Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience in mechanical, electrical, and/or pneumatic maintenance, including automotive, diesel, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and railroad equipment, is required.
  • The worker must be proficient with hand and pneumatic tools and able to read repair manuals and follow instructions.
  • The worker must have strong safety awareness and be able to complete ongoing training.
  • The worker must be able to work independently or in a team with minimal supervision and adapt to changing priorities.
  • The worker must be willing to work flexible shifts, schedules, and overtime.
  • The worker must be able to occasionally operate overhead cranes and drive company vehicles.
  • The worker must pass a pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • The worker must maintain a valid driver's license and required endorsements.
  • The worker must pass a pre-employment Department of Transportation physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen.
  • The worker must pass and maintain a Department of Transportation medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle.
  • The worker must successfully complete and maintain required safety certification and testing annually.
  • The worker must regularly lift, carry, push, pull, grasp, and squeeze specified weights; climb ladders and equipment; work in confined spaces; kneel, bend, squat, sit, stand, walk on uneven surfaces, lie on the back, and reach overhead while holding tools.
  • The worker must follow verbal commands and remain aware of surroundings while exposed to moderately loud noises.
  • The worker must adapt to heat, cold, moisture, wind, and other temperature extremes.
  • The worker must work in a safety-sensitive environment.
  • The worker must pass color and vision examinations and distinguish required auditory signals.
Responsibilities
  • Perform daily inspections of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems on diesel locomotives and passenger railcars using written task lists within specified timeframes.
  • Conduct interior and exterior inspections of rail equipment as required by federal and state regulatory agencies and company policies and procedures.
  • Complete equipment inspection forms, work order forms, and other required forms.
  • Prioritize and complete repairs within specified timeframes.
  • Operate digital multimeters, pneumatic tools, basic hand tools, and testing equipment safely and proficiently.
  • Clean and maintain the work area, tools, and shop equipment.
  • Operate locomotives with or without passenger railcars attached within the maintenance facility.
  • Service rail-equipment restrooms, including waste removal and replenishment of potable water and biocide.
  • Operate a pressure washer and wash rail-equipment exteriors with an extended pole and brush when required.
  • Perform facility maintenance and in-house repairs of electrical and mechanical components when required.
  • Assist the Maintainer and Service Maintainer.
  • Read, understand, and interpret equipment repair manuals for maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
  • Participate in and successfully complete required ongoing training and periodic written, oral, and hands-on testing.
  • Report safety violations to the immediate supervisor.
  • Maintain regular, predictable attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Forklift certification is preferred.
  • Railroad Engineer, Maintenance Facility Operator, or company certification is preferred.
