Thermo Fisher launches Nicolet RaptIR X FTIR Microscope.

Thermo Fisher launches Nicolet RaptIR X FTIR Microscope. New microscopy platform combines high-resolution imaging and FTIR spectroscopy to accelerate materials, pharmaceutical and microplastics analysis. September 28, 2026 Associate Editor, Contract Pharma Thermo Fisher Scientific has introduced the Thermo Scientific Nicolet RaptIR X FTIR Microscope, a new Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) microscopy platform aimed at making advanced chemical analysis faster, more accessible and easier to perform across a broad range of laboratory applications. The new system combines high-definition optical microscopy with FTIR microspectroscopy, enabling scientists to visualize microscopic features and determine their molecular composition in a single workflow. According to Thermo Fisher, the RaptIR X microscope builds on five decades of Nicolet FTIR innovation and is engineered to simplify FTIR microscopy for both experienced spectroscopists and newcomers. The instrument is operated through the company's OMNIC Paradigm software, which provides guided workflows for sample acquisition and analysis intended to accelerate the path from measurement to results. "The RaptIR X microscope brings the speed, precision and flexibility laboratories need to investigate increasingly complex samples, while making advanced FTIR microscopy easier to use than ever before," said Ganesh Prasad, general manager of Vibrational Spectroscopy Products at Thermo Fisher Scientific. "It's a platform that reflects our commitment to innovation, giving laboratories the confidence to move from a microscopic observation to a molecular answer, quickly and reliably." Among the system's key performance features, the company highlighted the ability to collect up to 10 spectra per second at 5-micron spatial resolution for rapid chemical mapping. The microscope also delivers 1-micron visible resolution and 5-micron infrared resolution, helping users identify and characterize microscopic features with high precision. Additional capabilities include a heavy-duty stage that can accommodate samples up to 40 mm thick and weighing as much as 5 kg, automated detector switching for reproducible measurements, and a modular architecture that can operate as a standalone system or integrate with Nicolet Apex and Nicolet iS50 FTIR spectrometers. Optional enhancements such as micro-ATR, fluorescence visualization, near-infrared microscopy and polarized analysis allow laboratories to expand the platform as analytical requirements evolve.
