About the company

Slate Auto designs and sells affordable, modular electric pickup trucks with a single base model that customers customize over time with removable accessories and upgrades. The core product, the Slate Truck, is a compact battery-powered pickup built around simplicity and low cost, with a base price targeted at $25,000–$28,000. The base model is intentionally stripped of features, allowing buyers to tailor the vehicle to work, personal use, or SUV conversions through modular add-ons. The company aims to simplify manufacturing, reduce upfront costs, and offer a “blank slate” vehicle that can evolve after purchase. Production is planned in the Midwest, with capacity up to 150,000 vehicles annually and first deliveries targeted for 2026. Slate Auto differentiates itself from competitors by focusing on cost reduction, a modular, customizable design, and a direct-to-consumer approach instead of competing on premium features or performance.

What believers are saying

  • Slate closed a $650 million Series C on April 13, 2026.
  • Slate’s Warsaw plant plans and hiring for 2,000 workers strengthen U.S. manufacturing credibility.
  • Monster Jam and Crayola partnerships expanded in 2026, proving demand for customization hooks.

What critics are saying

  • Slate’s preorder emails showed December 2026 and 2027 delivery windows, signaling ramp strain.
  • Warsaw’s 2,000-worker retrofit still depends on supply chain execution, supplier quality, and training.
  • If reservations fail to convert, the 150,000-unit plant becomes an existential cash sink.

What makes Slate Auto unique

  • Slate’s June 2026 preorder flow centers the truck on a single configurable platform.
  • Slate’s factory-designed wrap ecosystem turns personalization into core product architecture, not aftermarket garnish.
  • Slate’s stripped base model keeps manual windows, no touchscreen, and low entry pricing.

Re:Build raises $2.1 billion to expand U.S. manufacturing platform.

Re:Build raises $2.1 billion to expand U.S. manufacturing platform. Key points * Re:Build said General Catalyst and JPMorganChase's Strategic Investment Group led a $2.1 billion financing, which the company says will expand its manufacturing platform and product ecosystem. [[1]] * Re:Build did not disclose a valuation, investor-by-investor contributions or a detailed use-of-proceeds schedule. [[1]] * The company says its U.S. ecosystem includes more than 2,100 employees and 2.4 million square feet of manufacturing capacity, and that it has incubated companies including Slate, Neon Aero and Ensorcell. [[1]] * Slate began inside Re:Build's ecosystem before becoming an independent company and has since raised roughly $1.4 billion, according to TechCrunch. [[2]] [[3]] Re:Build, the U.S. advanced-manufacturing company that incubated electric-vehicle startup Slate Auto, has raised $2.1 billion in a financing led by General Catalyst and JPMorganChase's Strategic Investment Group. The company said on October 27, 2026, that it will use the capital to expand manufacturing capacity and launch new industrial startups. [[1]] The financing gives Re:Build additional capital for a model that combines product engineering, manufacturing and company incubation. Re:Build did not disclose its valuation, the size of each investor's commitment or a detailed schedule for deploying the money. [[1]] A platform built around factories and new companies. Re:Build was founded in 2020 by Jeff Wilke, Miles Arnone and William Barker. Wilke previously led Amazon's consumer business. TechCrunch reported that the company has recruited other Amazon executives and described Re:Build as billing itself as "America's answer to Shenzhen." [[2]] Re:Build says it operates through two related models. It partners with industrial companies and product developers to design, engineer and manufacture products at scale. It also incubates startups by providing founding teams with capital, engineering support and access to its production network. [[1]] The company says its ecosystem employs more than 2,100 people in the United States and includes more than 2.4 million square feet of advanced manufacturing capacity. It also says it has launched hundreds of products and production systems, including unmanned aircraft systems. Those figures are company claims; the announcement did not provide a facility-by-facility breakdown or independent audit of the network. [[1]] Slate is the clearest example of the model. Re:Build developed Slate as an internal electric-vehicle venture before it became an independent company. Re:Build's case study says the project was initially incubated within its ecosystem and that Slate later partnered with Re:Build for engineering and manufacturing support. [[3]] Re:Build says it supported Slate's electrical architecture, battery systems, supplier work, production automation and advanced composite components. Its case study also describes a production concept exceeding 100,000 vehicles annually with an approximately two-minute takt time. These are Re:Build's project claims, not evidence that Slate has reached those production levels. [[3]] Slate has since raised roughly $1.4 billion, including a $650 million round announced in April 2026, according to TechCrunch. That financing was raised by Slate and is separate from Re:Build's newly announced funding. [[2]] [[4]] Where the new capital is intended to go. Re:Build said the financing will support manufacturing and new ventures across aerospace and defense, electrification, medical products, energy and environmental technology, and robotics and automation. The company also said it aims to create tens of thousands of U.S. jobs over the next decade, but it did not provide a hiring timetable or facility-level commitments tied to the financing. [[1]] The company's manufacturing approach is built around what it calls Manufacturing Constrained Design, or MCD. Re:Build says engineers consider production methods, tooling, components and cost constraints during product design rather than waiting until a product reaches the factory floor. The company says that approach can improve production speed and cost, but those comparative claims were not independently measured in the funding announcement. [[1]] General Catalyst said it first invested in Re:Build in 2024 and described the company as a platform for rebuilding U.S. industrial capacity. JPMorganChase's investment came through its Strategic Investment Group, which makes direct equity investments under the bank's Security and Resiliency Initiative. JPMorganChase said on October 19, 2026, that the group had committed $5 billion in equity investments during the initiative's first year; it did not identify the Re:Build allocation. Slate opens its first U.S. Showroom in Tesla's former Chicago store.

