  • Signal analysis background for model identification and parameter extraction.
  • Understanding of noise mechanisms in electronic systems and ability to estimate noise in systems with digital, radio-frequency, and analog sections.
  • Ability to define complex signal processing algorithms in fixed-point and variable-bit-width environments and optimize them for performance while considering resource utilization.
  • C, C++, Python, and/or Rust coding skills, plus practical experience with professional computer-aided software engineering tools including revision control, bug tracking, and debuggers.
  • Eligibility as a U.S. Person under U.S. export control laws, including U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and certain categories of refugees and asylees.
Responsibilities
  • Work with a cross-functional team of physicists, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and optical engineers to create next-generation quantum instruments.

  • Work with a team to develop implementations that meet system-level requirements in limited-resource embedded systems and assist with translation into register-transfer-level or firmware implementations.
  • Define experiments to characterize plant behavior, measure performance metrics, and perform system identification.
  • Collaborate with electrical and software engineers to identify issues and debug systems.
  • Design algorithms for instrument control based on system goals, combining high-level requirements and direct laboratory measurements.
  • Develop custom algorithms for resource-limited systems and test plans to extract empirical data that supplements simulation results.
  • Support the transition of research-and-development outcomes to commercial devices.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working with advanced inertial measurement units, inertial navigation systems, gyroscopes, accelerometers, and GPS units.
  • Understanding of channel effects and mitigation strategies for free-space radio-frequency and optical communications systems.
  • Some register-transfer-level coding background.
  • Practical experience developing control algorithms such as Kalman filters, proportional-integral-derivative control, and state-space modeling, and ability to define measurement strategies to extract plant models for simulation and optimization.

About the company

Vector Atomic builds high-performance quantum sensing devices, including optical atomic clocks, inertial sensors like gyroscopes and gravimeters, and GPS-free synchronization hardware for defense, aerospace, and national security in harsh environments. These devices use atomic transitions to deliver extremely stable timing and precise motion data; optical clocks provide picosecond-level timing and distribute it via synchronization hardware, while inertial sensors track rotation and gravity for navigation without GPS. The company distinguishes itself through deep physics expertise, strong government contracts, and a path from lab hardware to field-ready products, while staying 100% employee-owned and investor-free; it was acquired by IonQ to merge sensing with computing and networking. Its goal is to speed the deployment of secure, GPS-free navigation and communication by integrating quantum sensing with broader quantum platforms for government and commercial markets.

What believers are saying

  • DARPA awarded IonQ a $28 million clock-extension on August 6, 2026.
  • IonQ will deliver 125 Evergreen-05 clocks to U.S. government customers.
  • Honeywell and DIU tested Vector Atomic-linked navigation hardware in September 2026.

What critics are saying

  • IonQ integration can bury Vector Atomic’s niche culture inside a public-company hierarchy.
  • DARPA’s $30 million option stays unexercised until performance and manufacturing milestones clear.
  • Quantum sensing faces commercialization risk if government demand stalls after 2027 deployments.

What makes Vector Atomic unique

  • Evergreen-05 gives Vector Atomic-derived timing in a 5-liter tactical package.
  • DARPA began funding Vector Atomic’s core clock technology in 2019.
  • IonQ now pairs Vector Atomic sensing with computing, networking, and manufacturing.
