TDE's Punch calls out UMG layoffs and disappearing Black leadership.

TDE's Punch calls out UMG layoffs and disappearing Black leadership. "Where have all the black [people] gone in the music business???" October 16, 2026 A major Black industry vet is speaking out after Universal Music Group laid off multiple high-profile executives. On October 14, UMG announced that it was laying off several executives as the company finalized a 2024 restructuring plan. In response to news of the UMG layoffs, president of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), Terrence "Punch" Henderson, sparked conversation on X, asking: "Where have all the black ppl gone in the music business???" He also wrote about the importance of Black women's leadership in the music industry. Two of the prominent executives let go from UMG - Tunji Balogun and Nicole Wyskoarko - are Black. Beyond the high-profile executives, investment in Black genres like hip-hop and R&B have declined since the late 2010s. Hip-hop and R&B have lost market share in recent years as labels focus on catalog management and rising genres like K-pop and country. These cuts come amidst a flurry of industry-wide layoffs - Warner Music Group (WMG) and Sony have also undergone restructuring in the past few years. In 2023, WMG announced its plan to cut 270 jobs, or approximately 4% of its global workforce. That number was eventually raised to 750 that same year. The ongoing uncertainty in the music industry comes amidst a tough business environment for major labels and streamers due to looming questions about AI's impact on the industry and stalled subscriber growth on DSPs like Spotify.

Jim Roppo named Vice Chairman of Warner Records Group.

Jim Roppo named Vice Chairman of Warner Records Group. Seasoned leader brings wide-ranging expertise from nearly three decades at Universal Music Group Appointment comes amid run of chart-topping hits and global breakthroughs for Warner Records Group Warner Records Group today announced the appointment of widely respected music executive Jim Roppo to the role of Vice Chairman. Based in Los Angeles and reporting to Warner Records Group Chairman & CEO Aaron Bay-Schuck, Roppo will oversee operations across the group's labels. His start date will be confirmed at a later time. Roppo joins the company following nearly three decades at Universal Music Group, where he most recently served as Chairman and CEO of Republic Records, overseeing global strategy, operations, and artist development. Prior to that, he was President and COO of Republic Collective, an umbrella group housing flagship imprints including Republic, Island, Def Jam, and Mercury. Aaron Bay-Schuck, Chairman & CEO of Warner Records Group, said, "Everything we do is rooted in artist development, and Jim has spent his career ensuring that creatives have the tools, resources, and support to reach their full potential. Few have excelled across so many parts of our business - from digital to commerce to marketing - and that range, paired with a track record of breaking stars, will be invaluable as we accelerate the next phase of growth for Warner Records Group." Jim Roppo said, "I'm excited to join Warner Records at such an important moment, with undeniable momentum across the roster. My focus has always been on backing great music and helping teams win, and I look forward to bringing that to Warner. My biggest thanks to Aaron for this opportunity." After joining Republic Records in 2012 to modernize its marketing and commercial strategy, Roppo rose through the ranks from EVP/GM to Co-President before being named Chairman & CEO of the label in 2025. During his tenure, he helped build the label's modern commercial engine - spearheading digital, data, and international launch execution - and powered historic campaigns for the biggest artists across UMG's roster. Roppo previously held posts at Island Def Jam Music Group, rising to Senior Vice President of Sales while guiding retail and commercial strategy. He joins Warner Records Group as the company continues to break global cultural icons, with sustained creative and commercial momentum across genres. Recent highlights include pop icon Madonna's return to the label, which delivered a U.S. and U.K. No. 1 album alongside her highest domestic sales week in over a decade. There have also been massive global breakthroughs and chart-topping hits from Zach Bryan, Benson Boone, Teddy Swims, and Sombr; landmark releases from rock titans Linkin Park; dominant country runs from ACM award-winner Cody Johnson alongside rising stars Gavin Adcock, Hudson Westbrook, and Avery Anna via Warner Records Nashville; and an exciting new wave of talent including Blake Whiten, Alyssa Grace, Dijon, and AZ Chike.

Nobody's safe as big shakeup hits Universal Music Group: Def Jam, Republic, Interscope, Polydor among the impacted labels on both sides of the atlantic ashley king october 14, 2026. Universal Music Group enacts some major reductions, leading to layoffs impacting the US, UK, and possibly other affiliated organizations. Universal Music Group (UMG) has started the process of another major wave of layoffs across its operations, affecting several top executives. The move has long been anticipated, continuing a process that was first announced back in January 2024. It follows around 200 layoffs at the company's Canadian operation last month and also affects "more than 12 roles" there, which represent approximately 6-7% of UMG's workforce in Canada. Among the key departures, some of which are transitioning to consulting roles, include Jim Roppo, CEO of Republic Records; Tunji Balogun, Chairman/CEO of Def Jam; Ben Mortimer, President of Polydor UK; and Sam Riback, Co-President of Pop/Rock A&R, Interscope. The news follows the announcement just a day prior that Rebecca Allen would be stepping down from her role as Chief Artist and Strategy Officer at Universal Music Group UK after 27 years with the company. "At Universal Music Group, our consistent success has been built on our ability to anticipate industry changes. That includes acting early to better serve all our artists and songwriters and to capture opportunities in music's fastest-growing areas," said UMG in a statement to Digital Music News. "Our industry-leading investment in artist development has always guided that work and will continue to do so. We're bringing in new skills and technology and connecting expertise across our teams to deliver greater global impact and efficiency. Where we have made the difficult decision to remove certain roles, we are deeply grateful for the contributions of the people leaving us." The layoffs continue an ongoing trend affecting all three majors over the past several years, but UMG's move is significant. The company's revenue had grown to nearly $7.2 billion in the first half of the year, up 5.3% from the first half of 2025. However, costs related to consolidating UMG's $775 million acquisition of Downtown Music, along with other factors - including its shares plunging ~33% year-to-date and tepid streaming subscriber growth - have severely impeded it since then. Meanwhile, Warner Music has also recently reduced its employee roster, while Sony Music has also laid off a number of staff in recent years.

