Merck and AbbVie shares jump 39% and 24% in 2026 as dividend picks for a decade

Healthcare stocks are rebounding in 2026, led by Merck and AbbVie. Merck shares have climbed 39% and AbbVie's 24%, against about 12% for the S&P 500. Merck's second-quarter revenue rose 5% to $16.6 billion, beating Wall Street estimates. Keytruda sales hit $8.4 billion, though the drug will likely lose patent exclusivity by 2028. A subcutaneous version, Keytruda Qlex, may help retain market share. Merck's forward dividend yield is 2.3%. AbbVie's revenue grew 10.2% to almost $17 billion, with adjusted earnings per share up 22.9% to $3.65. Skyrizi and Rinvoq sales each rose about 24%, and neither faces US competition until 2033 and 2037 respectively. AbbVie has raised its dividend for 54 straight years, including its time as part of Abbott Laboratories.

Merck pivots from Gardasil woes to new drugs as revenue hits $16.6B

Merck has shifted its focus from the struggling GARDASIL vaccine to new medicines. On its August 4, 2026 earnings call, executives highlighted the FDA approval of LIPFENDRA, the first oral PCSK9 inhibitor, and positive Phase III results for sac-TMT. GARDASIL still brought in $1.2 billion in the second quarter of fiscal 2026, about 7% of Merck's $16.6 billion revenue. A year earlier, its sales had fallen 55% to $1.1 billion. Total revenue rose 5.1%. WINREVAIR sales reached $525 million, and CAPVAXIVE sold $142 million. Profit is the concern. Operating margin for the twelve months to June 2026 was 10.5%, against 31.2% a year earlier. Merck raised its revenue outlook but cut profit guidance because of a charge tied to buying Terns Pharmaceuticals.

Merck unveils $500M research building at West Point campus in Upper Gwynedd.

Merck unveils $500M research building at West Point campus in Upper Gwynedd. Merck officially introduced a $500 million, 120,000-square-foot research building featuring automated robotics systems and AI technology to its West Point campus Wednesday. The two-story building, called the Advance Bioanalytical Facility, was designed to streamline the analysis of biological samples from Merck's clinical development programs. Gov. Josh Shapiro joined Merck executive leadership, federal and state government officials and local community partners for Wednesday's ribbon-cutting ceremony. "My Administration has made life sciences a key part of our economic development strategy here in Pennsylvania - and Merck's major investment in Montgomery County is another major win for the Commonwealth," said Shapiro in a news release. "We are proud to partner with Merck as they expand their operations in Montgomery County, advance cutting-edge research and manufacturing, and create new opportunities for thousands of Pennsylvanians. The life sciences industry is booming in Pennsylvania and I am committed to winning more investments like this and making sure our Commonwealth remains a national leader in innovation, medicine and manufacturing." Pennsylvania secured $5 million in funding to support Merck's local expansion plans through the state's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. The Montgomery County facility's debut comes as fellow pharmaceutical firms GSK, Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly and Co. and TerraPower move forward with their own expansion projects in Greater Philadelphia, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal. Alema Galijatovic-Idrizbegovic, vice president for preclinical development and West Point site lead for Merck Research Laboratories, told the Journal that the Advance building will be home to between 150 and 200 scientists when fully operational. She expects that to happen by the end of this year or early in 2027. "It will be a combination of upskilling [existing employees] and attracting new talent," Galijatovic-Idrizbegovic said. "Given the investment we are making around robotics and automation, we expect to be attracting talent in engineering, robotics, computer science, bioinformatics and data science." The Advance building is in the center of Merck's 400-acre West Point Campus at 770 Sumneytown Pike in Upper Gwynedd. "It's surrounded by both our research and development and our manufacturing facilities," she said. "It's really a bridge between discovery and delivery of the medicine to patients." Galijatovic-Idrizbegovic told the Journal that the investment in robotics, automation and data sample management was made to support Merck's "robust and diverse" pipeline. Merck is also investing $50 million in its research and development facilities at the Spring House Innovation Park in Lower Gwynedd. The projects are part of the overall $2.9 billion that Merck is spending on new construction, renovations and other improvements in Montgomery County, according to the Journal. The company employs about 12,000 people at the West Point campus and 14,000 overall in Pennsylvania. Last year, Merck said it plans to spend more than $70 billion to expand its domestic manufacturing and research operations in the U.S. Merck's completion of its Advance Bioanalytical Facility sets the stage for $5.7 billion in large-scale building projects announced this year by other pharmaceutical firms expanding in the region, according to the Journal. Merck CEO expects Moderna cancer vaccine's six-week production time to shorten

Merck chief executive officer Rob Davis expects the company's personalised cancer vaccine with Moderna to become faster to make over time. He told CNBC the current timeline is six weeks, from sequencing a patient's tumour to delivering the shot to the hospital. "I do think over time you're going to see that timeline shortened," Davis said. For now, the focus is on readying supply and the market. The vaccine targets the mutations in each patient's tumour and is paired with Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda. In August, the companies released positive initial late-stage data in melanoma patients. Trials are also under way in lung, bladder, and kidney cancers. Davis spoke as Merck opened its 120,000-square-foot research facility, Advance, in West Point, Pennsylvania.
