About the job

Requirements
  • At least 10 years of progressive quality engineering or quality systems experience in a regulated hardware environment, such as medical devices, in vitro diagnostics, combination products, or similarly regulated consumer hardware.
  • Hands-on experience with ISO 13485 and/or 21 CFR 820 (or the FDA Quality Management System Regulation), including building or substantially maturing a quality management system from the ground up.
  • Experience reviewing and approving test plans, test reports, and verification and validation documentation for physical or electromechanical hardware products.
  • Practical experience running document control, corrective and preventive action, nonconformance, supplier quality, and internal audit programs.
  • Working knowledge of risk management per ISO 14971 or an equivalent standard.
  • Ability to operate independently and make final quality decisions, including release holds, with minimal oversight, and communicate those decisions clearly to executive stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, a physical science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Responsibilities
  • Own, maintain, and continuously improve PAX's quality management system, structured around ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 principles and scaled appropriately to each product line's regulatory status.
  • Define the quality policy, quality objectives, and quality management system scope, and ensure the system stays current as products, processes, and regulations evolve.
  • Lead management review meetings, reporting quality metrics, risks, and system performance to the CEO and executive team.
  • Determine which quality management system elements apply to consumer versus medical-market hardware product lines, and decide where to hold the line versus right-size process for a growing company.
  • Review and approve test plans and test reports for new product development and sustaining engineering changes, ensuring test methods, sample sizes, acceptance criteria, and statistical rationale are sound.
  • Own Quality's role in design controls, including design inputs and outputs, verification and validation planning, design reviews, and design history file content and completeness.
  • Partner with Engineering from concept through launch so quality and testability requirements are built in early rather than inspected in at the end.
  • Make independent go/no-go quality calls on design transfer and product release, backed by objective evidence.
  • Own the risk management process aligned to ISO 14971 principles, including hazard identification, risk analysis, risk controls, and residual risk evaluation for hardware and, where applicable, software.
  • Ensure risk files are maintained as living documents, updated throughout the product lifecycle and revisited following complaints, corrective and preventive actions, and design changes.
  • Implement and run a formal document control system for numbering, revision control, approval routing, distribution, and obsolescence of specifications, procedures, work instructions, and forms.
  • Own records retention and traceability for device history records, inspection records, training records, and audit trails so products and decisions can be reconstructed on demand.
  • Select, implement, and administer document control or electronic quality management system tooling as the company scales beyond manual processes.
  • Establish supplier quality requirements, qualification criteria, and ongoing performance monitoring, including incoming inspection, supplier audits, and scorecards, for contract manufacturers and component suppliers.
  • Own incoming inspection, in-process, and outgoing quality control specifications and sampling plans in partnership with Operations and contract manufacturers.
  • Drive supplier corrective action for quality escapes and manage first-article and production-readiness reviews for new suppliers or tooling.
  • Own the corrective and preventive action process end to end, including intake, root-cause analysis, effectiveness checks, and closure across manufacturing, field, and internal findings.
  • Run the nonconformance process for in-process and incoming material issues, including disposition decisions such as use-as-is, rework, or scrap.
  • Own product complaint handling and post-market surveillance data, identifying trends that warrant corrective and preventive action, design changes, or regulatory reporting.
  • Plan and execute the internal audit program against quality management system procedures and applicable standards, and track findings to closure.
  • Serve as the primary quality point of contact for external audits and regulatory inspections by notified bodies, certification bodies, and customers.
  • Partner with Regulatory Affairs on EU Medical Device Regulation technical documentation and quality-system evidence for medical-market cannabis devices, ensuring quality records and design controls satisfy requirements.
  • Build the quality function's roadmap, headcount plan, and budget as PAX's regulated product portfolio grows; hire and develop quality engineers and document control staff over time.
  • Act as a direct, independent voice on quality and risk in cross-functional and executive discussions, including rejecting launch dates when the evidence does not support them.
  • Train and coach Engineering, Operations, and Sales teams on quality-system expectations and their role in maintaining compliance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Direct experience with EU Medical Device Regulation technical documentation and/or notified body audits.
