About the Job

Requirements

  • A PhD in a relevant area such as statistics, statistical genetics, genetics, genomics, proteomics, or bioinformatics.
  • Experience analysing large-scale high-throughput human genetic, epigenetic, or proteomic data, including quality control and normalization where relevant.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods appropriate for large-scale omics research.
  • Full working proficiency in Python and/or R, and Unix/Linux.
  • Experience or enthusiasm for using AI tools to improve productivity in scientific research.
  • Previous experience writing highly reproducible code with GitHub, Snakemake/Nextflow, RMarkdown, or similar.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and independently supervise less experienced scientists.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse large-scale proteomic data from nationwide Scandinavian dried blood spots to develop biomarkers for understudied neonatal conditions; there may also be an opportunity to analyse genetic datasets from these blood spots.
  • Analyse sequence and genotype data from over 110,000 individuals across four birth cohorts to explore genetic influences on neurodevelopmental and perinatal traits.
  • Explore direct and indirect genetic effects using new methods and investigate time-varying genetic effects using longitudinal phenotype data.
  • Explore factors influencing penetrance of variants associated with rare neurodevelopmental conditions.
  • Study how the genetic architecture of different traits varies across the phenotype distribution.
  • Develop biomarkers for pregnancy complications from methylation-aware whole-genome sequence data on cell-free DNA from pregnant women, including methods to incorporate epigenetic and genetic information in the same assay.
  • Collaborate with groups in the UK, Scandinavia, elsewhere, and with other groups at the Sanger Institute.

About the Company

Wellcome Sanger Institute

Generates and analyzes large-scale genomic data

The Wellcome Sanger Institute performs large-scale genomics research to advance biology and health. It generates and analyzes huge sets of genetic data and applies diverse sequencing technologies to learn how DNA works and how it affects living systems. Its work is done through ambitious projects that push beyond other labs, using genome sequencing to reveal the information in DNA and how it can be used to improve health and understand life on Earth. Funded by Wellcome, the Institute has the resources and freedom to explore questions that are not easily tackled elsewhere, with findings that aim to benefit health and scientific knowledge.
