Requirements
  • Must have at least a high school education or equivalent.
  • Must be a licensed medication technician who has successfully completed a state-approved training program and any required examinations under state law.
  • Must communicate adequately in writing and orally and effectively within an interdisciplinary care setting with residents, families, and staff members.
Responsibilities
  • Follow facility policies and procedures for administering medications to residents.
  • Note and report medication administration errors.
  • Assist in developing and implementing facility procedures or programs to identify medication errors, including when, where, and why they occur and how they can be prevented.
  • Complete and submit required administrative forms, charts, and reports.
  • Ensure documentation of drug receipt errors includes a written error report signed by an observer or witness and the employee.
  • Accurately measure, record, and report residents’ vital signs.
  • Promptly notify the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or Director of Nursing Services of medication errors or resident reactions.
  • Follow the facility’s medication card practices.
  • Follow facility procedures for recording medication orders in residents’ clinical records, including medication type, route, dosage, frequency, and strength.
