Grand Rapids 2024: Nonprofits ranked by largest year-over-year increase in government grant revenue. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, for the 2024 tax year, The Right Place Inc. led all nonprofits with the largest year-over-year increase in government grant revenue. The organization reported $26,177,946 in government grant revenue, up from $2,153,106 in 2023, representing an absolute increase of $24,024,840. This change equated to a 1,115.8% increase from the prior year. The ranking reflects non-profits with available IRS Form 990-series government grant revenue data for both the tax year shown and the immediately preceding year, and may not include every non-profit in the city. The figures are reported historical amounts; a large percentage increase can reflect a small prior-year base. The ranking is based on IRS Form 990 filings, the annual information returns most tax-exempt organizations file with the IRS. The form includes reported revenue, expenses, assets, governance information and compensation paid to certain people, making it a public source for comparing large tax-exempt organizations' finances. The figures reflect what each organization reported for its filing year, including total revenue, contributions, government grants, compensation, the number of employees and assets at the start and end of the year. Because nonprofits can differ by mission, structure and accounting period, the totals are best read as reported financial measures, not as a direct measure of local charitable activity. For the 2024 tax year, The Right Place Inc. reported that government grants made up 77.2% of its total revenue. The organization's total revenue was $33,920,441, compared to $9,225,403 the previous year, for a year-over-year change of $24,695,038. Total revenue grew by 267.7%. Additionally, there was a notable change in assets: total assets at the beginning of the year were $8,171,222, rising to $36,829,217 by year's end, an increase of 350.7%. Total contributions for the year stood at $29,446,131. Cure - Citizens United For Research In Epilepsy, which ranked second, reported government grants at 11.2% of its total revenue, with assets growing from $79,549,422 to $96,058,602. Talent First Inc, ranked third, saw government grants constitute 77% of its revenue for 2024. Well House, another high-ranking organization, reported an increase in government grants from $25,000 in 2023 to $411,267 in 2024, with this amount accounting for 29.9% of total revenue. Corewell Health, ranked ninth, reported the largest total revenue among the top ten with $1,957,749,115, 0.1% of which came from government grants. Hispanic Center Of Western Michigan Inc, at tenth, reported $1,663,308 in government grant revenue - 34.4% of its total revenue for the year. Contributions played a significant role for several organizations listed. For instance, Cure - Citizens United For Research In Epilepsy reported total contributions of $58,958,933 including $2,997,086 in non-cash contributions. Amplify Gr recorded $11,895,948 in total contributions, while Talent First Inc received $3,072,763. Many of these organizations experienced considerable changes in their asset balances. Amplify Gr's assets increased from $25,909,869 at the start of the year to $40,657,913 at year's end, up by 56.9%. Corewell Health's assets grew by 44.7%. Hope Network Affordable Independent Living Nphc Fka 54th Street Nphc reported an asset increase of 76.7% over the year. Tax-exempt organizations include a wide range of groups, such as charities, foundations, educational institutions and other mission-driven organizations. Under IRS rules, 501(c)(3) organizations must be organized and operated for exempt purposes, and their earnings cannot benefit private shareholders or individuals. The proposed 11-story tower will include a new emergency department, 180 private patient rooms, 17 operating rooms, and a hyperbaric chamber, the release states. The project site includes existing health system properties located at 230 Michigan Street and 330 Barclay Avenue. "This pioneering investment in our Grand Rapids community is part of our commitment to make health better by providing the latest and greatest resources to meet our patients' future healthcare needs," says Josh Kooistra, DO, president, Corewell Health West Michigan, in a release. "We've outgrown our current facility. To be able to continue to deliver exceptional care as the only Level I trauma center in West Michigan, we need to expand access and modernize facilities." Hospital tower planned in Troy. Corewell Health also plans to invest approximately $440 million in an eight-story, 423,000-square-foot tower at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, according to the organization. The facility consistently operates at more than 90% capacity and manages more than 106,000 emergency department visits annually, the press release reports. The planned Troy tower will feature 180 private patient rooms equipped with medical technologies ranging from general care through intensive care, an emergency department waiting room, and direct parking deck access to the emergency department, according to the health system. Select Medical Corporation and Corewell Health have announced a joint venture to build an 84-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The four-storey facility will be located next to Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital. The new hospital will treat patients recovering from stroke, spinal cord and brain injuries, amputations, and complex orthopaedic conditions. It will feature modern spaces and advanced rehabilitative technology focused on restoring function, mobility, and independence. The partners have worked together since 2017. The new facility will nearly quadruple Troy's current rehabilitation footprint and provide a purpose-built setting for patient recovery. The project is proceeding through regulatory and municipal reviews and is expected to open in 2029.
Corewell Health unveils $1.7B investment to build stronger healthcare for Michigan. Corewell Health is making a $1.7-billion investment in Michigan to expand healthcare access in two fast-growing regions: Grand Rapids and Troy. Major expansions at Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids and Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital will improve the experience for patients, families, nurses and physicians. The new 780,000-square-foot facility on the Butterworth Hospital campus will be a $1.34-billion investment and will include a new emergency department, 180 private patient rooms, 17 operating rooms and a hyperbaric chamber. The location includes properties at 230 Michigan St. and 330 Barclay Ave., where existing Corewell Health facilities stand. The 11-story design will require various city approvals. The proposed height allows for more efficient use of the site while reducing the building's footprint and creating additional separation from nearby neighbors. Demolition and construction are expected to begin in summer 2027. Corewell Health is investing approximately $440-million in a new 423,000-square-foot hospital tower at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, which is consistently over 90% capacity. Rising eight stories, plans for the hospital tower include 180 private rooms, a new emergency department waiting room and improved connectivity across the campus. This will create a more seamless arrival experience for one of Corewell Health's busiest emergency departments with more than 106,000 visits per year. Patient rooms will be equipped for a technology range to accommodate general through intensive care. Because the site is adjacent to the Troy hospital emergency department, the new facility will provide direct access from the parking deck to the emergency department, making it easier for patients and families to navigate the campus. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027. Corewell Health is partnering with several Michigan-based companies for this work, including The Christman Company; Spesh Construction, which will serve as the partners for Butterworth; and Barton Malow and AIMS Construction, which will serve as the partners for Troy. These companies have brought significant expertise and have strengthened the projects. Both projects will proceed through regulatory and municipal reviews. The hospital towers are expected to be completed in 2030.
