  • 5+ years of direct, accountable ownership of payroll administration across multiple jurisdictions, including California.
  • Experience standing up or substantially building people operations processes for a new entity, location, or country.
  • Hands-on experience administering benefits, including coordinating at least one open enrollment cycle.
  • Experience owning an HRIS, including configuration, integrations, data integrity, data governance, and reporting.
  • Experience developing complete, compliant policy suites across multiple states or countries, including knowing when to engage legal counsel.
  • Strong documentation and process-building skills, with examples of playbooks, controls, or operational systems created.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled tools for documentation, reporting, and workflow automation.
Responsibilities
  • Manage US and UK payroll end to end, including timesheets, payroll changes, initial review, accuracy, input validation, independent pre-run review by another People Ops team member, pre- and post-run reconciliation, change approvals, audit trails, process documentation, and provider issue resolution.
  • Own benefits administration, COBRA, open enrollment, US 401(k) and UK pension administration, including contributions, records, and provider coordination.
  • Manage leave administration in the HRIS and workers' compensation, partnering with the Sr. HRBP when accommodations or employee-specific issues arise.
  • Own HRIS architecture, configuration, integrations, data integrity, governance, and reporting, including source-of-truth rules, field ownership, and auditing.
  • Troubleshoot escalated people-systems issues, manage vendor relationships and platform performance, and recommend whether to build, buy, change, or simplify systems, with costs and risks clearly laid out.
  • Partner with the Head of People to write and maintain compliant policies across US federal and state jurisdictions, the UK, and EOR-covered countries, including a jurisdictional compliance matrix, version control, and review dates.
  • Own the people compliance calendar for filings, renewals, notices, audits, and policy reviews, with clear owners and lead times; involve outside counsel when needed.
  • Facilitate FRO introductions to immigration counsel, coordinate vendors, track timelines, and provide HRIS documentation; do not manage substantive immigration cases.
  • Support reporting for compensation reviews.
  • Stand up people infrastructure for each new FRO, including entity and EOR setup, payroll and benefits activation, policies, and a usable Notion workspace.
  • Coordinate the people workstream within the broader plan owned by the Program Launch Manager, manage dependencies such as TriNet and Rippling onboarding timelines, and flag risks early.
  • Own the operational side of FRO wind-downs, including individual terminations, jurisdiction-specific final pay, benefits termination, platform and entity closure mechanics, and records retention.
  • Partner with the Sr. HRBP on transition planning and employee communications, and with the Head of People on severance and counsel-involved matters.
  • Take full ownership of US and UK payroll and pension/401(k) administration, documenting processes sufficiently for others to run them safely.
  • Audit and update source-of-truth salary data.
  • Create a process for managing timecards and hourly payroll in Rippling.
  • Build a 12-month roadmap with OKRs and success criteria, agree it with the Head of People, and complete 2–3 high-priority initiatives.
  • Design and implement a payroll controls framework and people compliance calendar with clear ownership, review processes, and accountability.
  • Complete a jurisdictional policy gap assessment and close the highest-risk gaps.
  • Support at least one new FRO launch and one FRO wind-down from start to finish on the people operations side, assuming project timelines permit.
Desired Qualifications
  • UK payroll experience, including PAYE, RTI, and pension administration.
  • Experience working in a PEO environment, ideally with TriNet, and with Rippling or a comparable international payroll platform.
  • Experience with international employer-of-record arrangements.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, startup, research organization, or other fast-moving, mission-driven environment.
  • Experience supporting multiple legal entities.

