Pakistan must bridge access gaps to unlock AI's economic potential, says Jazz's Kazim Mujtaba.

Pakistan must bridge access gaps to unlock AI's economic potential, says Jazz's Kazim Mujtaba. ISLAMABAD - Pakistan must address gaps in device affordability, connectivity and digital skills to unlock the economic potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and ensure its benefits extend beyond major urban centers, said Kazim Mujtaba, President of Jazz GSM, at the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Symposium on Digital Transformation and the Universal Service Fund. Speaking during a panel discussion titled "Future-proofing Universal Service for Sustainable Digital Transformation," Mujtaba emphasized the importance of translating advances in AI and digital infrastructure into practical benefits for farmers, small businesses and underserved communities. "The internet gave access to information. AI has given access to knowledge," he said, highlighting AI's potential to make expertise more widely accessible and create new opportunities for individuals, businesses and communities. Mujtaba noted that investments in data centers, computing infrastructure and advanced networks must be accompanied by affordable devices, reliable connectivity and digital skills to enable wider adoption of AI-powered services. He stressed the importance of collaboration among government, telecom operators and other industries to develop practical applications that address local needs and improve economic opportunities. He also highlighted the opportunity for the Universal Service Fund (USF) to build on its contribution to expanding connectivity in underserved areas by supporting initiatives focused on device affordability, fiber-optic infrastructure and digital inclusion. With fifth-generation (5G) device penetration estimated at just 5-7%, access to affordable, compatible smartphones remains a key challenge as Pakistan expands its next-generation mobile networks. Mujtaba said Jazz was willing to collaborate with USF on initiatives to improve device penetration and extend advanced connectivity to more communities. The discussion also highlighted the need to accelerate fiber broadband deployment. Of Pakistan's approximately 40 million households, around five million have access to fiber broadband, indicating considerable scope for expansion. Participants emphasized facilitating right-of-way access and infrastructure sharing to reduce deployment costs, improve service quality and make broadband more accessible. Satellite connectivity and emerging direct-to-device technologies were also discussed as potential solutions for remote areas and during natural disasters. Drawing on Pakistan's experience with floods, Mujtaba highlighted their potential to complement terrestrial networks when damaged infrastructure or difficult access conditions disrupt communications. The panel also examined how universal service policies could evolve alongside emerging technologies through technology-neutral approaches that allow fiber, mobile and satellite networks to complement one another. Participants discussed the importance of supportive policies on spectrum allocation, right-of-way access, digital payments and emerging technology frameworks in encouraging investment and innovation. Fellow panelists included Chaudhry Mudassar Naveed of the Universal Service Fund, Pakistan; Mohammad Jahanzeb Rahim, Member (Telecom), Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication; Umar Rauf, Director General (Telecom), Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication; Warren Suti of Papua New Guinea's National Information and Communications Technology Authority; and Wahaj Siraj, CEO of Nayatel. Yango Pakistan partners with Jazz Business to enhance driver and courier experience.

Yango Pakistan partners with Jazz Business to enhance driver and courier experience. Ad powered by advergic.com Yango Pakistan, part of the global company Yango Group, has announced a strategic partnership with Jazz Business to introduce discounted voice and internet bundles for partner drivers and couriers in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. The initiative will enable partner drivers and couriers with access to telecom packages at nearly 50% lower cost than standard market rates, helping reduce operational expenses while enabling uninterrupted connectivity on the road. The initiative is aimed at reducing monthly operating costs for partner drivers all while helping them stay connected to navigate routes and communicate easily with passengers. Reliable internet and mobile connectivity has become essential for ride-hailing and delivery operations, but rising telecom costs are adding pressure to partner drivers' monthly expenses. Driver feedback and internal research has indicated that most drivers spend around PKR 1,200 - 1,500 every month on calls and data packages just to stay active on the platform. Speaking about the partnership, Miral Sharif, Country Head at Yango Pakistan stated, "Partner drivers are the backbone of our operations at Yango, and our support for them goes beyond just business. Good internet connectivity is important for them to work smoothly and efficiently. Through our partnership with Jazz Business, we are bringing a solution that solves for a real need, all while improving livelihoods, easing financial pressure, and making sure drivers are better equipped for their journey on the road". The partnership highlights a significant collaboration between Pakistan's mobility and telecom sectors, bringing together technology and connectivity to support the country's expanding ride-hailing and delivery network. By improving access to affordable internet and call services, the initiative is expected to improve driver satisfaction, while strengthening overall platform engagement. Earlier, Yango Pakistan also launched a 'Benefits Hub' for partner drivers across the country, where they can have access to deals, discounts and subsidized packages for a variety of services including healthcare, education, fuel and lubricants, groceries amongst other daily essentials. Jazz 5G now working in 22 areas in Islamabad: here's the complete list.

