Requirements
  • An Associate's degree in one of the natural sciences, physical or biological; or a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma and two years of technical laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to possess a valid New York State driver's license.
  • Promotional candidates must have two years of permanent competitive status as a Laboratory Aide.
Responsibilities
  • Record test results and assemble data on water quality, biological sampling, and mosquito numbers and species composition for interpretation by technical supervisors.
  • Identify non-target organisms, adult and larval mosquitoes, and various stages and species of ticks by microscope or other means.
  • Perform chemical tests of water to determine the presence of industrial waste.
  • Perform tests on bituminous specimens, soils, concrete, and related materials.
  • Perform microbiological and biological testing to identify total and fecal coliform bacteria concentrations at various wastewater effluent locations.
  • Record information on pollutant sources by monitoring and testing toxic materials in wastewater.
  • Operate a variety of physical and chemical testing apparatus.
  • Assist in testing new products and procedures.
  • Set up, break down, and clean test apparatus.
