Search engine Ecosia swaps Mistral for Chinese A.I.

Search engine Ecosia swaps Mistral for Chinese A.I. Europe's push for A.I. sovereignty has a problem, and it comes from Berlin: Ecosia, the search engine that is also used by public authorities, has dropped Mistral as its A.I. supplier and is turning to open models instead, including Chinese ones such as Alibaba's Qwen, Z.ai's GLM and Moonshot AI's Kimi. That is according to Politico. The timing is awkward for Mistral, which unveiled Large 4, its most powerful model yet, this very week. Even that model falls short of the best Chinese open-weight models. Disappointed by the quality. Ecosia switched from OpenAI to Mistral only in May, as a statement of European independence. According to Ecosia's help page, A.I. summaries in search most recently ran on Mistral Small 3.2 and the A.I. chat on Mistral Small 4. Now comes the reversal: Christian Kroll, Ecosia's chief executive, is disappointed with the quality of Mistral's models, which he says lag about a year behind the competition, Politico reports. According to reports, Mistral's servers were also frequently overloaded. Mr. Kroll also questions Mistral's status as a sovereign provider, because the French company depends on money from international investors. Twice a week for free - never miss a story! Ecosia now gets its models through Melious, a German platform that runs open A.I. models on servers in eight E.U. countries. According to Melious, data never leaves Europe, and its lineup includes Z.ai's GLM 5.3, Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. Reports on the switch say it roughly halved the cost of Ecosia's A.I. services while improving performance. Mistral strikes back with Large 4. This week, Mistral introduced Large 4, a model with one trillion parameters trained in European data centers, with open weights due at the end of October. The leap over its predecessors is huge: Large 4 scores 38.4 points on the Intelligence Index from Artificial Analysis, compared with 14 points for Medium 3.5 and just 9 for Large 3. That makes it the strongest open model outside China. It still falls short of the Chinese leaders, though. In the ranking of open models, Large 4 comes in eighth, and all seven models ahead of it are from China: Price is no clear win for Mistral either. At $1.13 (about €1) per task in the index, Large 4 is cheaper than GLM-5.3 and Kimi K3 at around $2 each, but DeepSeek V4.1 Flash scores slightly higher for just $0.27 (about 24 cents). Because Mistral is still training the preview version, Large 4 could improve before the weights are released. The sovereignty paradox. The case highlights a dilemma for European A.I. policy. Anyone in Europe who wants top-tier open models currently ends up almost inevitably with Chinese developers, even if those models run on European servers. Mistral itself is betting on Chinese models: Since the summer, the company has been remaking itself into a European neocloud that sells computing capacity, model hosting and regional data control as a package. For the first time, models from other developers run on its platform, and the first one was, of all things, Z.ai's GLM 5.2. Mistral has since moved to the successor, GLM 5.3, and its model overview lists no other third-party models so far. In other words, Mistral offers its customers the very Chinese A.I. that Ecosia has now switched to. Z.ai has been on the U.S. entity list since 2025. Mistral is pushing back. Large 4 beats the Chinese models in some areas, Arthur Mensch, Mistral's chief executive, told Reuters, pointing to its cyber defense capabilities, among other things. The company also stresses that Large 4 was trained entirely in Europe and that customers can run the weights on their own servers. Aus Datenschutz-Gründen ist dieser Inhalt ausgeblendet. Google's $15 billion Finland AI push hits roadblock as regulators order halt at 2 data centers pending environmental reviews.

Google's $15 billion Finland AI push hits roadblock as regulators order halt at 2 data centers pending environmental reviews. benzinga_article 4 hours ago I'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles. Finland's Licensing and Supervision Agency ordered Google to halt construction at two data centers in Muhos and Kajaani pending environmental impact reviews. The suspension, effective by October 23, covers major activities like excavation and road building but allows minor reversible tasks. Google acknowledged the order, stating it acted in good faith under local laws. This regulatory pause affects Google's broader $15 billion AI infrastructure investment plan in Finland. Regulators have ordered Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) Google to pause construction at two planned Finnish data centers pending environmental impact reviews. On Tuesday, Finland's Licensing and Supervision Agency, or LVV, directed Tuike Finland Oy, a unit of Google, to suspend work on projects in Muhos and Kajaani. The agency requires the construction activities to stop by October 23. The suspension order covers tree and topsoil removal, excavation, quarrying, soil transfers, ditching, road construction and storage-area preparation. The order, however, does not cover planning, measurements, soil surveys or other minor, easily reversible activities. Tommi Muilu, head of LVV's environmental department, said the measures in question could alter the environment and create impacts that need to be identified and assessed through the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. Google told CNBC it understood the concerns, acknowledged that it had not met its own standards and would follow the agency's instructions. The company said it acted in good faith under Finland's Forestry Act and completed nature surveys and protection measures. As part of its biodiversity plans, Google said it intends to plant trees across 130 hectares, or about 320 acres, at the Muhos site. Alphabet did not immediately respond to Benzinga's request for comments. Read Also: Meta, Google Put $300M Into Zuckerberg-Backed $1.8B AI Biology Bet Nordic data centers draw AI giants. Nordic countries have become increasingly attractive for data centers due to their cool climate, tax breaks and abundant renewable energy. In June, French AI startup Mistral AI announced a €1.2 billion ($1.43 billion) investment with Sweden's EcoDataCenter to build an AI-focused data center at EcoDataCenter's Borlänge site. The facility would mark Mistral AI's first AI facility outside France. The suspension comes shortly after Google outlined a €13 billion (about $15.13 billion) investment to expand AI infrastructure in Finland in September. The company plans to invest over two years in the country to expand digital infrastructure, clean energy and local partnerships amid rising demand for Search, Maps and Gemini. The investment includes a 22-year agreement to support the Loviisa nuclear plant's life extension, new onshore wind capacity and a 94-MW battery system. The September commitment significantly exceeds Google's earlier expansion plans. In May 2024, the company announced an additional €1 billion (around $1.1 billion) investment in its Finnish data center campus. Price Action: On a year-to-date basis, Alphabet stock surged 10.70%, as per Benzinga Pro. On Wednesday, it climbed 0.81% to close at $347.37. West's open-source AI race heats up as Nvidia-backed Reflection AI and Mistral challenge Chinese dominance

