Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering is required.
  • Engineering Intern certification is required, or the ability to obtain certification within one year.
  • One to three years of experience with design and/or construction observation responsibilities on roadway or general municipal projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Detail orientation, self-motivation, strong interpersonal skills, and organizational skills are required.
  • A flexible working style and willingness to modify personal schedules occasionally to meet deadlines and client needs are required.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • A valid driver's license is required, or the ability to obtain one.
  • Ability to operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
  • Ability to work outdoors during construction season.
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods when performing construction observation or surveying tasks.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work the required schedule on a construction site or in the office as directed.
Responsibilities
  • Perform assigned tasks as part of project teams on civil engineering projects while learning planning, design, specifications, plans, reports, and construction observation.
  • Communicate frequently and effectively with supervisors and project managers by providing updates and progress during all project phases.
  • Attend company, project, and client meetings regularly.
  • Prepare proposals and participate in interviews for securing work for the firm, initially in a limited role.
  • Think independently and make rational judgment calls.
  • Take on and understand the role of the project engineer and the owner's on-site representative on construction projects, progressing toward project management.
  • Work with Apex team members to develop project plans and specifications.
  • Understand and follow company computer-aided design and drafting procedures.
  • Understand and follow the company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
  • Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal, and ethical manner with strong attention to detail.
  • Work independently and in a team environment.
  • Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs.
  • Travel and stay out of town as required, with possible overtime during construction season.
Desired Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and MicroStation/GeoPak or other computer-aided design and drafting-based civil design software.
