Responsibilities
  • Assist the Medical Only Claims Specialist with investigating and managing workers' compensation claims.
  • Assist with determining and managing ongoing medical treatment programs, including directing care, creating panels, and approving provider requests.
  • Evaluate medical reports and correspondence for appropriate action and documentation.
  • Support customer service processes for the multifunctional claims team and collaborate with team members to ensure timely handling of claims in other states.
  • Act as a backup to the Medical Only Claims Specialist, including verifying workers' compensation coverage for employers and injured employees.
  • Document claim specifics with potential for subrogation.
  • Approve payments based on the treatment plan and medical support establishing the relationship between treatment and injury.
  • Conclude and close files following claim resolution while meeting internal performance standards, complying with state legislation, avoiding penalties, and managing expenses.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors on cost-containment efforts.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers and assist in determining appropriate responses to regulatory inquiries.
  • Compose correspondence and reports related to workers' compensation claims and set appropriate diaries.
  • Read, route, and key incoming mail; run reports; answer and respond to incoming calls on direct and automatic call distribution lines; fax and email; and complete peer work during absences to maintain uninterrupted customer service.
  • Demonstrate growth toward the more complex responsibilities of the Medical Only Claims Specialist I position.
  • Increase knowledge of the company's operations and workers' compensation insurance.

  • Progress toward or completion of an Insurance Institute of America or other insurance-related designation is preferred.
