Rivian designs and builds electric pickup trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, pairing off-road ability with electronics and software it develops itself. In 2021, its R1T became the first fully electric pickup truck on the US consumer market, ahead of larger rivals such as Ford and Tesla. It makes the R1T pickup, the R1S and R2 SUVs, and commercial vans in Normal, Illinois, and sells them directly online and in its own stores rather than through dealers. Its vehicles run on Rivian's own software, which gains features through updates sent over the internet, and most revenue comes from vehicle sales, with service and optional software adding more. Rivian was founded in 2009 and is based in Irvine, California.

Rivian Automotive's most valuable bet may be robotics, not vehicles. In 2025, chief executive officer RJ Scaringe founded Mind Robotics, an AI-enabled company that builds robots. Rivian owns about a third of it, and Mind is Rivian's primary manufacturing partner. This week, Mind hired Doug Field as president. He previously ran Tesla's Model 3 program and Ford Motor Company's EV operations. Rivian's stake is reportedly worth a little more than $1 billion. Mind reported raising $1 billion in the past year. Rivian launched its more affordable R2 fleet this year and delivered a record 19,248 vehicles in the third fiscal quarter. Its shares are down 34% this year.
Rivian AI agents are coming to its EVs ahead of December AI and Autonomy Day. Tl;dr. * Rivian is preparing to bring conversational AI agents directly into its R1 and R2 vehicles, moving beyond basic voice commands to proactive, context-aware in-car intelligence. * The rollout will be powered by Rivian's in-house autonomy compute and software stack, with deeper integration expected to be detailed at its AI & Autonomy Day event this December. * The push positions Rivian to compete with Tesla, Google, and Chinese EV rivals in the race to make the car an AI companion, not just transportation. Rivian's bigger bet: your car becomes a companion. Rivian has never hidden its ambition to be more than an electric truck company. It wants to be a software company that happens to make adventure-ready EVs. Now that vision is getting its biggest test yet: AI agents living inside Rivian vehicles. According to recent teasers from CEO RJ Scaringe and the company's autonomy leadership, Rivian is developing a new generation of in-car intelligence that goes far beyond "set navigation to Denver" or "open the frunk." Think of an agent that knows your daily commute, your charging habits, your camping setup, and your calendar - and acts on it before you ask. Instead of a voice assistant you have to summon, Rivian wants an agent that's always contextually present: rerouting you around a storm on a road trip to Moab, pre-conditioning the battery for a faster charging stop, booking service when it detects an issue, or summarizing your messages while you're driving hands-free. Why now: software-defined vehicles meet generative AI. The timing is no accident. Rivian just completed its critical transition to its zonal electrical architecture and second-generation R1 platform, plus its new in-house Rivian Autonomy Platform with onboard LiDAR, radar, cameras, and a powerful custom compute module. That hardware unlocks two things: real on-device inference for low-latency AI, and a unified software stack across R1T, R1S, and the upcoming affordable R2. At the same time, the broader auto industry is racing in the same direction. Tesla is pushing Grok integration and robotaxi ambitions, Mercedes and BMW are embedding large language models from Google, Microsoft and Amazon, and Google's Android Automotive with Gemini is becoming the default intelligence layer for many brands. Rivian, notably, has resisted going all-in on Google or Apple for the cabin. It still doesn't offer CarPlay, betting instead that a tightly integrated, Rivian-owned experience will be better long-term. AI agents are the ultimate proof point for that controversial strategy - if it works, Rivian controls the relationship with the driver. If it fails, customers may wonder why they can't just use their phone. What to Expect from Rivian's in-car AI agents. While Rivian hasn't released a full spec sheet yet, job postings, developer briefings, and executive comments point to three layers: 1. A Conversational Vehicle Assistant: A natural-language interface that can control nearly every vehicle function - suspension height, drive modes, climate zones, tonneau cover, lighting scenes, camp mode - plus answer general knowledge questions, plan trips, and manage media. Expect wake-word-free interaction and multi-turn memory, so you can say "find a kid-friendly charger with coffee near our route and add 20 minutes to stretch." 2. Proactive Driving and Ownership Agents: This is where it gets interesting. Rivian is reportedly testing agents that monitor range, weather, traffic, home energy via its charging ecosystem, and maintenance health. For example: predicting you won't make it home on current charge and automatically reserving a Rivian Adventure Network stall, or noticing repeated off-road routes and suggesting tire pressure and drive mode changes. 