Merck and AbbVie shares jump 39% and 24% in 2026 as dividend picks for a decade

Healthcare stocks are rebounding in 2026, led by Merck and AbbVie. Merck shares have climbed 39% and AbbVie's 24%, against about 12% for the S&P 500. Merck's second-quarter revenue rose 5% to $16.6 billion, beating Wall Street estimates. Keytruda sales hit $8.4 billion, though the drug will likely lose patent exclusivity by 2028. A subcutaneous version, Keytruda Qlex, may help retain market share. Merck's forward dividend yield is 2.3%. AbbVie's revenue grew 10.2% to almost $17 billion, with adjusted earnings per share up 22.9% to $3.65. Skyrizi and Rinvoq sales each rose about 24%, and neither faces US competition until 2033 and 2037 respectively. AbbVie has raised its dividend for 54 straight years, including its time as part of Abbott Laboratories.

Buffett warns of a "gambling mood" in markets; Vertex, Eli Lilly and AbbVie built to weather a drop

Warren Buffett, now Berkshire Hathaway's chairman emeritus, gave his bluntest warning yet at the May shareholder meeting. "We've never had people in a more gambling mood than now," he told CNBC, pointing to individuals rushing into short-term options and betting on markets. He said this behaviour is risky for those taking part and may threaten the market, possibly leading to a drop. The article suggests drugmakers as defensive picks, since patients need treatments in any economy. Vertex Pharmaceuticals leads in cystic fibrosis treatment. Eli Lilly's tirzepatide drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound, earned more than $14 billion of its $23 billion quarterly revenue. AbbVie's Rinvoq and Skyrizi each grew 24%, and it has raised its dividend for more than 50 consecutive years.

Ken Griffin's Citadel boosts AbbVie stake 546% in Q2 as defensive dividend play

Citadel founder and chief executive officer Ken Griffin made healthcare his biggest bet in the second quarter. He bought 2.7 million AbbVie shares, a 546% increase from the previous quarter, and added 6.7 million shares of Abbott Laboratories, up 349%. He also raised his Eli Lilly stake by 291%, the third-biggest individual equity add. The moves suggest a defensive stance. Healthcare stocks tend to hold up in downturns, and both AbbVie and Abbott are Dividend Kings, having raised dividends for 54 straight years. AbbVie yields 2.65% and trades at 16 times forward earnings. In the second quarter, its adjusted earnings rose 23% and net revenue rose 10%. Some 75% of analysts covering the stock rate it a buy.

AbbVie's 54-year dividend streak and $7.5B quarterly drug sales make it a rate-proof income pick

AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV) looks well placed to keep paying dividends through any interest rate cycle, according to a Motley Fool analysis. The drugmaker has raised its dividend for 54 consecutive years, including its time as part of Abbott Laboratories, which makes it a Dividend King. It generates more than enough free cash flow to cover its quarterly dividend of $1.73 per share. Of its $70.8 billion in debt, much is fixed-rate, so rate moves matter less. Skyrizi and Rinvoq brought in over $7.5 billion in the second quarter of 2026, above the $6.1 billion paid in dividends. About 90 programs are in clinical development. The dividend yield is 2.5%, lower than in the past because the share price has climbed. Pipeline setbacks remain a risk.

AbbVie announces SKYRIZI and RINVOQ data highlighting long-term clinical and endoscopic outcomes across inflammatory bowel disease at UEGW 2026.

AbbVie announces SKYRIZI and RINVOQ data highlighting long-term clinical and endoscopic outcomes across inflammatory bowel disease at UEGW 2026. Published on 10/17/2026 at 04:35 am EDT S&P Capital IQ AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV) announced the presentation of 20 new scientific abstracts from its IBD portfolio at the 2026 United European Gastroenterology (UEG) Week, October 17-20 in Barcelona, Spain. Together, the data reflect the breadth of AbbVie's research across IBD, including established therapies studied over longer treatment periods and in real-world clinical practice. Key data to be presented include long-term data in moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD)? Open-label extension and post-hoc analyses add to the evidence base for clinical and endoscopic outcomes with risankizumab and upadacitinib. Risankizumab in UC: COMMAND showed sustained clinical and endoscopic outcomes up to three years of maintenance treatment. As-observed clinical remission rates of 54.0%?73.1% and endoscopic remission rates of 38.8%?53.5% were achieved at week 96 with 180mg across advanced therapy-naïve and advanced therapy-experienced patients. Upadacitinib in CD: U-ENDURE as-observed analyses showed that clinical and endoscopic outcomes were maintained through approximately four years of treatment. At Week 144, clinical remission was achieved by 78.9% of patients receiving 15 mg and 86.6% receiving 30 mg. Endoscopic remission was achieved by 47.1% and 64.2% of patients, respectively. Interim results from the real-world UPlift study showed that 70.2% of evaluable patients (N=497) with moderate to severe Crohn's disease achieved clinical response with upadacitinib within 12 weeks, with a median time to first response of 13 days. A real-world claims analysis of patients (N=514) with UC or CD showed that patients who switched from a Tumor Necrosis Factor inhibitor (TNFi) to upadacitinib had lower rates of IBD-related hospitalizations (9.5% vs 16.3%) or surgery (6.9% vs 10.6%) over 12 months compared with patients who cycled to another TNFi. Data presented at UEGW will further expand on findings from the Phase 3 AFFIRM study evaluating subcutaneous risankizumab induction and maintenance in CD. Following the first presentation of AFFIRM results at the 2026 American College of Gastroenterology Annual Scientific Meeting, the UEGW presentations will provide additional analyses examining outcomes by prior advanced therapy exposure and further characterizing clinical and endoscopic outcomes among patients who responded to subcutaneous risankizumab induction and continued treatment. ABBV-466 is an investigational dual-targeting therapy combining risankizumab, an IL-23 inhibitor, with trosunilimab, an a4ß7 inhibitor, to address complementary drivers of inflammation in Crohn's disease. ABBV-466 is investigational and its safety and efficacy have not been established by regulatory authorities. (C) S&P Capital IQ - 2026
