What believers are saying

  • Dollar Tree repurchased $605 million of stock and still has $2.5 billion authorized.
  • Rite Aid closures keep opening sites like Bristol and Highlands Ranch for cheap expansion.

What critics are saying

  • Profitability leaned on $369 million tariff refunds; that windfall fades after 2026.
  • Fuel and freight surcharges already pressured fourth-quarter margin, per Stuart Glendinning.
  • Walmart and Dollar General attack essentials, while Dollar Tree's discretionary mix stays vulnerable.

What makes Dollar Tree unique

  • Dollar Tree spans 9,436 stores, pairing extreme-value trips with multi-price expansion.
  • August 27, 2026 results showed 3.7% same-store sales growth and 6,600 multi-price stores.
  • Its footprint wins mission-driven, seasonal, and family shopping that Dollar General underserves.

Dollar General and Dollar Tree see sales jump as inflation worries drive shoppers to discount stores

Dollar General and Dollar Tree reported strong second-quarter results as economic pressures drive shoppers to discount retailers. Dollar General's net sales rose 5.2% year-over-year to $11.3 billion, with same-store sales up 3.5%. Dollar Tree saw total sales grow 7% to $4.9 billion, with same-store sales increasing 3.7%. Consumer sentiment has fallen 6% from last month and 11% from a year ago, according to the University of Michigan. Lower- and middle-income consumers showed the steepest declines. Both chains are attracting value-seeking shoppers, with Dollar General drawing more middle- and higher-income customers. Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos noted this marks the fifth consecutive quarter of customer traffic growth, with the chain positioned within 5 miles of 75% of the US population.

Dollar Tree raises earnings outlook despite fuel costs creating 'very meaningful' freight headwind

Dollar Tree reported second-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.39 per share, excluding a $1.31 benefit from tariff refunds, beating the $1.14 consensus estimate. Sales rose 7% year-over-year to $4.89 billion, slightly above expectations. The company's stock fell Thursday as Chief Financial Officer Stuart Glendinning warned that elevated fuel prices are creating a "very, very meaningful" increase in freight surcharges. This pressure is expected to contribute to a decline in fourth-quarter gross margin. Dollar Tree raised its full-year adjusted earnings outlook to $7.70 to $8.05 per share, up from $6.70 to $7.10, topping the $7.04 consensus. The company maintained its annual sales forecast of $20.5 billion to $20.7 billion. During the quarter, Dollar Tree returned $605 million to shareholders through share repurchases.
