About the job

Requirements
  • A Master of Science degree or equivalent in computer science, mathematics, or a mathematical natural science.
  • Coursework in compilers, programming-language theory, language design, or model-driven engineering is a strong positive signal.
  • Evidence of completing substantial work, such as a maintained open-source repository, a peer-reviewed publication, or a strong competition result.
  • Fluent technical English.
  • A habit of stating assumptions explicitly and designing experiments that could falsify them.
  • Background in probability and statistics, including estimation, Bayesian inference, uncertainty quantification and calibration, proper scoring rules, reliability diagrams, expected calibration error, experiment design, and significance testing.
  • Linear algebra and multivariate calculus sufficient to derive training objectives, including matrix calculus, gradients, stochastic optimisation, and conditioning.
  • Discrete mathematics and graph theory, including typed and attributed graphs and hypergraphs, subgraph matching and isomorphism, graph rewriting, reachability, and basic complexity classes.
  • Mathematical logic and formal methods, including first-order logic, type systems, satisfiability and modulo theories, temporal logic, model checking, preconditions, postconditions, invariants, and refinement.
  • Sequential decision-making knowledge, including Markov decision processes, partially observable Markov decision processes, dynamic programming, model-based reinforcement learning, latent state-space models, and Monte Carlo Tree Search.
  • A strong command of at least one and working knowledge of a second area among formal languages and language engineering, category theory for compositional systems, causal inference, queueing theory and applied stochastic processes, combinatorial optimisation and program synthesis theory, or representation learning theory.
  • Professional-level Python, including type hints, packaging, pytest, profiling, asyncio, memory-aware data structures, and implementation of unbuffered, logged, restartable long-running jobs.
  • Ability to write training loops from scratch and implement custom datasets and collation, mixed precision, multi-GPU training, experiment tracking, configuration management, strict seeding, and reproducible artefacts.
  • Graph machine learning using PyTorch Geometric or DGL, including message passing, heterogeneous and typed graphs, graph transformers, and changing node vocabularies.
  • Hands-on use of Z3 or cvc5 and exposure to at least one model checker or proof assistant, such as TLA+/TLC, SPIN, NuSMV, Alloy, Lean, Coq, or Isabelle.
  • Code-as-data skills, including abstract syntax tree manipulation, tree-sitter, static analysis, dependency and interface graph extraction, and large-scale repository mining.
  • Parallel data-pipeline skills using multiprocessing, Ray, or Dask, including checkpointing, heartbeats, and cost estimation for large runs.
  • LLM engineering skills including API orchestration, structured and grammar-constrained decoding, evaluation harnesses, and token and cost accounting.
  • Linux, git, code review, and shell skills.
  • The application package must include a CV, cover letter, a link to written code, a one-page research statement, master's and bachelor's degree certificates and transcripts, and contact information for two to three academic referees.
Responsibilities
  • Work on one or two research threads involving formal architectural skeletons and composition, architecture synthesis, domain-specific language design and language engineering, local transition models and pipeline surrogates, or data reconstruction and synthetic project generation.
  • Develop formal representations including GearSpec contracts, typed attributed hypergraphs, composition algebras, semantic projections, and system-level invariants.
  • Investigate architecture synthesis as an inverse problem using constraint solving, Monte Carlo Tree Search, learned transition and value models, and formally checked language-model hypotheses.
  • Design and evolve a gear domain-specific language and its glue layer, including abstract syntax, static semantics, metamodels, projectional representations, and constraints that make architectural decisions unbypassable by construction.
  • Build fast approximate predictors for pipeline steps with calibrated uncertainty and validate them against real telemetry.
  • Reconstruct specification-to-architecture pairs from open repositories and generate synthetic projects to cover rare transitions, gaps, and counterexamples.
  • Write reproducible engineering code that other researchers can clone and run.
  • Develop training and data-processing systems for large-scale machine-learning and repository-mining experiments.
Desired Qualifications
  • Language-tooling experience with ANTLR, Xtext, Lark, or a self-written parser, type checker, or interpreter.
  • Comfort reading and extending a metamodel; JetBrains MPS experience is not required.
  • Java or Kotlin literacy.
  • Experience with JAX or compiler and SAT-SMT internals.
  • Infrastructure experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, OpenTelemetry, or Prometheus.
  • A systems language such as Rust, Go, or C++ for performance-critical search.
  • Prior experience with production software architecture or changing a brownfield system without breaking it.

Constructor Knowledge Labs

View

Constructor Knowledge Labs focuses on applied research in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. It works through collaborative projects and joint PhD programs in partnership with Constructor University, applying advanced methodologies to interdisciplinary fields like Robotics, the Metaverse, Neurosciences, Neuropsychology, Education, and Life Sciences from its base in Bremen, Germany. The center conducts research rather than selling a single product, using its expertise to tackle real-world problems by developing models, systems, and methods that can cross domain boundaries. It differentiates itself through a close university partnership, an emphasis on practical, applied research, and a multi-disciplinary approach spanning tech and science domains, aiming to produce tangible innovations. The goal is to make a meaningful impact by solving real-world challenges through applied research and technological advancement.
