Requirements
  • The role requires 8+ years of industry experience in data science, machine learning, or applied research, including at least 4 years managing senior individual contributors and front-line managers.
  • The candidate must have direct experience leading data science or machine learning work in autonomous vehicles or advanced driver-assistance systems, robotics, large-scale computer vision systems, simulation and synthetic data, reinforcement learning, or large-scale machine learning platforms.
  • The candidate must have a demonstrated track record leading a team of 10 or more through a major delivery such as a production launch, major model rollout, regulatory milestone, or significant operational design domain or product expansion.
  • The candidate must have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Robotics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • The candidate must have strong programming skills in Python and working familiarity with production machine learning stacks used in modern autonomous vehicle and robotics environments, including PyTorch or TensorFlow, distributed training, dataset and feature pipelines, and experiment tracking.
  • The candidate must have experience setting measurement and experimentation standards inside an engineering or product organization, with credible examples of metrics or evaluation frameworks adopted and maintained by the team.
  • The candidate must have experience partnering cross-functionally with engineering, product, safety, and operations leaders while defending technical positions and adjusting them for business or safety constraints.
  • The candidate must be able to reason fluently about autonomous-vehicle data, including sensor logs, perception outputs, planning traces, simulator results, and operational telemetry.
  • The candidate must have personally shipped production machine learning or analytics systems within the last 3–5 years and be credible in code and design reviews with senior engineers and scientists.
  • The candidate must be able to explain complex machine learning or statistical findings to engineering, product, and executive audiences and turn vague business or safety questions into clear analytical briefs.
  • The candidate must build durable working relationships with engineering, product, safety, and operations leaders and broker disagreements between technical functions.
  • The candidate must have personally hired and developed senior data scientists and front-line managers, calibrated hiring standards, given direct feedback, and grown people into larger roles.
  • The candidate must prioritize roadmap work rigorously, discontinue low-leverage work, and remain responsive to legitimate cross-functional needs.
Responsibilities
  • Set and own the data science strategy across simulation and synthetic data, machine learning evaluation for perception, prediction, and planning, fleet operations analytics, and the supporting data platform, translating it into a 12–24 month roadmap with measurable milestones.
  • Lead, grow, and develop a team of senior data scientists, machine learning engineers, and front-line managers; recruit from a small expert pool, calibrate the bar, and build a hiring brand.
  • Partner with Engineering, Product, Safety, and Operations leaders to define release criteria, performance metrics, and operational design domain expansion gates, using data to guide deployment decisions.
  • Drive machine learning and analytics applications end-to-end through dataset curation, scenario coverage, modeling, offboard evaluation, productionization, and continuous monitoring of fleet performance.
  • Establish company-wide measurement and experimentation standards, including before-and-after analyses for stack changes, A/B-style comparisons in simulation, and statistically credible reporting on real-world incidents.
  • Lead team-wide quality activities, including design and code reviews, and maintain engineering rigor for production data science systems.
  • Track and trend technical performance of the autonomy stack in the field, surface root causes, prioritize fixes with engineering, and present fleet-data findings to executives, regulators, and partners.
  • Provide technical guidance to Engineering and Operations leaders on issue diagnosis, resolution, and machine learning changes likely to improve safety and service metrics.
  • Represent May Mobility’s data science work externally through publications, conference talks, partner reviews, and recruiting.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Statistics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Prior experience at an autonomous vehicle, robotics, or hard-tech company that deployed products to real customers rather than only research demonstrations.
  • Experience with simulation, synthetic data generation, sim-to-real transfer, or scenario-based evaluation for autonomous vehicles or robotics.
  • Familiarity with safety-case construction, operational design domain definition, or regulator engagement for autonomous systems.
  • Publications or conference contributions in top-tier machine learning, computer vision, or robotics venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, ICRA, or RSS.
  • Experience with C or C++ systems and/or GPU programming sufficient to engage credibly with onboard machine learning and infrastructure teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and grow junior managers and senior individual contributors into larger roles.

May Mobility has launched its fifth-generation autonomous vehicle system, combining deep learning with a reasoning engine to handle complex driving scenarios. The technology uses a world model that simulates hundreds of "what if" scenarios every 200 milliseconds, predicting up to 10 seconds into the future. The system differs from traditional AV approaches by reasoning through novel situations rather than relying solely on training data.
