  • A Master's or Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, or another health science degree from an accredited college meeting Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments requirements for high-complexity laboratories, plus Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology or eligibility to obtain it within 12 months of hire.
  • An Associate degree as a Medical Lab Technician from a two-year accredited program, five years of relevant hospital or reference laboratory experience, and Health Education and Welfare/American Medical Technologist or approved agency certification for classification as a Medical Technologist.
  • A Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college, an Associate degree as a Medical Lab Technician from a two-year accredited program, and Medical Laboratory Scientist certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology upon appointment.
  • Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology or the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel within 12 months of hire.
  • Medical Lab Technician possession of Health Education and Welfare/American Medical Technologist or approved agency certification for classification as a Medical Technologist.
  • Medical Lab Technician with Medical Laboratory Scientist certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Responsibilities
  • Collect blood samples using proper techniques for infant, pediatric, adult, geriatric, and impaired patients.
  • Verify patient identification and maintain specimen identification according to standard operating procedures.
  • Process all specimens collected and received in the laboratory accurately and completely.
  • Prepare paperwork and specimens for testing routed to reference laboratories.
  • Document discrepancies and alert the laboratory director using appropriate tools.
  • Document comments and complaints and alert the laboratory director.
  • Assess the developmental needs of patients from infant to geriatric and adjust care and instructions appropriately.
  • Use appropriate communication and customer-relations skills while delivering laboratory services to inpatients, outpatients, nursing home residents, physician offices, home care agencies, veterinary offices, and other customers.
  • Perform laboratory procedures on human and veterinary specimens in Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Hematology, Immunohematology, Microbiology, and Serology using manual, microscopic, and automated instrumentation.
  • Perform testing according to approved procedures, including instrument startup, quality control, and record keeping.
  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly maintenance on instrumentation according to established protocols.
  • Lead a laboratory department and perform assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintain required continuing education for Medical Technologists.
  • Implement troubleshooting and repair processes for quality-control and instrument failures.
  • Recognize questionable instrument function or patient data and resolve problems before reporting patient results.
  • Prepare and distribute laboratory reports to appropriate sites.
  • Assist in reviewing, revising, and writing policies and procedures.
  • Participate in or lead departmental and organizational performance-improvement activities.
  • Maintain a clean and neat working environment.
  • Assist with training new employees and new procedures.
  • Participate in assigned or self-initiated special projects.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