Slate opens its first U.S. Showroom in Tesla's former Chicago store. Dan Mihalascu Sat, October 17, 2026 at 2:32 PM PDT Autoblog and Yahoo may earn commission from links in this article. America's most affordable electric vehicle, the Slate Truck, is getting closer to the start of customer deliveries, which are expected before the end of the year. In preparation for that, Slate Auto has opened its first U.S. showroom in Chicago. The EV startup has made the announcement on its social media channels, noting that its first Slate Experience Center opened starting October 15 at 1053 W. Grand Ave in Chicago. So if you live in Chicago or the surrounding area, you can now check out Slate's $26,400 truck in person instead of using the online configurator. Out with Tesla, in with Slate Auto. Interestingly, a quick Google search reveals that the same building that's currently home Slate's first showroom used to house Tesla's first Chicago store, which opened in 2009 as the EV maker's first Midwest regional sales and service center (and the first outside California). "We're setting up shop in Chicago. Come check out the truck in person, see accessories and wraps, and skip the dealership pressure," Slate Auto wrote in an Instagram post accompanied by a video of the location's opening. Visitors are also given test rides in the Slate Truck if they register online beforehand; there's no word on test drives yet, though. Now, this doesn't mean that Slate Auto has abandoned the direct-to-consumer sales model; it just wants to have some sort of physical footprint where potential buyers can check out its products in the metal. That's what its first store and the ones that will follow are about. It's worth noting that Slate Auto has outsourced vehicle servicing, maintenance, and warranty repairs to RepairPal, which will handle that through its 4,000-strong network of independent repair shops. While that's obviously a more cost-effective solution than building a traditional dealership and factory-run service network, it remains to be seen how satisfied its customers will be with this arrangement. The Slate Truck's much anticipated debut is expected to happen before the end of the year when the first deliveries to customers will begin. The EV startup is already taking preorders online for a $300 non-refundable deposit. According to Slate's website, if you place an order now, you could get your Slate Truck as soon as July 2027. What America's cheapest EV offers for $26,400. The budget-oriented electric pickup starts at $26,400 (including a $1,450 destination charge), which makes it America's cheapest electric vehicle and electric pickup truck. That buys you 205 miles of range from a 65-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery that powers a rear-mounted electric motor rated at 135 kilowatts (181 horsepower). The small truck - it's just 174.6 inches long and 70.6 inches wide - is comparable to vintage compact pickups like the 1985 Ford Ranger and classic Toyota Pickup as far as the footprint is concerned. It can take around 1,550 pounds of payload and tow around 2,000 pounds. According to the configurator tool, the base Slate Truck, marketed as the Blank Slate, offers plenty of standard features, even if some basic ones are unexpectedly missing. Standard kit includes traction control, Electronic Stability Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, two-stage driver/passenger airbags, full-length side curtain airbags (two for the Truck and four for the SUV), seat side airbags, remote keyless entry, backup camera, auto high beam, and pedestrian identification. It also comes with a NACS connector with DC fast charging that enables it to charge the battery from 20-80% in around 30 minutes. Power windows or big screens are not part of the equipment (not even as options), with all trims getting old-school manual cranks and a tiny 4.0-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver.