The race among Western firms to lead in open-source AI intensified this week, with Nvidia-backed Reflection AI and French lab Mistral unveiling new models aimed at challenging China's dominance in the space. Reflection's Beam and Mistral's Le Chonk trail top Chinese models and closed systems from OpenAI and Anthropic on key benchmarks. However, both companies claim their offerings outperform other Western open-source alternatives from firms like Thinking Machines and Nvidia. Reflection CEO Misha Laskin said his target market includes heavily regulated industries and governments that cannot use Chinese models. The timing aligns with year-end budget reviews showing significant AI spending increases. The success of these Western open-source players hinges on whether organisations will accept less advanced models for certain tasks in exchange for lower costs and greater control.

Mistral AI takes on openai, anthropic with its 1 tn parameter model.

Mistral AI takes on openai, anthropic with its 1 tn parameter model. Mistral said that Large 4 is built for coding, cybersecurity, agentic workflows and multimodal tasks, with weights set to be released by the end of October. OCTOBER 7, 2026, 7:04 PM Mistral AI has launched a public preview of Mistral Large 4, a 1 trillion-parameter multimodal model nicknamed 'Le Chonk', as the French AI company looks to compete with leading models across coding, agentic workflows, cybersecurity and multimodal tasks. The company said the model is available through its preview API, with the model weights expected to be released by the end of October. Mistral Large 4, internally referred to as ML4, was trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs at Mistral's European datacentres. The company said the same infrastructure is being used to serve the public preview. "ML4 is a 1 trillion-parameter natively multimodal model with 49 billion active parameters," Mistral said in a statement, calling it its largest model to date. The company said it has been developed for coding, agentic workflows and multimodal understanding, with applications spanning cybersecurity, finance and legal work. Mistral Large 4 targets cybersecurity. Cybersecurity is one of the areas where Mistral is positioning the model against closed AI models. On the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, Mistral said ML4 ranks among the top five models globally. It scored 82% on a test involving reproducing and patching a real vulnerability in open-source software, while scoring 93% on Cybench. Mistral said the model can be deployed on private cloud or on-premise infrastructure, giving organisations control over how the system is used in security operations. The company also pointed to the model's performance on security tasks that some closed models refuse to perform."Several leading closed models, including Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, score near zero on the same test because they refuse to perform the task," Mistral said. "Defending software often starts with proving that a flaw is real," it added, arguing that refusal behaviour can limit legitimate vulnerability research and incident response. Coding and agentic workflows. ML4 scored 61.7% on DeepSWE v1.1, 59.4% on SWE-Atlas-QnA and 28.3% on Terminal-Bench 4, according to Mistral. Its combined Coding Agent Index score was 49.8%, placing it ahead of DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813 and Qwen 3.8-Max. In a blind evaluation with Surge AI, ML4 ranked second among five models for coding quality, scoring 3.74 out of 5. It trailed Claude Opus 5 at 4.22 and ranked ahead of Kimi K3, GLM-5.3 and GLM-5.2. The model also scored 59.9% on AutomationBench, which evaluates 657 business workflows across applications such as Gmail, Google Sheets, Slack and Salesforce. Mistral said ML4 also reached 1,393 Elo on AA-Briefcase, a benchmark for long-horizon knowledge work. Multimodal capabilities. Mistral Large 4 can process images, documents, charts and natural scenes. The company said it can combine visual understanding with agentic capabilities for tasks such as analysing engineering drawings, retrieving evidence from PDFs and examining large satellite images. On the Dense 200 visual-grounding benchmark, Mistral said ML4 scored 42%, compared with 41% for GPT-6 Astra. The model also targets scientific workloads. Mistral said ML4 is state of the art among open-weight models on SciCode-Verified and can perform tasks including data analysis, modelling and scientific simulations. Built around open weights. Mistral is positioning the model around open weights and self-deployment, particularly for organisations that need control over AI systems. The company said ML4 will be available across multiple regions, including a European deployment operated by Mistral under European law. More than 160 languages were represented in a significant share of the model's training data, including all official languages of the European Union, according to Mistral. The company said ML4 was developed with enterprises across finance, engineering, manufacturing, logistics, pharmaceuticals, science, shipping and the public sector. Its training and customisation environment is based on the same system Mistral offers customers through Mistral Forge. Weights coming this month. Mistral said it will release the model weights by the end of October along with more details about its architecture, benchmarks and post-training methods. The company said the model is part of a roadmap funded by its €3 billion Series D, which it described as the largest equity round raised by a European technology company. Mistral is also scaling compute capacity at its European datacentres. For now, Mistral Large 4 is still undergoing reinforcement-learning training. The company said that at its current scale of around 3,000 GPUs, a single training run produces about 33 billion tokens a day, including around 16 billion trainable completion tokens after filtering and masking.
