Vistra stock trails market despite 30% profit jump and major power contracts

Vistra stock has fallen 16.3% over the past twelve months, underperforming the S&P 500's 17.1% gain, despite strong operational performance. The power company's second-quarter 2026 adjusted EBITDA rose more than 30% year-over-year. Vistra currently trades at 25.3 times earnings, above the S&P 500's 21.5 multiple. The company forecast 2026 adjusted EBITDA of $6.8 billion to $7.6 billion, expressing confidence in meeting or exceeding the midpoint. The company has secured long-term power contracts, including a premium-priced agreement with Meta and a 20-year deal with New Era Energy for at least 200 megawatts. Reuters reported the US will lend Vistra approximately $4.2 billion to expand nuclear generation, though this would increase its debt load to 35.4% of market value. Vistra plans to update its 2026 and 2027 guidance during its third-quarter earnings call.

Cramer tips Constellation and Vistra after 37% drops, says nuclear stocks 'pretty cheap

Jim Cramer highlighted Constellation Energy and Vistra during Mad Money, noting both stocks have declined roughly 36-37% from their highs. He considers them "pretty cheap" at current levels given demand for nuclear electricity. Constellation announced a 20-year agreement with Amazon on 30 September covering 690 megawatts, supporting over $3 billion in infrastructure investment. The company raised its full-year adjusted operating earnings outlook to $11.50-$12.50 per share. Vistra reported approximately $1.77 billion in ongoing-operations adjusted EBITDA, up $418 million, and reaffirmed its full-year range of $6.8 billion-$7.6 billion. Vistra trades at approximately 14.2 times forward earnings compared with 21.7 times for Constellation. Hedge fund holdings for Constellation declined to 73 funds from 79, whilst Vistra increased to 111 from 106.

Energy Department to invest $4.2M into nuclear power modernizations.

Energy Department to invest $4.2M into nuclear power modernizations. The U.S. Department of Energy announced it agreed to provide Vistra with up to $4.2 billion in financing. The conditional loan commitment through the DOE's Office of Energy Dominance Financing (EDF) would finance nuclear uprates and modernization across the company's nuclear fleet in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Once Vistra meets certain technical, legal, environmental, and financial conditions, the DOE will enter into a loan agreement with the company, officials said. "President Trump and Secretary Wright have set a clear direction for America's nuclear future, and EDF is financing the projects that advance that mission," EDF Director Gregory A. Beard said. "These investments will extend the life of existing reactors, increase nuclear generation, and deliver abundant, around-the-clock power to lower costs and power American prosperity for decades to come." The funding will be used to deliver more reliable energy, strengthen the grid, lower costs and meet growing power demand across the 13-state PJM Interconnection, LLC (PJM) region, officials said. The projects will preserve nearly 4 gigawatts of baseload power, the company said, enough to power more than 3 million homes. The projects will also add 433 megawatts of new nuclear capacity to meet growing demand across the PJM region. Vistra plans to invest the loan into its plants at Beaver Valley in Pennsylvania and Davis-Besse and Perry in Ohio. The loan will help the company produce more electricity from its existing plants without requiring new transmission corridors or equivalent new generation resources. The investment is also expected to support the plants' operations for an additional 20 years beyond their existing licenses. The Conditional loan commitment includes an option to finance future uprates at the company's Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant in Texas.

Vistra (NYSE:VST) shares climb 10.7% - Here's why.

Vistra (NYSE:VST) shares climb 10.7% - Here's why. October 6, 2026 Key points. * Vistra shares surged 10.7% to about $160.35 on volume more than three times the average, boosted by optimism over nuclear-power expansion. * The U.S. Department of Energy conditionally committed up to $4.2 billion to uprate and extend four Vistra nuclear plants, potentially adding 433 megawatts while reducing the company's upfront capital burden. Long-term agreements supporting AI data-center electricity demand further strengthened the growth outlook. * Analysts remain broadly positive, with a "Moderate Buy" consensus and an average price target of $217.61, but investors should weigh Vistra's high leverage and recent earnings miss against its growth prospects. * MarketBeat previews the top five stocks to own by November 1st. Vistra Corp. (NYSE:VST - Get Free Report)'s stock price was up 10.7% during trading on Tuesday. The stock traded as high as $162.69 and last traded at $160.3540. 18,000,655 shares were traded during trading, an increase of 258% from the average session volume of 5,024,565 shares. The stock had previously closed at $144.89. Vistra news summary. Here are the key news stories impacting Vistra this week: * The U.S. Department of Energy confirmed a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion for Vistra to uprate and extend the operating lives of its Perry and Davis-Besse plants in Ohio and Beaver Valley in Pennsylvania. The projects are expected to add approximately 433 megawatts of nuclear capacity while shifting much of the upfront capital burden to the federal government. * Investors see the financing as a way to improve Vistra's growth and earnings visibility without requiring as much of its own capital. The company already has long-term agreements tied to AI-related electricity demand, including a 20-year power purchase agreement with Meta and a 20-year, 207-megawatt deal with New Era Energy & Digital for a Texas data center. * A separate Google nuclear-power agreement with Constellation Energy reinforced the broader market view that hyperscalers are willing to secure decades of firm, around-the-clock nuclear power. Vistra and other nuclear generators benefited from this sector-wide repricing. * Options activity was bullish, with call-option volume rising about 52% above its typical level. Analysts remain generally constructive; BMO lowered its price target to $210 but retained an "outperform" rating. * Vistra challenged PJM's proposed resource-adequacy framework at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, arguing that it is discriminatory and could weaken future investment incentives. The outcome could affect regional power-market economics but is not yet resolved. * Risks remain from Vistra's high leverage and its latest quarterly miss: earnings and revenue fell well short of consensus estimates. The company's revolving-credit maturity extension improves liquidity, but debt and nuclear-operating risks remain important considerations. Wall Street analyst weigh in. Vistra secures $4B US federal loan to upgrade nuclear plants amid surging data centre power demand

The US Department of Energy has approved approximately $4 billion in federal loans for Vistra to upgrade three nuclear plants serving the PJM grid. The funding addresses growing power demands from data centres and other intensive users, positioning Vistra as a critical reliability provider in the tightening US power system. The loan package supports Vistra's strategy of securing long-term contracted power generation. However, the company faces regulatory uncertainty, having recently challenged PJM's Interim Resource Adequacy Service at FERC over concerns about investment impacts and capacity pricing for large loads. Vistra's business narrative projects $26 billion in revenue and $4.1 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring 10.7% annual revenue growth. Some analysts forecast higher figures of $33.4 billion in revenue and $4.9 billion in earnings by the same year.
