About the company

Vedanta Biosciences develops drugs based on bacterial consortia (groups of bacteria working together) to treat diseases. Using a proprietary discovery platform, the company identifies beneficial bacteria and designs rational consortia with optimized therapeutic activity, which can colonize the human intestine. The drugs are produced under CGMP standards for commercial-scale manufacturing. Unlike many biotech efforts that focus on single strains, Vedanta emphasizes defined bacterial consortia and scalable production to bring microbiome therapies to patients. Its goal is to develop and commercialize microbiome-based drugs that provide new treatment options for a range of diseases.

What believers are saying

  • August 6, 2026 financing added $60M, extending VE303 runway into 1H 2027.
  • April 2, 2026 DMC cleared RESTORATiVE303 continuation after exceeding futility thresholds.
  • Enrollment crossed 80% by August 2026, de-risking topline data expected in 1H 2027.

What critics are saying

  • January 2026 layoffs cut roughly half the workforce, signaling acute financing stress.
  • VE303 is the only near-term asset; a phase 3 miss would cripple Vedanta.
  • Microbiome rivals Seres and Ferring already commercialize C. difficile products, compressing differentiation after 2027.

What makes Vedanta Biosciences unique

  • VE303 uses eight-strain defined bacterial consortia, not fecal transplant or broad probiotics.
  • BARDA-backed RESTORATiVE303 spans 150 sites across 20 countries, showing regulatory-grade execution.
  • Vedanta's human interventional datasets and cGMP powder manufacturing create rare microbiome moats.

Vedanta Biosciences raises $60M, appoints new leadership ahead of 2027 Phase 3 data for C. difficile treatment

Vedanta Biosciences has secured $60 million in funding to support its Phase 3 RESTORATiVE303 study of VE303 for recurrent C. difficile infection prevention. The funding comprises $40 million from existing investors AMR Action Fund and BNP Paribas Asset Management Alts, plus $20 million from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. The RESTORATiVE303 trial has surpassed 80% enrollment and is expected to complete enrollment in the second half of 2026, with topline efficacy data anticipated in the first half of 2027. The study is enrolling patients across more than 150 sites in approximately 20 countries. Vedanta appointed Dr Manos Perros as executive chairman and Andrew Davis as independent board director. VE303 is an oral live biotherapeutic product consisting of eight bacterial strains designed to prevent recurrent C. difficile infection.

Vedanta Biosciences raises $50M to develop microbiome treatments for inflammatory diseases

Vedanta Biosciences, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company, has raised $50 million in equity funding to develop therapies targeting the interaction between the human microbiome and immune system. New investors include Rock Springs Capital, Invesco Asset Management and Health For Life Capital. The company's platform isolates specific strains of Clostridium bacteria from the human gut, which play crucial roles in developing regulatory T cells and maintaining intestinal barriers. Unlike traditional probiotics or faecal transplants, Vedanta's approach involves rationally designed bacterial combinations to treat infectious diseases and autoimmune conditions. The funding will advance clinical trials for the company's lead candidate for inflammatory bowel disease, expected to begin in the first half of 2017, and expand its technology platform across infectious diseases, inflammation and immuno-oncology applications.