3. Autonomy-Linked Intelligence: Rivian's Level 2+ system, Rivian Autonomy Platform+, already handles highway hands-free driving with driver monitoring. The company has promised eyes-off, hands-free point-to-point capability over time. AI agents will likely serve as the narrator and co-pilot for that system - explaining why the car changed lanes, took an exit, or slowed, and taking voice overrides like "pass this trailer when it's clear." All of this will run on Rivian's custom software with cloud support from major AI model providers, while keeping safety-critical driving decisions on-board. What December's AI & Autonomy Day could reveal. All eyes are now on Rivian's AI & Autonomy Day event in December. The company has used past events to unveil major platform shifts, and this one is expected to be software-first. Here's what to watch for: Live Demo of the In-Car Agent: Expect Scaringe or Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid to demo a live conversation with a Rivian vehicle on stage, showing trip planning, vehicle controls, and memory across drives. Autonomy Roadmap Update: Rivian has promised to expand hands-free driving from highways to more scenarios in 2026 and launch its own robotaxi pilot. December should bring timelines, SAE Level progress, LiDAR data, and safety metrics. R2 AI Strategy: With the $45,000 R2 SUV launching as Rivian's mass-market bet, AI features could be a key differentiator. Will agents be standard, subscription-based via Connect+, or tiered by compute? Developer Platform and Third-Party Agents: One big question is whether Rivian will open APIs for Spotify, DoorDash, Airbnb, and home automation to build agents on top of Rivian's platform - turning the car into an app ecosystem. Pricing and Rollout Timeline: The most practical detail: when do current R1 owners get it via over-the-air update, and will it require new hardware or the Connect+ subscription? The stakes for Rivian. For Rivian, AI agents aren't a gimmick - they're survival strategy. The company is in a brutal transition period: scaling R2 production in Normal, Illinois, fulfilling its Volkswagen joint venture valued at up to $5.8 billion, and trying to reach positive gross profit while competing with Tesla's price cuts. Software and autonomy offer something hardware can't: high-margin recurring revenue and brand lock-in. If Rivian can deliver AI that genuinely makes owning, driving, and adventuring easier, it justifies its walled-garden approach and gives R2 buyers a reason to choose Rivian over a Model Y. The risk is equally clear. Generative AI in cars raises hard questions about distraction, hallucination, privacy, and latency. Drivers won't tolerate an agent that gets charging math wrong or misinterprets a command at 70 mph. Rivian will need to prove its system is automotive-grade, not a chatbot bolted to a steering wheel. Bottom line: December won't just be a tech showcase. It will be Rivian's pitch for what the next decade of driving feels like - less about horsepower and range, and more about intelligence riding shotgun with you. Rivian opens invite-only access to self-driving features. Marcus Lewinsky Thu, October 15, 2026 at 4:09 PM PDT Rivian will open its Autonomy Early Access Program to a limited group of owners in December, giving selected participants pre-release access to Point to Point, a supervised Level 2 driver assistance system that combines hands-free driving with turn-by-turn navigation, the company announced. The invite-only program targets Gen 2 R1 and R2 owners based in California and Florida with active paid Autonomy+ subscriptions. Trials do not count toward eligibility. Owners can enroll through their Rivian.com account, where a qualifying vehicle surfaces an Autonomy Early Access tile on the primary owner's profile. According to Rivian, selection depends on how frequently an owner engages Autonomy features and whether they maintain a clean recent safety record covering metrics such as forward collision warnings. The company weighs the pool across regions and vehicle models. Owners who are not chosen will not receive a rejection email, and their interest stays on record as the program reaches additional states, making reapplication unnecessary. Participation carries obligations. Testers must engage the features on a weekly basis, log issues through the vehicle interface, and submit a monthly survey. They must also share location and camera data under an NDA. There is no compensation. Rivian reassesses eligibility on a 30-day cycle and can drop any participant without notice. Point to Point ties Universal Hands-Free to navigation, letting the vehicle follow a navigation route through supervised turns, highway merges, and surface-street driving. The system relies on a 360-degree sensor suite and Rivian's Large Driving Model. Drivers must stay attentive throughout. The timing lines up a statement made by James Philbin, SVP, Autonomy & AI at Rivian when he said that the company was tracking toward a year-end launch. A broad rollout reaching all Autonomy+ subscribers remains targeted for 2027, according to Rivian. Because testers are bound by an NDA, early participants will not be discussing the system publicly. Rivian's Autonomy & AI Day on December 9 is set to offer a public look at the technology ahead of the wider release.
