Requirements
  • Must obtain and maintain an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, CPR/First Aid Instructor, or Basic Life Support Instructor certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain American Red Cross Lifeguarding or American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • Must complete Penn State University Bloodborne Pathogens training.
  • Must complete the Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Criminal Background Check before the first shift.
  • Must accommodate a variable work schedule including mornings, evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Students may work a maximum of 24 hours per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week during breaks; international students may work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year.
Responsibilities
  • Instruct American Red Cross Adult CPR/AED and First Aid courses and/or American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses for participants with varied ages, experiences, learning styles, and abilities.
  • Demonstrate confidence, use course materials effectively, and manage the classroom.
  • Ensure participant safety by keeping teaching and practice areas free of hazards and ensuring materials and equipment are safe.
  • Complete required paperwork and assist with lifeguard pre-employment screenings and in-service activities.
  • Respectfully manage disagreements and model positive rapport with participants, including in online communities.
  • Arrive on time for assigned shifts or secure appropriate coverage.
  • Remain calm during stressful and emergency situations.
  • Maintain regular and frequent communication with the supervisory team.
  • Interact with diverse groups in a variety of situations, use independent judgment, and act with integrity.
  • Attend and participate in employee-group and department-wide trainings and meetings.
  • Give and receive feedback, balance time commitments, recognize limitations, and work to improve as a contributing member of the Penn State Campus Recreation team.
