What believers are saying

  • September 2026’s $7.1 million seed funds flight hardware, hiring, and October missions.
  • LambdaVision’s October 2026 mission tests commercial biomaterial manufacturing beyond the ISS.
  • Vellon Space’s 2025 acquisition gives Helogen India access and ISRO-adjacent reach.

What critics are saying

  • Helogen depends on October 2026 mission success to prove customer trust and repeatability.
  • Any contamination or spacecraft failure destroys GMP credibility and future pharmaceutical bookings.
  • A $7.1 million seed cannot sustain capital-heavy orbital manufacturing through multiple launches.

What makes Helogen unique

  • HEL-IOS integrates bioreactors, sequencing, and analytics into one autonomous orbital system.
  • Starlab’s February 2026 partnership embeds Helogen inside a commercial space station ecosystem.
  • NASA TechLeap’s 2025 CELS win validates Helogen for regulated payload preparation.

Helogen raises $7.1M to manufacture biomaterials for medical implants in space

Helogen, a New York-based space biotechnology startup, raised $7.1 million in seed funding co-led by RRE Ventures and Oceans, with participation from One Way Ventures and Blisce. The company develops automated laboratory hardware and robotic manufacturing equipment that operates in microgravity to synthesise advanced biomaterials for medical implants. Its platform uses remote-controlled bioreactors and crystallisation chambers inside orbiting satellite modules, leveraging the weightless environment of space to achieve near-perfect molecular structures and material purity. Led by chief executive officer Shishir Bankapur, Helogen will use the capital to scale its automated in-orbit fabrication hardware, expand its aerospace engineering and molecular biology teams, and accelerate customer-funded biological research programmes. The cloud-linked system provides biopharma enterprises and academic research teams with commercial access to design next-generation medical implants.
