Requirements
  • Completion or possession of a minimum of 180 hours of training and completion of all annual recertification requirements.
  • Maintenance of required certifications, including New York State licensure, CPR, First Aid, AED, and Fire and Life Safety Director Certification.
  • A valid New York State driver’s license in good standing.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills, with the ability to handle crises calmly and efficiently.
  • Understanding of community policing principles and ability to build inclusive team dynamics.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, Google Docs, and security software platforms.
  • Ability to manage conflict, make unbiased decisions under stress, and write clear incident reports.
  • Ability to testify in hearings and engage with legal procedures.
  • Physical ability to walk and stand for extended periods, climb stairs, move quickly around campus and its perimeter, lift at least 25 pounds, and perform bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, squatting, and other required movements.
  • An Associate’s degree.
  • At least five years of experience in security or law enforcement, including three years in a supervisory role.
  • Maintenance of a valid, clean New York State driver’s license.
  • Current certification, or eligibility and willingness to obtain, a minimum of 180 hours of training.
  • Residence in New York City.
  • If discharged from military service, the discharge must not have been dishonorable; a DD214 may be requested.
  • Strong judgment, physical fitness, and situational awareness.
  • Ability to travel and work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct interior and exterior foot and vehicle patrols.
  • Control access and egress at campus and building entry points.
  • Monitor closed-circuit television, fire and life safety, and intrusion alarm systems.
  • Deter and report criminal activity, policy violations, and safety risks.
  • Safeguard people and property against fire, theft, vandalism, and other threats.
  • Conduct advance site assessments and route planning to identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Provide close personal protection and maintain constant vigilance during movements.
  • Coordinate with local law enforcement, event security, and transportation teams.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of shift staff.
  • Respond to and manage safety, security, and facilities issues during assigned shifts.
  • Conduct random inspections of posts and facilities to assess readiness and compliance.
  • Provide coaching, training, and progressive discipline as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with internal departments and external partners, including the New York Police Department and Fire Department of the City of New York.
  • Ensure incident reporting and documentation are accurate and timely.
  • Maintain familiarity with campus operations to anticipate and respond to safety concerns.
  • Use Lenel for access control and incident reporting.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience in campus or educational security.
  • Familiarity with compliance standards, including Clery, Title IX, and ADA.
  • Prior experience supervising unionized security staff.
  • Military service, especially in law enforcement or security-related roles.
  • Graduation from a Certified Public Safety Academy.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, or public safety.
  • Prior experience in executive protection, law enforcement, or military security.
