Requirements
  • Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse.
  • A current Basic Cardiac Life Support certificate is required.
  • Three to five years of recent critical care nursing experience or a Critical Care Certificate.
  • Excellent physical assessment skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, critical-thinking, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to function independently and as an interprofessional team member in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and public-relations skills.
  • Clinical skills and professional leadership capabilities focused on collaborative teamwork, patient flow, and quality improvement.
  • Working knowledge of electronic documentation.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to perform the bona fide duties of the position and the duties outlined in the Job Demands Analysis.
  • For the critical care sponsorship pathway: a current Registered Nurse certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario, one to three years of recent medical or surgical nursing experience, current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification, and demonstrated critical-thinking, problem-assessment, communication, leadership, customer-service, teamwork, and willingness-to-learn capabilities.
Responsibilities
  • Function in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency codes.
  • Ensure practice is consistent with entry-to-practice competencies, standards of practice, guidelines, and legislation.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to provide care for patients with complex health issues.
  • Provide consultation and clinical support to peers as needed.
  • Contribute to the ongoing assessment and documentation of each patient's health status.
  • Assist in developing and implementing the Plan of Care and evaluate its ongoing effectiveness.
  • Assist with the orientation and preceptorship of new staff members and students.
  • Identify and integrate safe best practices into daily activities.
  • Coordinate patient care in the assigned area.
  • Assume the charge nurse role when assigned.
  • Effectively utilize human and material resources.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical pathways.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager or delegate.
  • Complete the paid Critical Care Nursing Program through the Michener Institute when applicable.
  • Adhere to workplace health and safety duties, policies, procedures, and attendance requirements.

  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
  • A current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certificate is preferred.
