Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 7 years of experience designing, integrating, and testing optical, imaging, photonic, infrared, or laser-based hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience taking an optical or optomechanical assembly from concept through environmental qualification.
  • Strong understanding of geometric and wave optics, optical aberrations, radiometry, tolerance analysis, and optical performance budgeting.
  • Proficiency with Zemax, CODE V, or equivalent optical design and modeling software.
  • Hands-on experience with optical alignment, calibration, and metrology, including interferometry, modulation transfer function, boresight, transmission, or stray-light testing.
  • Experience with optomechanical packaging, precision mounting, athermalization, detector integration, and manufacturing tolerance flow-down.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, C++, or a similar language for optical modeling, test automation, and data analysis.
  • Eligibility to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations under ITAR regulations.
Responsibilities
  • Own optical and optomechanical systems from requirements and architecture through detailed design, integration, qualification, and production.
  • Design and analyze imaging, sensing, laser, infrared, or free-space optical systems using first-principles optical engineering.
  • Develop optical prescriptions, performance models, error budgets, tolerance analyses, stray-light assessments, and system-level trade studies.
  • Design and integrate lenses, detectors, mounts, baffles, windows, thermal interfaces, alignment features, and other precision optical hardware.
  • Develop alignment, calibration, metrology, and automated test methods to characterize optical performance.
  • Plan and execute environmental qualification, including vibration, shock, thermal-vacuum, and other mission-specific testing.
  • Analyze test data, diagnose optical performance issues, lead anomaly investigations, and implement corrective design actions.
  • Partner with mechanical, electrical, software, systems, manufacturing, and supplier teams to deliver manufacturable, flight-ready hardware.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience developing optical systems for spacecraft, satellites, defense platforms, airborne systems, or other high-reliability applications.
  • Experience with infrared systems, free-space optics, laser communications, imaging payloads, star trackers, or pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems.
  • Experience with optical coatings, windows, detectors, focal-plane arrays, thermal interfaces, or stray-light analysis.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks, NX, Creo, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and the design of precision optomechanical assemblies.
  • Experience qualifying optical suppliers and transitioning optical hardware from prototype development into repeatable production.
  • Experience developing hardware for high-vibration, shock, thermal-vacuum, radiation, or other demanding aerospace environments.
  • Experience integrating optical systems into modeling and simulation environments in support of Hardware-in-the-Loop testing.

Space Kinetic develops in-space deployment systems for national security space operations, focusing on missile defense and space superiority. Its Longbow and Whirlwind platforms are propellant-free electromechanical devices embedded in a host satellite that accelerate and release payloads or micro-satellites to new trajectories without using fuel. This enables a single satellite to perform a “one-to-many” deployment with low signatures, reducing fuel use and enabling rapid, on-demand small-satellite missions, backed by DARPA, the US Space Force, and NSF contracts. The goal is to make space maneuverability affordable and readily available, expanding host-satellite capabilities for national security and commercial space activities.

Space Kinetic received a $50 million OTA award from the Space Force to develop Whirlwind, a system that flings microsatellites from a host spacecraft using centrifugal acceleration rather than thrusters. The company, which raised a $12 million seed round in 2025, describes the approach as applying drone economics to orbit: cheap, attritable payloads with useful lives potentially as short as 30 minutes. The concept decouples maneuvering from the payload itself. Whirlwind provides the initial delta-v electromechanically, then the microsatellites use their own propulsion and comms for the mission. The system is designed to be both regime- and payload-agnostic, fitting the Space Force's push toward distributed, responsive architectures. Astranis, known for its microGEO broadband satellites, unveiled Perceptor, a spacecraft built on the same platform but fitted with sensors for inspecting other satellites in geostationary orbit. The vehicle uses electric propulsion to reposition across the GEO belt and can conduct flybys, with multiple units working together to observe targets from different angles. GEO surveillance is a growing Space Force priority as China fields maneuvering spacecraft near U.S. communications and missile-warning satellites. Astranis was among 14 companies selected in April for the Andromeda contract vehicle supporting the RG-XX next-generation GEO surveillance constellation. Space Kinetic awarded $50M to develop spacecraft 'slingshot' system

Space Kinetic secured a $50M contract from the Space Force to develop Whirlwind, its space maneuverability and deployment system. This marks the largest award for the company, which raised $12M in seed funding in 2025. Whirlwind uses centrifugal acceleration to fling small microsatellites from a host spacecraft at high velocities without firing thrusters. The system provides the initial propulsion electromechanically, whilst the microsatellites carry their own propulsion and communications. The technology aims to bring drone-like economics to orbit by decoupling payloads from space vehicles, making missions cheaper and more responsive. Potential applications include sensor payloads, science probes, communications nodes, and debris characterisation. Space Kinetic previously received a multimillion-dollar DARPA contract in November. The company now employs 50 people across El Segundo and New Mexico facilities, including partnerships with Los Alamos National Laboratory.