Jazz 5G now working in 22 areas in Islamabad: here's the complete list. By Zohaib Shah | 3 hours ago | Jazz has expanded its 5G footprint in Islamabad, bringing next-generation connectivity to 22 key locations across the capital. The rollout marks another step in Pakistan's gradual transition toward faster mobile networks, with selected commercial hubs and high-profile zones now getting early access to 5G services. According to the latest update, Jazz has activated 5G services in multiple sectors of Islamabad. The coverage includes busy market areas, commercial centers, and important government locations. While the rollout remains limited, it signals steady progress as operators prepare for wider 5G adoption in the country. Notably, several of these sites are located in high-traffic areas where demand for faster data speeds is strong. In addition, key administrative and diplomatic zones are also part of this deployment, which reflects the operator's focus on strategic coverage. Here is the complete list of areas where Jazz 5G is now working in Islamabad: * I-9 Markaz * G-11 Markaz * Some sites of F-11 * E-11 Markaz * F-10 McDonald's * G-10 Markaz * New Blue Area, near Jazz Office * Some sites of G-9 * G-8 Markaz * Some sites of F-8 * E-7 Markaz * Some sites of F-7 * G-7 Markaz * Blue Area * Some sites of G-6 * Some sites of F-6 * Some sites of G-5 * National Assembly of Pakistan * F-5 Markaz * Supreme Court of Pakistan * Diplomatic Enclave * Embassy of Iraq, Islamabad Although the list includes 22 main zones, several entries mention partial coverage, which means 5G is currently active at selected sites rather than across entire sectors. As a result, users may experience varying speeds depending on their exact location. For now, the rollout appears to be in a testing or early deployment phase. However, it gives a clear indication of how 5G services could expand across Islamabad in the coming months. As competition grows, other operators are also expected to accelerate their own 5G plans, further improving connectivity standards in Pakistan.

Veon and GSMA Sign MoU to Co-Fund Tech Start-Ups in Pakistan

Veon and GSMA sign MoU to co-fund tech start-ups in Pakistan. By Abdul Wasay | 20 seconds ago | Global digital operator Veon has signed a memorandum of understanding with the GSMA's Mobile for Development Foundation to jointly back technology start-ups in Pakistan, with JazzWorld, the country's leading integrated digital services company, serving as the primary vehicle for the partnership. The agreement was formalised on the sidelines of MWC26 in Barcelona, with signatures from John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer of the GSMA and President of the GSMA Foundation, and Aamir Ibrahim, CEO of JazzWorld. Under the terms of the MoU, JazzWorld will co-fund Pakistani start-ups selected as grantees through the GSMA Innovation Fund's 2026 funding rounds. Selection follows a publicly announced, competitive evaluation process managed by the GSMA Foundation, focused specifically on ventures whose models generate measurable social, economic, or climate impact through mobile technology. Beyond direct financing, JazzWorld may also provide in-kind contributions including ecosystem visibility and capacity-building support to help chosen projects grow. "JazzWorld has a strong track record of working with the Pakistan's entrepreneurs to accelerate digital innovation in Pakistan. We look forward to collaborating further with the GSMA Foundation to support the next generation of entrepreneurs who are building locally-relevant digital solutions that generate growth for Pakistani communities across various service verticals," said Aamir Ibrahim, CEO, JazzWorld. The significance of the arrangement for Pakistan's startup landscape lies in what JazzWorld brings beyond a cheque. As the country's dominant digital operator, JazzWorld carries with it access to a massive subscriber base, established distribution infrastructure, and deep relationships with regulators, all of which represent substantial non-financial value for early-stage companies trying to reach scale inside Pakistan's market. The MoU also extends to Banglalink, Veon's digital operator in Bangladesh, which will participate in co-funding start-ups selected in that country under the same framework. Talking to media, John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer, GSMA and President of the GSMA Foundation, said: "Jazz and Banglalink, both part of Veon Group, play a leading role in shaping the digital landscape in Pakistan and Bangladesh... Collaborating with them will further enhance the support of the GSMA Innovation Fund for entrepreneurs driving positive social impact in these two countries." The deal places JazzWorld directly inside a structured, internationally governed funding pipeline at a moment when Pakistan's technology sector is actively seeking credible institutional backing. Telecoms operators across emerging markets have increasingly moved beyond infrastructure provision in recent years, positioning themselves as stakeholders in broader digital economy development. For Pakistan, where mobile penetration remains the primary gateway to internet access for tens of millions of people, a partnership anchored in a major carrier carries particular reach. The GSMA Innovation Fund (the "Fund") identifies and supports start-ups with models that drive positive social, economic, and climate impact through mobile technology in developing countries. Projects are selected by the GSMA Foundation transparently and on a competitive basis through a rigorous evaluation process following publicly-announced funding rounds.
