J&J Snack Foods CEO targets $25M in savings as firm exits legacy ops, eyes FY27 growth

J&J Snack Foods reported a 6.2% drop in Q3 sales to $426 million, but gross profit rose by $1 million to $151 million whilst gross margin expanded 240 basis points to 35.5%. Chief executive officer Dan Fachner attributed the margin gains to Project Apollo, the company's efficiency initiative, now expected to generate $25 million in annualised savings. Planned bakery volume reductions are winding down in Q4 and should be largely complete entering fiscal 2027. The company will focus on core products including Dippin' Dots, ICEE, SuperPretzel and churros. Retail sales increased 1.7%, with Dogsters up more than 30%, Luigi's up over 20%, and Dippin' Dots retail sales exceeding 100% growth to nearly $4 million.

Exclusive: J&J Snack Foods CEO sees a leaner business set up to return to growth.

Exclusive: J&J Snack Foods CEO sees a leaner business set up to return to growth. Vlad Schepkov Investing.com - Between winding down some legacy operations, executing major cost-cutting initiatives and navigating skyrocketing freight and fuel costs, J&J Snack Foods is going through something of a transition year. Still, despite posting a drop in Q3 sales, the company managed to both grow its gross profit and expand gross margins. Investing.com had a chance to catch up with Dan Fachner, J&J's CEO, to better understand the biggest tailwinds, key challenges, and where things are headed next. A leaner business headed for growth. J&J Snack Foods' Q3 sales dropped 6.2% from a year earlier to $426 million. Yet gross profit still increased by about $1 million to $151 million, while gross margin expanded a whopping 240 basis points to 35.5%, despite higher material, fuel and freight costs. Fachner says the gains are here to stay, pointing to Project Apollo, J&J's broad efficiency initiative, which is now expected to generate $25 million in annualized savings, up from an earlier $20 million target. "The bigger picture is that Project Apollo is doing exactly what we designed it to do," Fachner said. "It has protected our margins," adding that without the material, freight and fuel headwinds, J&J would have exceeded last year's EBITDA. Importantly, one of the biggest drags on revenue is also subsiding. Planned bakery volume reductions are winding down in Q4 and should be "largely behind us" entering fiscal 2027. "As that fades and we lean further into our core products like Dippin' Dots, ICEE, SuperPretzel and churros, plus the addition of new customers and partnerships, we believe the efficiency gains from Apollo are durable," Fachner said. Consumer trends are encouraging. Retail sales increased 1.7% in the quarter, though Fachner said that figure understates the underlying performance. "Absent the slotting fee increases tied to our innovation rollout, retail sales would have grown mid-single digits," he said. "We made a deliberate choice to increase our promotions and that is driving volumes," Fachner said, adding that the trend gives the company confidence heading into Q4 and fiscal 2027. That momentum is particularly visible across some of J&J's smaller and newer growth businesses. Dogsters retail sales rose more than 30% in tracked channels, while Luigi's was up more than 20%. Dippin' Dots has also seen strong early traction from its push into retail. "The launch of Dippin' Dots in retail along with two more sundae flavors has performed well with the brand up more than 100% with almost $4 million retail measured sales," Fachner said.

Analysts have lowered earnings forecasts across the board in the past 30 days, with FY26 and FY27 estimates down over 3% respectively. Annual earnings are expected to fall 6% this year before rebounding 9% in FY27 to $4.35 per share. Recent Q2 revenue of $344.82 million missed estimates and declined 3% year-over-year. The company has missed top-line expectations in three of its last six quarterly reports. Annual sales are projected to drop 4% in FY26 to $1.52 billion. J&J continues battling margin pressure from higher labour costs, distribution expenses, and manufacturing inefficiencies during operational restructuring.
