Requirements
  • For the Chief Liability Trial Attorney level, a Juris Doctor and 10 or more years of experience in litigation are required.
  • For the Senior Liability Trial Attorney level, a Juris Doctor and 7 or more years of experience in litigation are required.
  • Membership in good standing of the California Bar is required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe is required.
  • Experience with Lexis or Westlaw is required.
  • Knowledge of the insurance industry, claims, and the insurance defense litigation legal environment is required.
  • Knowledge of law and procedure is required.
  • The Senior Liability Trial Attorney must have strong computer skills and be able to handle remote team-based work using video conferencing, task assignments, and other computer-based systems.
Responsibilities
  • Represent the Company's insureds in all phases of litigation for matters of the highest technical complexity, with minimal direction, and practice law to protect Zurich insureds' interests.
  • Apply advanced litigation expertise to complex liability matters, including case evaluation, strategy, trial preparation, and presentation.
  • Conduct legal analysis and research, prepare pleadings and other legal documents, manage discovery, and appear in judicial, administrative, arbitration, mediation, and trial proceedings.
  • Develop and execute case strategy in collaboration with claims partners, escalate significant issues in a timely manner, and use alternative dispute resolution when appropriate.
  • Maintain timely and accurate case file documentation in compliance with best practices, legal requirements, and confidentiality standards.
  • Deliver responsive client service through proactive communication, timely responses to inquiries, and adherence to customer protocols.
  • Serve as a technical resource by mentoring attorneys, sharing litigation strategies and best practices, and supporting effective use of tools and resources.
  • Identify opportunities to improve tools, resources, workflows, and operational efficiency.
  • Work independently without substantial supervision and mentor less experienced attorneys while providing leadership and training across the organization.
Desired Qualifications
  • Be ready and able to take cases forward to trial, including serving as first-chair trial counsel in appropriate matters; have recent, credible jury trial experience, comfort before judges and juries, and use trial readiness to drive favorable outcomes while serving as an office trial and technical resource.
  • Proactively identify trial opportunities, discuss strategy with leadership and claims partners, and demonstrate initiative and leadership expected of a chief-level trial position.
  • Have a strong record of recent jury trial experience and successful trial outcomes, preferably in insurance defense, general liability, or other complex liability matters.
  • Provide guidance on legal strategy, mentor other attorneys, and share litigation strategy and best practices.
  • Have effective communication skills and information technology skills.
  • Have strong negotiation skills.
  • Have experience working in a team-based environment and strong collaboration skills.
  • Have effective problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Have experience handling insurance industry claims and general commercial litigation, including wrongful death, commercial motor vehicle torts, products and premises liability, and personal injury, from inception through trial.
  • Be well organized, have analytical skills and strong oral and written communication skills, take a proactive approach to file handling and caseloads, and work independently and within a team.
  • Have relevant first-chair jury trial experience.
  • Be able to budget costs and calculate exposure for clients.
  • Have efficient work habits and knowledge of billables and diary review, with substantive and procedural legal knowledge.
  • Understand the staff counsel function and its role in the overall business.
  • Have functional and extensive knowledge of law and procedure.
  • Have prior experience in an insurance defense environment.
  • Have strong negotiation skills, effective problem-solving skills, and experience working in a team-based environment with strong collaboration skills.

Zurich launches LifeVault platform. Organising wills and documents. Provider, Zurich, has launched a digital platform, LifeVault, for customers to organise wills, important documents, personal wishes and memories in one place. Zurich said the platform is designed to extend support beyond the traditional life insurance pay out. According to the provider's survey of 2,000 UK adults, managing probate or estate administration falls to 42% of people facing the death of a loved one. The provider found that 60% of people responsible for probate found it difficult, which increased to 83% of millennials. While 79% of adults had worries about how their loved ones will cope after they pass, Zurich said 48% of the adult population (48%) have a valid will.
