor others through timely documentation, reduced length of stay, optimized efficiency, and other specified areas.
  • Participate in decisions affecting operational and capital needs as appropriate.
  • Lead and identify opportunities for practice changes; identify needs and develop, present, and implement educational programs for healthcare providers, patients, families, and community groups in assigned service-line areas.
  • Attend workshops and other educational programs to stay aware of current developments and trends.
  • Stay current with professional-organization standards and submit abstracts to national conferences.
  • Incorporate evidence-based practices presented to shared governance and leadership.
  • Expand nursing knowledge and coach staff to develop their knowledge, abilities, skills, and attitudes.
  • Complete and update the individual development plan on an ongoing basis.
