H1 acquires Defacto Health to boost provider network intelligence for health plans

H1 has acquired Defacto Health, a healthcare data company specialising in provider network intelligence. The deal, comprising cash and stock with undisclosed value, marks H1's third acquisition in two years following purchases of Ribbon Health and Veda Data Solutions in 2025. Defacto Health maintains data on payer networks, healthcare providers and insurance plan acceptance. The acquisition addresses a critical need, as provider insurance acceptance queries account for 50% of H1's support tickets, according to CEO Ariel Katz. Defacto's co-founders Ron Urwongse and Tarun Theogaraj will join H1. Both previously led provider data initiatives at CAQH. The move strengthens H1's position as US regulators crack down on inaccurate provider directories. H1 claims 85% of top pharma companies and 9 out of 10 leading health plans as customers.

Smarter care navigation: guiding patients to the right care with AI and data.

Smarter care navigation: guiding patients to the right care with AI and data. A fragmented system meets a data-driven solution. Despite decades of progress in digitizing healthcare, patient data remains siloed and disconnected, leaving patients to navigate a fragmented and complex system. At the same time, regulatory pressure has pushed the industry toward patient-controlled data, standardized exchange, and greater transparency. But in practice, provider information is often outdated or incomplete, and patients are still left navigating a manual, disjointed process to find care and coordinate next steps. "Over the past 20 years, we've made progress in digitizing healthcare, but the data itself is still siloed, inconsistent, and difficult to use in a meaningful way." - Bill Grimes, CEO & Founder at Appy Health For Bill, this gap between where the industry is headed and how it actually operates became the catalyst for building something fundamentally different. Building Appy Health and the data challenge. Appy Health was created to address a fundamental challenge in healthcare: giving patients true ownership and control over their health information while simplifying how they navigate care. Rather than building another point solution, it introduces a patient-controlled health data layer that enables individuals to own, manage, and securely use their health information across their entire care journey. Bill describes Appy Health as a "digital care guide and electronic passport," designed to bridge gaps across the healthcare continuum and provide a unified, 360° view of the patient journey. The goal is to eliminate friction, reduce complexity, and enable patients to actively participate in their care. As the platform evolved, one challenge became clear: the system is only as effective as the data behind it. Provider data, a critical input for care navigation, is often outdated, inconsistent, or incomplete, despite increasing regulatory pressure to maintain accuracy. At Appy Health, data accuracy is critical to ensuring patients are guided to the right care, at the right time. "Our priority is delivering a consumer-grade patient experience. That cannot happen without accurate, complete, and reliable provider data." To meet that standard, Appy Health chose to integrate H1 APIs, ensuring its platform is powered by high-quality, continuously maintained data that meets stringent regulatory requirements. Build vs. Buy: why Appy Health partnered for data. While Appy Health built its platform and technology in-house, the team made a deliberate decision when it came to provider data. Rather than attempting to build and maintain this data internally, Appy Health evaluated external partners capable of meeting its standards for accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance. After evaluating multiple options, H1 quickly emerged as a clear fit, meeting Appy Health's requirements for data quality, depth, and reliability. Appy Health ultimately chose to integrate H1's APIs, ensuring that the data powering its platform is continuously maintained, up-to-date, and aligned with stringent regulatory requirements. Data quality: the foundation of intelligent care. For Appy Health, data quality is not just important; it is foundational. The platform's AI precision care coordination depends on structured, validated data across multiple dimensions, including provider credentials, network participation, pricing, availability, and clinical expertise. Appy Health has spent over four years developing comprehensive provider profiles requiring thousands of data elements, making completeness and depth critical to performance. Without high-quality data, even the most advanced AI cannot deliver reliable results. "In healthcare, trust depends on accuracy. High-quality data ensures our AI recommendations are not only intelligent, but reliable." From the outset, Appy Health made data quality a non-negotiable requirement. "Our priority and commitment to deliver a consumer-grade patient experience and ensure the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of provider data will not be compromised." To meet that standard, Appy Health integrates multiple data sources and applies AI-driven harmonization, normalization, and entity resolution models to continuously validate and refine datasets. H1 plays a critical role in this ecosystem by providing high-quality, comprehensive healthcare data that supports accurate matching and real-world decision-making at scale. Transforming healthcare navigation through precision care coordination. With a strong foundation of high-quality data and AI-driven technology, Appy Health transforms how patients navigate care, moving beyond traditional search to intelligent, real-time care orchestration. Appy Health's AI-powered platform is designed to transform healthcare navigation and precision care coordination. Patients can describe symptoms or concerns in natural language, through text or voice, and the system dynamically interprets clinical context, assesses urgency, and recommends the appropriate level of care. From there, Appy Health performs a multidimensional provider-matching process that goes far beyond a simple directory search, evaluating factors like insurance coverage, proximity, preferences, provider expertise, and availability to generate a personalized, ranked shortlist of providers. This matching is powered by a combination of longitudinal medical data, claims data, patient-reported inputs, and healthcare intelligence from H1, enabling more accurate recommendations, proactive guidance, and earlier intervention. Rather than navigating fragmented systems, patients engage in conversation with an intelligent platform that adapts in real time, reducing friction and increasing precision. Acting as an intelligent digital care concierge, Appy Health simplifies a traditionally manual and stressful process by guiding patients through care decisions in a personalized, context-aware, and easy-to-navigate way, enhancing the patient experience. Driving impact across the care continuum. Powered by high-quality, comprehensive healthcare data from H1, Appy Health's platform enables a more connected and intelligent approach to care navigation. Patients can more easily find the right providers, understand their options, and take action with confidence. With a trusted data foundation in place, Appy Health delivers: * More accurate provider matching * Faster, more informed decision-making * Greater transparency around cost and access * A more seamless, consumer-grade, and personalized patient engagement experience "Our goal is not just to help patients find care, but to guide them to the right care, at the right time, under the right conditions."