Rivian debuts Autonomy Early Access Program, looks like its own take on the Tesla FSD Beta. Rivian announced the Autonomy Early Access Program for owners in California and Florida who wish to test future Autonomy+ features before everyone else Published: 15 Oct 2026, 17:34 UTC - By: Photo: Rivian Rivian is following in Tesla's footsteps with an early access program to test future Autonomy+ features before they are released to the rest of the fleet. The Autonomy Early Access Program will open in December to all owners with an active Autonomy+ subscription who apply. Access is restricted to a limited group, currently only in California and Florida. Rivian prepares to debut more advanced features for its Autonomy+ driver assist system, which is currently offered exclusively on Gen-2 R1 vehicles and on the R2. The most exciting among them is Point-to-Point, which should close the gap with Tesla FSD. Point-to-Point builds on the Universal Hands-Free capability and integrates it directly into the route navigation. With Point-to-Point, the vehicle will follow the active turn-by-turn directions in the navigation regardless of the road type. This should take you safely from the driveway to your destination, under your supervision, of course. Many have been skeptical of Rivian's ability to develop in-house autonomous driving capabilities. Still, the EV startup is confident it could start rolling out Point-to-Point by the end of the year. The moment is crucial, as the company has a reputation for sticking to announced timelines. Well, except replacing the broken tonneau covers on early R1T vehicles, maybe. That's not to say that Point-to-Point will be ready for prime time by then. Much like its bigger brother Tesla, Rivian will first start a beta-testing program, similar to Tesla FSD Beta. This would allow the carmaker to test future autonomous driving features in real-world conditions before they are deemed safe for a wider rollout to the Rivian fleet. That's the role of the "Autonomy Early Access Program," which will begin testing new Point-to-Point features in December. Regular Autonomy+ subscribers will get Point-to-Point at a later date, hopefully early next year. That would be an impressive feat for Rivian, which doesn't have its own data centers as Tesla does. The Autonomy Early Access Program is currently open only to Rivian owners with an Autonomy+ subscription in California and Florida. This means Gen2 R1S and R1T owners, as well as R2 owners. The program will be expanded in 2027, but Canadian owners would not be eligible. Rivian expects the Autonomy Early Access Program to enroll a very limited number of Rivian owners. They will be evaluated on a monthly basis based on their driving behavior, and Rivian warns that their membership can be revoked at any time. Interested owners will have to express interest in enrolling in the program through their Rivian account, even if it's not yet available in their region. Thus, they will not need to reapply if the program expands. The carmaker will favor eligible owners with high Autonomy feature usage and a clean recent safety record. The Autonomy Early Access Program is expected to kick off during Rivian's second Autonomy & AI Day, which is scheduled for December 9 in San Francisco. The event should also provide the first real-world demonstration of Rivian's autonomous driving capabilities. Liked the article? Here are the key news stories impacting Rivian Automotive this week: * Rivian expanded its battery-lifecycle agreement with Redwood Materials. Redwood will collect retired battery packs from Rivian's U.S. service network, supporting recycling, materials recovery and potential cost and sustainability benefits. * Rivian is adding artificial-intelligence features to its vehicles, including a voice-based assistant, while CEO RJ Scaringe said the company may eventually support third-party AI agents from firms such as Anthropic. The initiative could strengthen Rivian's software differentiation, although it is not yet a material revenue driver. * The lower-priced R2 SUV is the key bullish story for investors. Rivian is ramping production at its Illinois plant, and the model's affordability, Tesla Supercharger access and software features could broaden demand and improve scale if the launch succeeds. * Some commentary argues RIVN could be undervalued based on reaffirmed 2026 guidance, while other coverage highlights record deliveries and the accessible-model rollout. These views depend heavily on Rivian meeting production, delivery and cash-flow targets. * The Redwood announcement did not prevent shares from declining in recent trading, suggesting investors may view the recycling agreement as strategically positive but insufficient to offset near-term concerns. * Rivian was on track for a seventh consecutive losing session, reflecting continued weak momentum. With a negative earnings history and analysts expecting another full-year loss, investors remain sensitive to execution and funding risks. * Higher inflation, including a 0.6% monthly rise in September's consumer-price index, could pressure household budgets and financing costs, potentially limiting demand for expensive electric vehicles.