Universal Music Group announces significant changes.

Universal Music Group announces significant changes. 4pm, 14/10/26 Dickon Stainer, Chairman & CEO of Universal Music UK: "Today Record of the Day is announcing changes across the UK and Irish business that enable Record of the Day to drive the next wave of industry creativity and innovation. These are designed to place an even greater focus on delivering international opportunities for artists and their catalogues, and to set Record of the Day up for ongoing future success. I want to highlight a number of these changes: Nickie Owen is taking on an expanded role as President of Global Marketing at UMG UK. As part of this, Tom McGuinness will oversee a new International Growth Marketing division which will amplify the worldwide digital footprint of UK artists and help them build audiences around the globe. Rebecca Allen is leaving the company and stepping into a new consultancy role, drawing on her expertise after 27 years at UMG. Suzy Walby continues to lead the Artist Media and Promotions team and Shiarra Bell continues to lead Artist Relations. Ben Mortimer is leaving the company after 18 years at UMG UK, including 10 years as President of Polydor, and the past two as President of Polydor Label Group. Jodie Cammidge now becomes acting leader of Polydor Records pending the appointment of a new label president. Jo Charrington, President of Capitol UK, will provide creative input to Polydor. Alec Boateng continues to lead 0207 Def Jam. Hannah Neaves is leaving the company and will fulfil a key consultancy role for UMG UK. Sarah Boorman is taking on a new leadership role at UMR, in addition to her Youth Strategy remit. She will lead a renewed international focus on the UK's legendary catalogue. As part of this evolution, labels will now oversee both new and catalogue recordings by artists on their active rosters. Mark Crossingham will be stepping down as Managing Director of UMG Ireland, after 30 years at the company. Mark will be succeeded by longtime UMG Ireland colleague Nick Younger. Regrettably, as part of these changes, there are some valued colleagues in several departments who have been informed that they will leave the company. I would like to thank each of them for their significant contributions. I also want to recognise the impact that Rebecca Allen, Ben Mortimer, Hannah Neaves, and Mark Crossingham have had on its business and its industry. Each has played a pivotal role in the success of the UK and Ireland company." device: pc

The Game sues UMG for $500K over alleged marketing failure.

The Game sues UMG for $500K over alleged marketing failure. * Mac Dee *. Oct 3, 2026 * 14.534 Views West Coast rapper The Game sues UMG and Virgin Music Group for $500,000 following a breach of contract dispute over the promotion of his 2022 album, "Drillmatic - Heart vs. Mind." According to court documents filed by the hip-hop veteran's record label, 100 Entertainment, major music conglomerates Universal Music Group (UMG) and Virgin Music Group failed to properly distribute the agreed-upon promotional budget, resulting in lower sales revenues and lost streaming royalties. Allegations of unspent funds and zero radio budget. The lawsuit, initially reported by Billboard, was submitted to court on September 30 by attorney Michael Trauben on behalf of 100 Entertainment. The suit alleges that UMG and Virgin Music were required to administer a $500,000 recoupable marketing budget dedicated to the release cycle of "Drillmatic." However, legal filings claim the labels spent only $179,000 - roughly one-third of the committed funds. The lawsuit highlights major operational oversights, including: - Neglected Digital Marketing: Failing to execute planned digital campaigns during critical launch weeks. - No Radio Promotion: Supplying zero financial support toward getting singles onto radio airwaves. - Out-of-Pocket Expenses: Forcing 100 Entertainment to pay out-of-pocket for key campaign assets, including the music video for the Big Sean-assisted single "Stupid." "Deprived of nearly two-thirds of its bargained-for promotional support during the critical release cycle, the album did not perform as it would have had Defendants administered the marketing and promotion fund as the parties approved," Trauben stated in the official court complaint. UMG denies allegations as 100 Entertainment seeks damages. In prior legal correspondences sent to 100 Entertainment before the formal court filing, UMG and Virgin Music Group denied any breach of contract. 100 Entertainment maintains that the music giant has yet to reimburse the label for the out-of-pocket marketing expenses incurred to keep the release rollout on track. The lawsuit seeks damages to compensate for lost royalties, streaming income, and overall sales revenue, with the exact monetary total to be determined at trial. The impact on "drillmatic" Released on August 12, 2022, "Drillmatic - Heart vs. Mind" marked a major milestone in The Game's discography. The massive 30-track project featured high-profile guest appearances from top-tier hip-hop artists, including Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Chris Brown, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, and Roddy Ricch. Despite the star-studded features, the album's commercial potential was severely undermined by the alleged lack of label support - a issue at the heart of the ongoing lawsuit.
