  • Completion of an internship under the supervision of a certified Child Life Specialist.
  • Eligibility for Professional Child Life Certification upon hire, with certification required within one year of employment.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills and familiarity with computerized patient charting systems.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, diagnoses, tests, and procedures relevant to pediatric care.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to engage effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate, responsive customer service to patients and families.
  • Ability to assess patient needs and apply critical thinking to provide appropriate interventions.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and provide interview-based, problem-solving, and critical support for pediatric patients and families.
  • Ability to frequently stand and walk, lift objects weighing 20 pounds or less occasionally, and assist with lifting and moving patients.
  • Ability to perform computer or CRT-based administrative tasks for up to 40% of work time, with related mental and visual fatigue.
  • Ability to multitask and meet urgent deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and assess a comprehensive Child Life Program that promotes the developmental well-being of children, adolescents, and their families and minimizes psychological trauma during medical treatment while maintaining normal living patterns.
  • Address the psychosocial and developmental needs of patients, ensure continuity of care, and coordinate services with the healthcare team.
  • Design and provide developmentally appropriate experiences that support the cognitive, emotional, and social growth of children and adolescents.
  • Assist with medical and psychosocial preparation for hospitalization and medical procedures, ensuring patients and families are informed and prepared.
  • Create and maintain a playroom and environment that fosters healthy play, growth, and development, including interactive materials such as bulletin boards.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to address the psychosocial needs of pediatric and adolescent patients and ensure comprehensive, coordinated care.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams, tailoring communication to different age groups and backgrounds.
  • Gather, document, and report relevant data regarding patients' developmental and psychosocial status.
  • Support and guide students and volunteers involved in the Child Life Program through mentorship and oversight.
