Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of six years of dental assisting work experience is required, including two years in a lead or supervisory capacity, or qualification as a Dental Assistant Level III.
  • Current IHS radiology certification is required within 90 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within 90 days of hire.
  • Clinical Competency certification is required within 90 days of hire and every three years thereafter.
  • High Risk Competency certification is required within 90 days of hire and annually thereafter.
  • Knowledge of dental materials, dental procedures, and dental instruments is required.
  • Strong oral and written communication, advanced hand-eye coordination, leadership, and administrative skills are required.
  • Proficiency in dental practice management software and electronic health records management is required.
  • Basic internet and email skills are required.
  • The ability to work constructively with multiple staff members, train and mentor less experienced staff, set professional standards and expectations, and monitor inventory and order supplies is required.
  • The ability to perform the physical duties of the role, including extended sitting, standing, and walking; frequent bending, stooping, and reaching; manual dexterity; and lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, is required.
  • Compliance with infection control, sterilization, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and clinic safety protocols is required.
Responsibilities
  • Hire, train, supervise, and maintain certification records for dental assistants.
  • Perform all duties outlined in the Lead Dental Assistant and Dental Assistant III job descriptions.
  • Supervise the day-to-day activities and assignments of dental assistants in the dental clinic.
  • Direct weekly and monthly infection control, clinic maintenance, and quality improvement activities.
  • Recruit, onboard, and train new dental assistant employees.
  • Develop and implement workflow processes to improve dental assistant efficiency.
  • Develop and ensure completion of monthly dental assistant duties, assigning them to individual employees, including village travel coverage.
  • Complete annual performance evaluations and competencies for all directly supervised dental assistants in collaboration with dentists.
  • Lead dental assistant meetings and huddles.
  • Establish systems to record and manage certifications, attendance, disciplinary actions, equipment inventory, and supply inventory and ordering.
  • Check stocking of operatories and carts, oversee stocked-item inventory, and order clinic supplies and materials.
  • Oversee daily logs for medical emergency equipment and key equipment inventory.
  • Approve employee time sheets and maintain leave-request, sick-leave, and unscheduled-leave logs.
  • Identify staff-development needs, facilitate or provide training, and coordinate participation in appropriate training opportunities.
  • Ensure staff compliance with safety standards and identify and report potential hazards or incidents.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free clinic environment and participate in safety training and emergency-preparedness drills.
  • Promote safety and accountability within the dental team.
  • Work as a dental assistant during day-to-day dental clinic operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Dental Assisting National Board certification as a Certified Dental Assistant is preferred.
