FAA awards contract for new Air Traffic control tower at Sacramento International Airport.

FAA awards contract for new Air Traffic control tower at Sacramento International Airport. Sep 29, 2026 | News Sacramento, CA - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded a design-build contract to Walsh Federal LLC for a new air traffic control tower at Sacramento International Airport (SMF), marking a major milestone in the long-planned replacement of the Airport's existing tower, which has been in service since 1967. The contract was awarded September 19, 2026, with work scheduled through early 2030. The new tower is expected to become fully operational around 2030. "This contract award is a significant step forward for the long-term safety, efficiency and resilience of our airspace operations at Sacramento International Airport," said Harry Barrett Jr., Assistant Director of Airports for Sacramento County. "We have been ready for this investment for many years, and we are excited to see the project move from planning toward construction." The FAA previously identified SMF as a priority site for tower replacement in 2016. SMF is one of eight airports nationwide selected for new tower construction as part of a broader FAA initiative to modernize aging air traffic infrastructure. The program is supported in part by funding from the $5 billion allocated to the FAA Air Traffic Organization through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The current SMF control tower presents operational and accessibility limitations as well as challenges associated with aging facility systems. The replacement tower will be located on the Airport's north campus and will provide improved sightlines and a modernized working environment designed to better support FAA air traffic controllers. The new location will also enhance security by relocating critical operations away from public-facing airport areas. The FAA contract with Walsh Federal covers design and construction of the replacement tower, with a period of performance extending through February 2030. Construction is currently expected to begin in summer 2027. The new tower will remain FAA-owned and FAA-operated upon completion.

Historical excavation begins in Hudson River tunnel.

Historical excavation begins in Hudson River tunnel. The Gateway Development Commission (GDC) has officially inked a staggering $1.3 billion contract for the excavation of a groundbreaking tunnel beneath the Hudson River. This historic project aims to revolutionize regional rail connectivity, promising to shatter previous capacity limitations and streamline transit between New York City and New Jersey. Here's a detailed breakdown of what this entails and how it will reshape transportation infrastructure. Transportation efficiency tools The significance of the Package 1C contract. The awarded contract, known as Package 1C, represents a critical phase in the larger Hudson Tunnel project. Executed by a joint venture forming Traylor Bros. Inc., Walsh Group, and Skanska AB, this phase involves some of the most complex excavation and tunneling work to date in the region. With this contract in place, the project moves from planning to active construction, signaling a major leap forward. The focus of Package 1C is on excavating nearly 4.4 km of twin tunnels, which will provide two dedicated tunnels for passenger trains, drastically reducing congestion and increasing reliability. Innovative tunneling techniques and engineering marvels. This project employs state-of-the-art tunnel boring machines (TBMs), designed specifically for urban infrastructure challenges beneath active city environments. The TBMs will commence work from Weehawken, New Jersey, and extend underneath the river to Manhattan, marking one of the most ambitious tunneling efforts in recent history. * Two tunnel boring machines will operate simultaneously, enhancing efficiency. * The tunneling process is carefully monitored through extensive sensor networks to ensure safety and precision. Push for a Donald Trump visit in September amid logistical nightmare.

Push for a Donald Trump visit in September amid logistical nightmare. 21/03/2026 US Ambassador to Ireland Ed Walsh is pushing for President Donald Trump to turn the sod on the new American embassy in Dublin in September. A visit to the capital by Mr Trump would create a logistical nightmare for the Government, with major road closures and shutdowns required to deal with expected protests. Today's top videos STORY CONTINUES BELOW The US president indicated this week, during Taoiseach Micheál Martin's visit to the Oval Office, that he is 'going to try' to visit Ireland in September. Mr Trump's golf resort in Doonbeg, Co. Clare, will host the Irish Open from September 10-13. Extra.ie understands that the trip is logistically tricky and will be 'very short' if it goes ahead, with Mr Trump flying into Shannon Airport on Air Force One and flying on Marine One to other locations. Mr Trump will have to be in the US for the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre on September 11. Extra.ie understands that Mr Walsh, a personal friend of the president, is pushing to have Mr Trump come to Dublin to officially break ground on the new embassy in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. The pair, former golfing buddies, both have construction and real estate backgrounds. Prior to his appointment Mr Walsh was president of the Walsh Construction company, which he founded in 2003 in his home State of New Jersey. Mr Trump has a string of hotels, offices and golf resorts around the world. Mr Walsh has also been a member of the Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey. Since his appointment in June last year, Mr Walsh has placed a portrait of Mr Trump in the lobby of his Deerfield Residence in the Phoenix Park. The pair held a meeting on board Air Force One at Shannon Airport in January while the plane was refuelling on its return journey from the World Economic Forum in Davos. The US embassy will move from its current location at Elgin Road in Ballsbridge to the site of the former Jury's Hotel across the road. In 2024, the US embassy acquired the 4.2-acre site and is reported to be spending €641 million on the purchase, design, build and furnishing of the new embassy. According to the Associated Press, the US State Department's bureau of overseas building operations notified the US Congress that the cost of purchasing the former hotel amounted to €148 million. Formal discussions have not yet taken place about Mr Trump visiting multiple locations. While Mr Trump could visit the capital in an unofficial capacity, protocol would dictate that he meet with President Catherine Connolly at Áras an Uachtaráin. The five main takeaways from Micheál Martin's White House trip Earlier this month, President Connolly referred to the current war in the Middle East, instigated by the US and Israel on Iran, as 'deliberate assaults on international law'. During the Oval Office meeting on Tuesday, Mr Trump indicated that he did not know the Irish president was a woman when a member of the Irish press asked him about her comments. 'He's lucky I exist,' Mr Trump said. The Irish Government would have to decide whether to turn the trip into an official State visit, which would open the possibility for Mr Trump to address the Oireachtas. The White House did not reply to a request for comment about Mr Trump's travel plans last night.