About the company

Convergent Research acts as a non-profit incubator that identifies high-impact scientific or technological fields and launches focused research organizations (FROs) to work on large-scale, coordinated, non-profit projects. It brings together scientific founders and funders to design, launch, and operate these FROs, attracting top talent from academia, industry, and startups. Its products include FROs such as E11 Bio, which develops tools to map brain circuitry, and the Gap Map, a web portal that helps identify gaps in the research landscape. Unlike typical for-profit startups or grant-making programs, Convergent Research fills a structural gap by coordinating philanthropy and research to accelerate progress in critical areas. The company aims to accelerate scientific and technological progress for society by funding, organizing, and operating ambitious, high-impact research programs through its FRO model.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Wellcome funded Cultivarium with $10 million in April 2025 for fungi and archaea.
  • Cultivarium's 2026 hiring spans assay, cell-free, and hardware roles, signaling active expansion.
  • Its open-source tools and protocols can become infrastructure for biotech and academic labs.

What critics are saying

  • Non-model organism tooling is slow; 2025-2028 milestones depend on hard biology breakthroughs.
  • Wellcome's three-year grant ends before commercialization, forcing renewed fundraising by 2028.
  • If adoption stalls, Cultivarium becomes grant-dependent infrastructure with no durable moat.

What makes Cultivarium unique

  • Cultivarium builds tools for non-model organisms, targeting biology most labs cannot touch.
  • Its scope spans bacteria, archaea, fungi, plants, and animals, not one niche.
  • A London lab opens in Fall 2026, extending its platform beyond Watertown.

ARIA awards $26.7M to launch two UK research organisations tackling brain mapping and ecological intelligence

Convergent Research and the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency have launched two new Focused Research Organisations: Meridial and Echo Labs. Both emerged from Convergent's UK FRO Founder Residency programme, marking the organisation's first major expansion outside the US. Meridial received £14 million from ARIA to build a microscopy platform for mapping synaptic connections in living animals over time. The infrastructure aims to help researchers observe how brain connectivity changes across development, disease and learning. Echo Labs secured £7 million to develop infrastructure for measuring and forecasting ecosystem conditions. The organisation will work to represent natural systems in ways that can be modelled and compared continuously. Both organisations operate as non-profit, startup-like entities designed to tackle specific scientific bottlenecks by creating shared tools and infrastructure over fixed timeframes.

Convergent Research Announces Major New Funding Commitment To Forest Neurotech

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Convergent Research today announced a new $14 million funding commitment from former Google CEO Eric Schmidt to Forest Neurotech, an initiative designed to create next-generation brain-computer-interfaces (BCIs) for individuals with neurological injuries or diseases. In addition to support from Eric Schmidt, Forest Neurotech has received funding from Griffin Catalyst, the philanthropic organization of Citadel CEO Kenneth C. Griffin, the Riley Susan Bechtel Foundation, and James Fickel. Forest Neurotech is developing a novel ultrasound-based BCI that can sense and modulate the whole brain without penetrating it. Most BCIs rely on invasive procedures that access a limited region of the brain while damaging brain tissue and causing harmful biological responses. Forest’s ultrasound technology reaches deep into the brain, providing researchers with a minimally invasive platform to develop diagnostics, monitoring, and therapeutics across the whole brain

Ben Reinhardt Is On A Mission To Make Sci-Fi A Reality

A Science Fiction future inspired by Ada Palmer’s Terra Ignota Series Jocelynn PearlWhen Ben Reinhardt was an undergrad at Caltech, he often passed a mural painted on the back of a building on campus. It included a quote from Theodore von Kármán, a scientist and engineer who served as the first director of JPL: "Scientists study the world as it is, engineers create the world that never has been." Since his days as an undergrad, Reinhardt’s been trying to build the world as it could be, one filled with the imaginings of science fiction novels like Ada Palmer’s Terra LUNA3 Ignota Series. But a recent paper published in Nature described a decline in scientific progress over the last few decades. It’s a trend that many have been speaking out about for years, among them Reinhardt and a cohort of individuals who study ‘the science of science’, which some have coined metascience.Papers and patents are using narrower portions of existing knowledge. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05543-x/figures/6Reinhardt went on to get his PhD with a particular desire: to build spaceships. But he found that academia wasn’t quite the right venue for making progress, so he joined a startup working on augmented reality. That wasn’t quite right either
