About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of progressive experience in data architecture, data engineering, or enterprise data management, with demonstrated ownership of a complex, multi-source data environment.
  • Hands-on proficiency with modern cloud data platforms, with Microsoft Azure and Synapse Analytics strongly preferred, and ability to reason about data models, schemas, and integration patterns at an architectural level.
  • Experience with BI platforms and their underlying data layers; Qlik Sense QVD architecture and data modeling experience are strongly preferred.
  • Direct experience developing or implementing AI/ML strategy in an organizational context, including evaluating vendors, writing governance frameworks, or leading pilots.
  • Demonstrated understanding of AI limitations, failure modes, and bias risks, particularly where underlying data is incomplete or clinically sensitive.
  • Experience with data governance frameworks, including data classification, stewardship models, access controls, and translating governance policy into architectural practice.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce a technical architecture document and a leadership-facing strategy memo in the same week.
  • Must live within a reasonable daily commuting distance to the MAHEC IT Business Offices in Asheville, North Carolina by or before the first day of work.
  • Must regularly attend on-site, work 40 hours per week, and flex hours as needed; occasional weekend, holiday, or evening coverage is required.
  • Must provide valid, original I-9 documents on the first day and be independently eligible to work in the United States; employment-based U.S. visa sponsorship is not provided.
  • All employees and learners must receive the flu vaccine or have an approved exemption.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 25–35 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Own the design, documentation, and continuous improvement of MAHEC's enterprise data architecture, including the Microsoft Synapse data warehouse, integration patterns, and data lineage across clinical, operational, and financial source systems.
  • Establish and enforce data standards, naming conventions, and schema governance to ensure enterprise data is consistent, auditable, and AI-ready.
  • Lead data quality assessment and remediation, and develop monitoring systems that surface structural issues before they propagate into analytics outputs or AI model inputs.
  • Manage and govern external data partnerships and integrations, including population health partnerships, ensuring inbound and outbound data is documented, validated, integrated, and tracked for provenance.
  • Author MAHEC's data architecture documentation, including entity relationship diagrams, data dictionaries, integration maps, and lineage documentation.
  • Develop and maintain MAHEC's organizational AI strategy, including a phased adoption roadmap calibrated to data maturity, operational context, and mission commitments.
  • Establish an AI governance framework including vendor evaluation criteria, risk assessment protocols, acceptable use policies, and ongoing monitoring standards appropriate to a federally qualified health center.
  • Lead evaluation and piloting of AI tools across clinical and administrative contexts, with attention to bias, fidelity, and patient safety; ensure product evaluations review and negotiate data use agreements, business associate agreements, and data residency and retention terms before organizational commitment.
  • Serve as MAHEC's primary liaison to AI vendors and technology partners, translating organizational data architecture into implementation requirements and holding vendors accountable to data standards and governance commitments.
  • Monitor the evolving AI regulatory and policy landscape and translate emerging requirements into organizational practice.
  • Serve as a core technical leader within MAHEC's Data & Analytics Governance Committee, translating governance policy into architectural and operational practice.
  • Lead the technical dimension of data stewardship by implementing governance decisions about data ownership, access classification, and retention in the architecture.
  • Partner with clinical, operational, and research leadership to mature the governance framework into a durable institutional capability with clear accountability structures.
  • Develop AI governance standards for input data documentation, model versioning, output auditing, and decommissioning protocols to keep AI tools accountable throughout their lifecycle.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in healthcare, public health, federally qualified health center, or social sector data environments; familiarity with HL7/FHIR, electronic health record data structures, or clinical quality measure data is a meaningful differentiator.
  • Experience managing external data partnerships and integrations, such as ADT/HIE feeds, state and federal data exchanges, and population health data aggregators.
  • Exposure to federal reporting environments such as UDS, eCQMs, and HEDIS, where data precision has regulatory and reputational consequences.
  • Working knowledge of metadata management, data cataloging tools, or master data management practices.
  • A master's degree in computer science, data science, information systems, health informatics, or a closely related field.

Givens Communities to support Impact Tours in partnership with MAHEC. By Geoffrey Cantrell September 22, 2026. Givens Communities is proud to sponsor and partner with MAHEC to advance the health and well-being of people across Western North Carolina. MAHEC - Mountain Area Health Education Center - is an Asheville based non-profit dedicated to improving training and retention of healthcare professionals, excellence in clinical care, health professions education, and innovative practices in the state's 16 westernmost counties. Together, the two service organizations share three key priorities: promoting lifelong health and wellness, expanding access for underserved populations, and building strong community partnerships. As part of this partnership, Givens Communities will support MAHEC's Impact Tours, a free quarterly series of lunch and learn events that offer a closer look at MAHEC's work across WNC, from expanding access to care, as well as strengthening the healthcare workforce through education and training. During a tour, participants get an overview of MAHEC's programs, learn how MAHEC is adapting its services to meet growing community needs, hear from MAHEC Ambassadors about the impact of their work, and discover ways to get involved in supporting healthier communities.