  • ASQ certification (CQE, CQM/OE, CMQ/OE) or ISO 13485 Lead Auditor certification.
  • Experience standing up or administering an electronic quality management system platform, such as MasterControl, Greenlight Guru, Qualio, or ETQ.
  • Experience in cannabis, vaporization, consumer electronics, or a comparably fast-moving hardware category that had to layer regulatory rigor onto an existing consumer product line.
  • Experience managing or mentoring a small quality team.

September 8, 2026 at 9:07 a.m. PAX FOUR, MINI and ERA GO arrive in a deep oxblood finish, bringing timeless style, seasonal color, and elevated design to three of the brand's signature devices SAN FRANCISCO - Today PAX, a pioneering global cannabis brand, introduces The Oxblood Edit, an ultra-limited release bringing one of fall's defining colors to three of the brand's signature devices: PAX FOUR, PAX MINI and ERA GO. Deep, distinctive and designed to be coveted, Oxblood transforms the PAX lineup through a rich burgundy finish inspired by the worlds of fashion, interiors and industrial design. The limited collection is available beginning today at pax.com and select retailers, while supplies last. Long associated with craftsmanship and enduring style, oxblood has reemerged across fashion, footwear, accessories and interiors as consumers gravitate toward richer palettes, timeless materials and elevated essentials. For PAX, the color is less about chasing a seasonal trend than expressing a nearly two-decade design philosophy that technology should perform beautifully, feel considered in every detail and be designed to live with you. "Great design has always been fundamental to PAX. Not simply how our products look, but how they feel, function and fit into people's lives," said Chris Ahern, CEO of PAX. "With The Oxblood Edit, we wanted to create something that feels both distinctly of-the-moment and connected to our enduring heritage. It takes an everyday object and makes it more personal, while still beautifully made, thoughtfully designed and worthy of the rituals that shape modern living." The collection brings Oxblood to PAX's newest and most powerful dry herb device, PAX FOUR, recently named the "best loose-leaf vaporizer on the market" by WIRED; the compact and approachable PAX MINI; and ERA GO, the sleek, pocket-sized battery for PAX ERA pods. PAX FOUR features high-output hybrid heating engineered to produce 50% more vapor and heat up faster than any previous PAX dry herb device. Four preset heat modes with patented temperature control allow consumers to tailor each session, from quick and high-impact to longer and more sustained. PAX MINI offers a simple introduction to dry herb vaporization through a compact design and single-button interface, while ERA GO pairs effortless portability with PAX's high-performance pod system. Across the portfolio, that focus on design is matched by a commitment to creating better ways to experience cannabis. Unlike smoking, PAX dry herb devices heat cannabis without burning it. Recent PAX research found that vaporizing cannabis reduced exposure to harmful combustion byproducts - including benzene, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde - by up to 99% compared with smoking a preroll. More information is available at pax.com/science. To celebrate The Oxblood Edit, PAX is bringing the collection to life through a series of cultural moments spanning fashion, art and design. During New York Fashion Week, PAX will partner with FANG NYC for its Fall 2026 runway show, bringing Oxblood into one of fashion's most influential weeks. On September 22, Oxblood will take over a Lower East Side gallery for one night only, bringing together a curated group of artists, makers and brands, each offering their own interpretation of the season's defining shade. The evening will feature art by Lee Smith, food by House of Flavor, a wine tasting with Amari Collins and a Leisure Golf & Skate pop-up - all drenched in the rich, provocative world of Oxblood, with more surprises to come. The Oxblood Edit is available beginning September 8, 2026, exclusively at pax.com and in select retailers. PAX devices are also available year-round in Onyx and Greenstone. PAX is a leading global cannabis brand redefining the role cannabis plays in modern life. Through thoughtful design, pioneering innovation and scientific rigor, PAX creates products that integrate seamlessly into life's most meaningful moments - helping consumers enjoy the plant with greater intention, presence and appreciation. PAX is committed to making a positive impact and is certified Plastic Negative across all product lines by rePurpose Global, removing twice as much plastic from nature as is used in PAX products.
